lyssie: (Lucy is amused and annoyed at once)
I don't know that I've ever done a Friday Five before. But this one caught my eye.

1. What book frightened you as a young person?
There was one book, I think I was a teenager when I read it, but it stuck with me and I had trouble forgetting it. Nightmare Lake by Carl Laymon - it was part of that Twilight imprint, and about vampires and destiny and creeping things in the night. But probably not as epically as I'm remembering.

Amazon apparently has the book, but even nostalgia isn't enough for me to spend 20 dollars on a used book.

2. If you had to become a ‘living book (i.e. able to recite the contents of a book cover to cover upon request – reference Fahrenheit 451), what book would it be?
Oh, I know this one. I already do it a bit. Freedom and Necessity by Emma Bull & Steven Brust.

One day, I will find my dream cast for that book. I already know Lydia Leonard is my Susan.

3. What movie or TV show scared you as a kid?
This is utterly cliche, but, Doctor Who's Snakedance scared the shit of out me as a wee child of seven. My brother and I hid behind the sofa.

Nowadays, of course, the fake giant snake is laughable.

4. What movie (scary or otherwise) will you never ever watch?
Um. Quite a lot. Most of the horror genre. Also, romantic comedies, heartfelt emotional dramas, chick flicks, war dramas... I'm not a huge fan of a lot of things.

If I have to pick a specific movie, I don't think I'll ever be interested in seeing the new Blade Runner flick. (it looks so dull, you guys. Like, not even visually interesting. Just flat and dull and the same story that a billion novels and movies/shows have done. Even BSG did it better.)

5. Do you have any phobias?
I'm not a fan of the dark. And I have a very over-active imagination at times (and let's just say that if the Doctor Who episode Listen had aired when I was a child, I'd probably have that phobia...)
lyssie: (Scully isn't confused)
1. [livejournal.com profile] dw_guestfest is open for prompts and sign-ups! Go prompt for those obscure Doctor Who characters.

2. In researching to see if I'd posted about Challenger, I came across things I have no memory of writing (like Jo Harvelle/Dean Winchester porn. idek, but I still blame [livejournal.com profile] aj), and this big-ass unfinished BSG thing that I have no idea where or what or how I was going with it. Pity.

3. Work continues to be work. Yesterday, someone told me that I now have more responsibilities (there has been...shifting in IT, apparently). Oh joy. Otoh, job security. On the other, I don't have enough time to do everything I'm responsible for now. (and let's not get into the intercompany clusterfuck that is fucking transportation's fault, those incompetent assholes)

4. However, the one upside to work yesterday was that, in a fit of insanity Thursday night I put the entire folder of random tv-movie-related sound files on my computer. So I spent an hour and a half yesterday morning hearing quotes from everything from Buffy to Touching Evil (UK--and can I talk about how disconcerting it is to hear Ruth Evershed say "If there's going to be any hitting going on, I'll be the one doing it."? Because Susan Taylor was hardcore, but Ruth is... not so much. At least, not in that fashion) to - and this was the BEST BIT EVER - the recordings I'd made of sped-up versions of BSG quotes. "No more Mr. Nice Gaius!" is the MOST HILARIOUS THING when he's a chipmunk, you guys. I was practically on the floor, there. And Monty Python. And some Who. And some Stargate. And Farscape (John Crichton, I missss youuuu)

5. [livejournal.com profile] halfamoon is up again this year.

6. Have the latest (and the one before? idek) AO3 stats meme, which I was bored and did the ff'net stats, too. At least I know my password there again.

Fic/shipping meme

1. Write down the names of 20 characters.*
2. Allow other people to leave prompts!
3. Write a fic of fifteen words or less for every prompt, using the characters determined by the numbers. Do NOT read the prompts before you do step 1.

(E.G. 1 + 10 - at the Beach, or 5 + 6 - happy endings)

*The original is 10. And like LS, I like many fandoms and people

It should come as no surprise that limiting myself to 20 was difficult.

