lyssie: (can't talk now zombies)
Still working what feels like five peoples' jobs. October was just. I don't even know how to describe it, but I never felt like I had a moment to come up for air at all, and I didn't manage to do anything for Sparktober outside of that first week or so (which was mostly occasional comments in discord, and a watchalong).

Mom and I have two more Leverage Redemption episodes to go, and then we'll be through the season. Definitely enjoying the revival.

Not entirely through my fall down the Narnia rabbit hole (I've still got some of fanfiction.net to get through), but I've found that I am done with Susan Pevensie fic that list any of the following as a tag or description:
forgiveness
redemption
the problem of
solves the problem of
fixes the problem of
earns her way back into Narnia
remembers
etc.

basically. No. No, I do not give a fuck about the problem of Susan. I'm just fine with her being competent and practical, and do not need her to earn her ~rightful place and ~apologize for living in the real world.

It's not my fault I read National Service (well, the one with Susan, first) before I'd ever read any other Narnia fic and imprinted on the Susan in it.

Also, Susan/Caspian just doesn't work for me unless you're crossing the movie Susan with Samuel West's BBC Caspian. And then it's hot, and I'm all right with it (I just. Ben Barnes is not that interesting looking, ok. And West has this ridiculous hair.)

I'm sure I'll have more thoughts at another time.

On another hand, I watched Peppermint (yes, the Jennifer Garner gets revenge movie) and enjoyed the competence porn all over the place. Then I re-watched Ava. I also watched Mr. Right which is very entertaining (and if you liked Grosse Point Blank, you should watch it.) I basically then wanted a crossover of Mr. Right and Peppermint and Ava, with the latter two being like "...the fuck?" and the MR two being like ":):):):) Don't mind us, you're doing good things, sorry about the assassins on our tails. BYE."

I cannot fucking wait for The 355, btw. That will be a 90-minute smorgasboard of "yes, this, and more of this. Thanks." (I mean. Hopefully)

Not sure how long or spoilery this is. But yes! I've watched the first eight. Mom and I have been watching Leverage together every two weeks, so the season half got split. And now I've seen all eight, and I'm so so glad this show is back, even if the corporate/bad guy getting away with it stuff is still utterly depressing.

1. I finally got around to listening to the second series of Big Finish's ATA Girl. It was all right? But I'm a little bit over the constant framing of Women's Stories as All About Rape and Sexual Assault (seriously, can I please please please have some media about women that isn't centered on Women as Abuse Victims In a System That hates them, and the Family/Society that Keep Them Down. Please). In addition, the series had far too many male characters. Men already have a massive glut of stories about their time during WW2. Can we fucking stop talking about them. Please.

I'm also very over people talking enthusiastically about how they were able to show vulnerability in x female character, which is totally new and different and AWESOME. The interviews with ATA Girl, had every.single.woman state that as though it's a fucking selling point. NO IT ISN'T. Women are CONSTANTLY VULNERABLE in media, ffs.

2. Aside from that, my mother and I are re-watching Leverage together, and I had some thoughts (I know, a decade late) about Sophie and her acting and, just, character arc stuff from season one. Read more... )

3. Netflix is streaming Stargate: SG-1 again, so I've been randomly re-watching stuff. I hit up some s5 and 4, then went back to 3, and then to 1, and now I'm near the end of 2. I have skipped any episode I don't have interest in (which is... a lot). And Daniel's floppy hair is distracting (as are Janet's hair changes!) I've been enjoying it, though. And I'd forgotten how FROWNY FACE Teal'c is for most of season 1, and some of 2. I wonder if they asked him to soften for the later seasons, or if he just softened on his own.

(this got longer than I'd thought)

So, in the Leverage DVDs, it included an ad for the new season. With Leverage-themed tarot cards. (I'd personally like a regular deck with kings, queens and suits, but one of tarot would be amusing, too)

Sadly, my scanner did not make it bigger and glossy.

That latter has been happening a lot.

1. The temporary crown came off my tooth two night ago. Because I was sucking on a piece of chocolate. Not chewing hard shit, I was warned about. But not sucking on candy? Nope. Anyway, it's back on with adhesive now, but my poor gums are like *FLAIL, YOU SUCK* at me.

2. Migraine on Sunday meant no Leverage until Monday (I passed out and slept ten hours straight). YAY LEVERAGE IS BACK OMG MY TEAM IS SO AWESOME. I'm sure I had other thoughts, but, erm, I don't really think I can do them justice at the moment.

3. Primeval season/series finale: sigh. I enjoyed parts of it. Now if the writers could stop building all their episodes around That One Special White Dude, it might be better. I think they're actually just bad at ensembles, or something. (when characters are randomly knocked out/locked up for no reason, YOU ARE BARD at juggling an ensemble)

4. Work is work, but we've got overtime, so yay for that.

5. Summerfest has started. Getting home from work is going to suuuuuck for two weeks.

6. Prompting for the Fourth of July Femslash Porn Battle is underway. Also, if you've been going "I'd love to do more to raise femslash awareness, but I just don't know how...." fslashtoday is looking for archivists for the next two months. It's not a difficult job, really. If I can do it with a wonky 'c' key, anyone can.