(this reminds me a bit of making fortune-tellers crammed with names and one-word plot devices)

Flist, I totally broke down and bought paid LJ time tonight for more icons. I figure it's been, like, four years since I last did so, so it totally doesn't count as weak.

Anyway, have a meme (nicked from [livejournal.com profile] helsinkibaby)

I actually did this about an hour after I saw it on my flist, courtesy [livejournal.com profile] lost_spook and then promptly forgot I'd written anything at all.

1: Pick five fandoms. List them in alphabetical order.

1. Elementary
2. Leverage
3. Motive
4. Person of Interest
5. Spooks

2: Visit this site to find your first RANDOM POEM OF POWER. Write down the 5th line (yes, even if it's an E.E. Cummings poem and you wind up with an apostrophe). Repeat five times and - you guessed it - list 'em in alphabetical order! (No cheating, mind! This is a challenge and it's always been about creativity.)

3: I think you can see where this is going. Write a very quick 50-word half-drabble for each fandom (try to do it all in one sitting - make your brain explode!), using the line from the poem as a prompt. You don't have to include it in the half-drabble - it's just inspiration.

4: Bravo! Have a cookie.
excuse me, I can't drabble to save my life, apparently. I hope this bodes well for other things )
lyssie: (Jo Grant: Dalek killer)
(it is totally a verb. Especially when one is wearing a swishy black coat. *SWISH* *TORCHWOODS*)

ahem.

0. ETA: Femslash Porn Battle (accepting prompts still)

1. Have I mentioned that [livejournal.com profile] twelvecolonies is back? And [livejournal.com profile] womenverse, obvsly.

2. Hey, [livejournal.com profile] karma_aster we got more feedback on the fic we co-wrote (I'm sort of wondering if we're on some rec list somewhere? Or someone is going through old Sam/Jack fic =D)

3. I have gotten more and more tired of our Procurement department's lack of intelligence. AT LEAST once a day, I look over my cubicle wall at H and go "WHY am I doing Procurement's job for them?" They can't even keep vendors straight, ffs. (like that time they added a new remit address to a vendor in the old system and changed the ACH info--without checking to make sure the vendor was the same vendor, holy god, I can't with their stupidity. NGL. We've been paying one vendor for two vendors for sixteen months and they couldn't be bothered to help untangle it.

4. I really should have a big ranty/annoyed post about work at some point.

5. omg, though. So, two weeks ago, H brought in cheese as they had a surplus. And A was like, "the logo mascot is a sheep." (guys, Borden has a cow). A is never ever living this down. He now has a fuchsia pink sheep staring at him and C has a cow that moos when you poke it.

6. I work with ridiculous people. pls ignore the fact that I bought the cow to taunt A, ok.

7. For some reason, I did a random re-cast of Blake's 7 for an 'updated' version. I seem to recall being very drunk at the time and trying to race-swap everyone or something. Except I didn't.
Roj Blake - Chiwetel Ejiofor (because he is pretty. Srsly. Have you seen this man?)
Vila Restal - Lenora Crichlow (because I can't leave without one gender-swap, and she would be excellent)
Jenna Stannis - Laila Rouass (It took me too long to realize this, AND YES. Excellent)
Kerr Avon - Idris Elba (because I kept going "no, no, he should be Vila. Really. REALLY. Oh, god, no, you're right brain. He's Avon")
Olag Gan - Miranda Hart (I tried. I tried, but UK dudes are either short and dull, or tall and weedy. AND YOU KNOW SHE WOULD BE PERFECT.)
Cally of Auron - Anna Maxwell Martin (amusingly, she was the one I first cast, and I don't even know if I can explain why now)
Zen/Orac - Pippa Heywood (I blame Green Wing; she can do sarcastic and unamused amazingly well)
Servalan - Racheal Stirling (I am pretty sure this casting is everything I've ever wanted)
Travis - Paul McGann (I know, I know, he seems too old. AND YET. Hot and cranky and full of rage he could be. Also, I bet he'd look great in black leather)
Anna Grant - Orla Brady (I can't help that I first met her as Countess Rossakoff in the Poirot adaption Labours of Hercules. I just. I feel like she would fit so well, even if she is older than Anna was implied to be)
Dayna Mellenby - Lyndie Greenwood (I know this is typecasting. NOT SORRY)
Del Tarrant - Elliot Knight (he was adorable and entertaining as Sinbad, and I think he and Idris would have a great give-and-take of the Avon vs Tarrant relationship--even if he is a bit young)
Soolin - Kristen Stewart (I know, I know. No one likes her, and she "sucks" as an actress. But I think she'd be amazing as the gunslinger who was trained by the people who murdered her parents, whom she then killed. unf. Also, Dayna/Soolin. Hot or hottest?)

Random guest stars:
Avalon - Michelle Ryan
Berkol - Tom Hiddleston
Rontane - Ben Miller
Ensor - Pippa Heywood (because why not--if I could get her out of retirment, I would totally cast Geraldine McEwan)

8. Speaking of, have a Cally ficlet (mostly for posterity, I think I wrote it for Wverse) Very rough, iirc. PG.
There were three Federation guards, two informants, and at least one other member of the resistance in the bar making an already precarious situation more difficult. Cally of Auron didn't duck her head or hunch her shoulders. There was no point in hiding from the inevitable. Besides, attracting attention to herself wouldn't do any good, and her own contact was already gone.

It had been stupid to stay after the meeting, nursing the ale she'd bought as part of her cover. But there'd been something relaxing about pretending for a moment that there was no one and nothing chasing her.

The crackle of a radio caught her ear and she glanced sideways to see one of the troopers leaning over the bar, talking to the bartender.

Reaching down, she clicked open the comm-link on her bracelet and shoved the channel into the Federation bands.

Interference blasted out of the guards' radios as she'd predicted it would. Federation technology was still too easily tampered with on even the most basic level. Then again, they weren't expecting true resistance, here in the heart of the empire.

Perhaps she should cut them some slack.

Several of the bar's patrons took exception to the noise. Cally slipped off her bar stool and away from the trooper who was almost too close for comfort.

Then she looked across the room and smiled. Her target was slipping out the back. She'd better follow him, before he decided that informing on smugglers and rebels was a lucrative career.

Last time, she'd left the man alive. This time, he might not be so lucky.

9. Torchwood Gwen/Rhys, the longer version of what I cut down to post at the Wverse challenge (fluff)

"What's all this, then?" When she'd unlocked the door and stepped into their flat, Gwen Cooper had expected Rhys to be long gone to bed. It was half-three in the morning and all she wanted was a hot shower followed by a blessed eight hours' sleep. Preferably with her boyfriend half-wrapped round her for comfort.

Rhys looked almost guilty from his position on the couch, food on the low table in front of him and something that looked vageuly like a doily draped on the cushion. "I just thought, y'know, you might be hungry."

"I might be hungry?" She raised her eyebrows. "Well, yes, after a long weevil hunt, I suppose I am."

"Right, then. Think of this as a present. A friendly thank-you," he suggested, patting the cushion next to him and waggling his eyebrows a little.

Gwen bit the inside of her lip to keep from laughing at his attempt at a leer. "Ah, it's very sweet, darling, but I think I'll just have a shower and a cuppa in bed."

"But I've just changed the sheets," he objected, jumping up from the couch and getting in her way before she could reach the bedroom. "I'd rather you eat out here."

"Shower first, Rhys," she said firmly.

He fidgeted, then lowered his voice, "Gwen, you won't be, um, well... he had nowhere else to go."

It finally occurred to her that Rhys was acting more odd than usual. She frowned. "Who, Rhys?"