7. I have finished off Rumpole of the Bailey at work. I think I'm going to side-track and run through all the Eight and Charley audios (the early stuff through Zagreus [which is still the BEST THING EVER for my crack-addled self]) tomorrow and Friday, and get a start on ripping Sherlock Holmes off as mp3s.

8. I need to watch the new episodes of Covert Affairs and Chloe King before I comment upon them, I think (mostly, though, I already want to kill Alek on Nine Lives, and I'm sure the show won't do it for me)

9. Haven returns soon, hurrah. Hopefully, it won't be all about Duke and Nathan. *fingers crossed*
lyssie: (Parker Sophie let's jump)
er, is this spoilery? idk. Cutting, anyway.

1. I dreamed in Nikita this morning. I have no idea why, I've been gorging on Leverage commentaries and Midsomer Murders and Big Finish Audios.

2. But it did remind me that I'd watched two and a third episodes of La Femme Nikita. Unfortunately, those must be the worst episodes or something, because they're uncompelling, bland and full of "Michael threatens to rape and murder Nikita, and she has no way to escape." And the third episode is "Michael is full of pain, and we should all feel sorry for him." So I stopped watching out of disgust.

3. Nikita herself is written as this male fantasy mixture of insouciant little girl and stone-cold killer. I feel heartily sorry for Peta Wilson, as she's never really given much to do outside of pout, get naked and shoot things. Oh, and sometimes, she gets to be Innocent, and then find out that even her closest friends are just evil and/or dead.

Sigh.

So, yeah. My opinion of the "La Femme Nikita is so brilliant" line that people use to talk about how bad Nikita (the CW series) is... well, let's just say I find it unconvincing. (I found LFN so uninteresting I watched it sometime in, like, December, and then totally forgot)

5. Speaking of ridiculous things, you know the Leverage commentaries are going to be good when John Rogers says things like "Can we not talk about felonies on the commentaries, please?" and there is lots of alcohol being drunk. They make me giggle. A lot.

Or at least buy an extra set of Leverage dvds.

If the writers would put Nate into period army uniform. Something like the following. HAT AND COAT REQUIRED. (more Kari Matchett wouldn't go amiss, either)

I think I need to re-watch it before I know what I think?

Meanwhile, here is that song towards the end (ripped from youtube, so, not the best version) Johnny Hollow's 'Nova Heart' - http://www.megaupload.com/?d=RH4D56NL

2. REAL LIFE.

I couldn't get into the car this morning, I also bent my key something ridiculous. Did manage to get in with applications of a hot water bottle. So, I wasn't too late.

I also bent one of my nails back halfway down the length, and you can see where the fold was as my nail polish has a crack all the way across. Typing wasn't so fun (and isn't).

(and yes, it wasn't that cold, but it was still very dnw.)

3. LEVERAGE OMG. <3 I am not coherent about that at all. But it was awesome (if you consider this a spoiler, might I remind you that EVERYTHING LEVERAGE DOES EVER is awesome to me? Yes, even the 'bland' episodes). I also might have spent yesterday watching every Tara Cole episode. <3

4. dear CK, please cease stomping my heart into the floor (even if I wanted to loathe Daniel Sparks to hell and back, I still managed to get over it by the end, and, and, Mrs. McVinnie. *sniffles*). I can only hold out hope that some stupid publisher will manage to reprint some of her older stuff Reforming Lord Ragsdale, why did I not steal you from the library lo those many years ago?.

....I lost my train of thought back there. Mostly, it's Christmas season, so I've been re-reading Carla Kelly's body of work in order to crush my soul. (even if there's happy endings). I think the one about the Oxford Career is up next (I've got short story anthologies, too. *suddenly more cheerful*)
lyssie: (Meggan is awesome)
1. I watched Appleseed last night, out of boredom (I tried watching some Farscape and gave up ten seconds in, I was apparently not in the mood). Netflix has it streaming, which was nice (they rec'd it based on Ghost in the Shell and BSG. *amused*). I liked it, even if I think it needed to be a little longer for all of the character bits. Unsurprisingly, I want femslash. (the only bit I disliked was how the lead female kept getting dragged around by her mecha boyfriend, bleh--it wasn't the "John and Aeryn defend each other equally" type of thing, it was more "poor, defenseless girl needs to be saved by the big man" a la Syfy's Alice)

2. Tonight, I watched Mary and Max, which is claymation and utterly charming if more than a bit creepy at times. Netflix said I'd like it based on my liking of Pan's Labyrinth, if that helps. =D

3. It feels weird that the porn battle is done. The BSG one and the multi-fandom one happened one after the other so fast, my brain is sort of whirling about.

4. Work is work.

5. It goes without saying that Haven and Leverage were awesome. (I'm expecting Haven to get canceled, given that's what happened to the last genre-ey thing with a female lead that I enjoyed; though, really, Haven will be saved by its lack of women, I'm sure)

6. Speaking of the porn battle, ykisnmk and all? But some of what I skimmed past just... Dude, no is so totally my reaction to it (Weir getting off on being humiliated, for one; using 'her cream' anywhere is just... so not sexy, guys. Really. Also? It's Inara. Not Inarra.)

ok, so that last peeve made me want to throttle people for misspelling