"Banana." Rhys looked like he was trying not to wince, as though expecting an explosion from her. "I sort of had to put him to bed."

"In our bed?"

He nodded.

Gwen reached out and clutched the wall for a moment, torn between laughter, sympathy, and annoyance. She was exhausted, filthy, and ready to kill something. And here was Rhys, giving her bed away. "You're sleepin' on the couch."

"Well, yeah."

"With me." She held up a hand, "But after I shower. I stink, and I don't want to smell me all night."

"I wouldn't mind," he offered.

She leaned in and kissed him with a smack. "I know you wouldn't. Now go pull out the extra duvets and make up our lumpy bed."

10. Person of Interest, Root ficlet. Spoilery for mid-season. Lights go on.

Lights go off.

Off. On. Long. Short. Root tilts her head to the side and counts heartbeats per minute, timing them to the flickering lights of the library. One and two and three and four and--

Ah. There. A smile plays on her lips--it would be an ecstatic grin on a small child. On an adult, it's almost a grimace, but the fervor echoing in Root's eyes is frightening.

If Harold had ever suspected how easy it would be for Her to communicate, he would have locked her in a deep pit.

Lights on.

"Message received."

Comment and I'll give you a letter; then you list 10 things you love that begin with that letter.
[livejournal.com profile] million_moments Gave me 'D'.

1. Domino! Seriously, man. How can she not be on my list of things I love beginning with 'd'? That would be like not having chocolate ever again. I love that she's no-nonsense and broken. I love that she and Aeryn Sun could talk about the Mom Issues. I love that she's so fucking kick-ass.

2. David Bowie. I... I can't describe how much I love this man. Currently, 'Cactus' is my favorite song.

3. David Kemper. You are an evil evil man. You say, with a smile, things like, "And that's when it all went to hell for them!" (paraphrased). You put your characters through hell and then let them come out the other side better people and even happy. You should be writing BSG. Or maybe you and Fabian could collaborate on a Cable and Deadpool movie. With the assistance of Ben Browder and Chris Judge.

4. Depeche Mode. I love you guys. Sometimes, I don't want to listen to you, and then something like 'precious' will prod at my brain and I'm in love with you again. You were babies, once, which is kind of scary.

5. Dax, Jadzia. You were calm, collected and the voice of reason. I'll never forget your amusement at Julian in 'If Wishes Were Horses'. You also once macked on Kira's boyfriend. Go, you. ;)

6. Dee. You're the voice of reason, and you support the people you love. No matter what stupid shit they pull. MWAH.

7. David Creegan. You're one fucked-up man. And you were fucked up before the bullet in your brain, with your marriage falling apart and your dedication to being a copper. You lock away the people you care about, so they can't be hurt. You've lost so damned much, but you don't stop. Someday, they're going to lock you in a funny farm and only Susan will visit you.

8. Duran Duran. I could love you for 'Pop Trash' alone, but there's more to it than that. There's 'Electric Barbarella', too.

9. D'Argo. Oh, man. You made me cry, dude. You're courageous and full of love and angst. And, yeah, sometimes, you don't get what the people around you are feeling. And you get pissed off like HELL. And mad. But you're a noble guy and you have such ANGST.

10. Deadpool. Oh, Wade. YOUR BRAIN IS SO SPECIAL. And you never shut up. Plus, you once cut Wolverine up a lot. Please don't change.

11. Dayna Mellenby. (shut up, she deserves to be on this list). She builds her own guns! And she fights with bows, knives, and swords. Plus, she's bitchy and feisty and wants to kill Servalan.
lyssie: (Jack Rocket)
Make a list of all the characters in your icons. (Although you may have more than one icon of a single character, they only go on the list once.) Alphabetize it. Take the first two people on the list; that's your first pairing. Second two people; second pairing. etc.

1. I am the Pumpkin King! For I can now tape House and NCIS both. This doesn't mean we'll watch House soon (we still have two episodes from LAST SEASON to watch), but it does mean it'll get taped and viewed eventually.

2. Pls can I have a Ziva of my very own? And a Jen.

3. MEME time. Er. Take show/whatever, answer questionsy thingie. They are basic, somewhat boring questions, but I was bored.

Give me a "five things" fanfic request and I'll write something for it. For example, "five movies Teal'c can't live without" or "five reasons why Bob loves Dot" etc.

(yes I totally stole the text from her, too)

Er. So. Yes. Fandoms: Red Dwarf, Doctor Who, Blake's 7, Farscape, Stargates, Star Wars (episodes 4-6), newBattlestar Galactica, Babylon 5, Star Trek (all but Enterprise), X-Men (comics and movieverse--and I'm talking Extended X-Family, here. Excalibur and X-Force and X-Factor, OH MY), Painkiller Jane/22 Brides (but it's been a while and will require re-reading), Route 666, Ruse, Sojourn, X-Files, LotR, Buffy, Angel, Bones, NCIS, Law & Order: Criminal Intent (and possibly Munch and Benson), Touching Evil (UK), Pirates of the Carribean, House, Reboot, Firefly, Red Cap, and you can try prodding me with others.
lyssie: (Kara cartoon)
Guess the songs, yo.

First lines (except where stated) more or less at random (although Winamp LOVED one particular band, they only appear here ONCE) minus the really obscure ones (I don't think anyone would guess the opening to When Animals Attack by Institute, f'r instance).

1. I open up my head inside and find another person's mind. - 30 Seconds to Mars 'The Mission' - [livejournal.com profile] cherryice
2. (ignoring the hyperbole at the beginning) Please let me introduce you to a brand new idea.
3. The news had come out in the first World War. - Ray Stevens 'Snoopy and the Red Baron' - [livejournal.com profile] astrogirl2
4. And I didn't want to know, I just didn't want to know.
5. In the soil of our sadness - Siousxie and the Banshees 'Rhapsody' - [livejournal.com profile] spockette
6. You took my hand, you showed me how - Pink 'Who Knew?' - [livejournal.com profile] walkingdaydream
7. He loves her but he sometimes thinks she's crazy - Pet Shop Boys 'Somebody Else's Business' - [livejournal.com profile] rieloflorien
8. What I have is nothing to my need
9. (second line) It must have been something you said - Cutting Crew 'I Just Died in Your Arms' - [livejournal.com profile] shadowserenity
10. You say you fell while holding diamonds - Anna Nalick 'In the Rough' - [livejournal.com profile] shadowserenity

C-- points and a scene an attempted 100 words* to anyone who stumps me.

You remember when you were in junior high, and you folded a square of paper into a fortune teller? You'd have numbers one one side, colors on another, and predictions underneath the flaps?

I was bored the other day at work, and now I have one with Galactica crew and fic-prompts on it. And since I did it randomly, the flaps/names correspond interestingly. Either in the pairs, or the person and the prompt.

Helo, D'anna, humor
Gaeta, Baltar, poetry
Tyrol, Doral, angst
Roslin, Cottle, hatred
Kara, Six, gossip
Cally, Sharon, future
Lee, Leoben, kissing
Adama, Simon, pre-series

Two finished minifics:

Prompt: Simon, Kara, poetry )
---------------------------------

Prompt: Roslin, Six, kissing )

I've got a few other prompts, but nothing concrete yet.

I also ended up making a multi-fandom all-women prompter today. This one wasn't quite as randomly appropos.

Cally (B7), Dayna, death
Aeryn, Sam, water
Jenna, Soolin, crystal
Jo McDonagh, Liz Weir, apples
Chiana, Ms. Parker, crack
Kara, Teyla, closet
Sharon, Zhaan, angst
Sam, Kara, snow (hahahah. Yes, they're on the list twice. Bah. my otp!)

hrm. Bed soon, I think.
