note to self

stop looking at ff'net. The extremely shitty fics with 200+ reviews only depress you.

kthnx.

ps. Go look at Kara caps.

I have yet to figure out the magic words that garner huge reviews, even here, but I think one key to multi reviews over there is to say "And pls coment! If I dont get reviews I wont finish ths"

Actually, I've tried that. Have a dummy account that does pretty cliche fic, with "pls review!" tacked on...

Doesn't help. None of the fic there's been reviewed.

[identity profile] fallenbelle.livejournal.com 2005-05-14 05:54 pm (UTC)(link)
I don't suppose you'll share the dummy account with us, will you? I want to make a comparison of your work and the dummy work.

Also, is English your native language? Do you spell things correctly and use proper grammar? If yes, then this may be your problem. Seriously, that, and you may need to use l33t sp33k in your fics, that could help too.

*is half serious*

[identity profile] rosewildeirish.livejournal.com 2005-05-14 05:59 pm (UTC)(link)
Or at lest loose the hoity-toity proper speling. (sic) *g*

[identity profile] fallenbelle.livejournal.com 2005-05-14 06:06 pm (UTC)(link)
OMG, yes! Wut iz wid spling thigz oll korrect and sheet. Yu shud be hapy that I lit yu reed mi fic, yu conceetit beetches.

*is tired from the effort required to butcher the English language*

Sure... I haven't used it in a while, anyway. sigh.

[identity profile] livilla.livejournal.com 2005-05-15 06:37 am (UTC)(link)
Ok, see, I think your problem is, you let the canon characterisations creep in every now and then. Don't you know it's fanfiction and you don't have to put any effort into making the characters resemble their real selves??? Duh!

:P People are so silly, really. *fangirls you*

[identity profile] nakedtoes.livejournal.com 2005-05-15 08:47 am (UTC)(link)
Sweetie, you're supposed to write 'plz read&rvw' or something similarly ghastly. If you spell it right, people will know something's up.

*grins at the silliness* Plus there are no passionate declarations of love either - that always helps.

[identity profile] rosewildeirish.livejournal.com 2005-05-14 05:58 pm (UTC)(link)
Huh. OK, new theory is fics with proper spelling and words of more than 2 syllables scare off the rabid reviewers.

[identity profile] jacksrubberduck.livejournal.com 2005-05-14 05:45 pm (UTC)(link)
I think there is probably some bizarre rule over there that declares that the crappier a fic is the more reviews it shall get.

And the good stuff is ignored.

Because of course we should all encourage the truly dreadful tripe.

[identity profile] lyssie.livejournal.com 2005-05-14 05:51 pm (UTC)(link)
No. There's good stuff with 200+ reviews.

[identity profile] jacksrubberduck.livejournal.com 2005-05-14 08:17 pm (UTC)(link)
Hmmm.

I would do an in depth study but I'm currently hyper on additives (yet *again*) and so have a shorter attention span than a goldfish.

[identity profile] fallenbelle.livejournal.com 2005-05-14 05:57 pm (UTC)(link)
OMG! We must totally praise the effort of everyone who tries, and encourage them lots. The better writers don't need encouragement.

*or something like that*

[identity profile] jacksrubberduck.livejournal.com 2005-05-14 08:18 pm (UTC)(link)
Sounds like general fandom logic to me!

Wonder if that's why there are so many raving Daniel fan girls...?

::smirks::

[identity profile] nakedtoes.livejournal.com 2005-05-14 09:24 pm (UTC)(link)
I no longer get the same thrill from ff.net feedback that I used to. Too much of it is just "I lurve you if you get them together," and "You've destroyed my world" if you don't, plus the old favourite "Please write a sequel, please!" when you've stated that you've finished.

*is cranky, oh yes*

[identity profile] karma-aster.livejournal.com 2005-05-14 10:56 pm (UTC)(link)
Oh my god, I hate the people who ask for sequels! Dammit! People like that are the reason that Batman and Robin and the current crop of Star Wars movies exist!

Someday, I am gonna write a fic wherein there are massive explosions, everyone dies, there is no possibilty of resurrecting ANYONE or ANYTHING and someone is still gonna say, "OMG! You should write a sequel!"

And then I'm just gonna have to go get an Uzi and go on my tri-state killing spree. Because my last faith in humanity...gone.

[identity profile] nique.livejournal.com 2005-05-14 11:35 pm (UTC)(link)
...you know.

I did that.

And people asked for sequels.

And I'm half-asedly writing one.

----->No will power.

[identity profile] nakedtoes.livejournal.com 2005-05-15 06:03 am (UTC)(link)
*laughes* TBF, no one's ever asked me to write a prequel. Hrm.

Yes! Kill off the planet Earth: it'll be fun!

[identity profile] driftingatdusk.livejournal.com 2005-05-14 06:15 pm (UTC)(link)
I think the trick to getting lots of reviews on ff.net is to post a pretty average length fic (something around 2000+ words) in about three or four parts, more if you get the fic over 4000 words. Apparently that's the key to *ahem* success *ahem*. That and ending a part in the middle of the actual part, in the middle of a sentence/paragraph if possible, so reviews are compelled to tell you to write more.

I have a feeling that's why I've never managed to succeed on ff.net.

[identity profile] lyssie.livejournal.com 2005-05-14 08:51 pm (UTC)(link)
Heh. Yeah. I should try that, one of these days. Hrm.

[identity profile] ccgig.livejournal.com 2005-05-14 09:33 pm (UTC)(link)
Thats what I've noticed. If someone posts a long fic it's only at the top of the page for a day or so. If you split the fic up into lots of parts and post one part every day it picks up more reviews.
I hate it when writers say 'Review or I wont post any more' I don't review for them at all.

[identity profile] nakedtoes.livejournal.com 2005-05-14 09:21 pm (UTC)(link)
It can be worth checking out who's doing the reviewing - after a while you get a feel for who's critical and who will love anything as long as it has the magic words 'Sam and Jack in lurve' contained
ext_18106: (Default)

[identity profile] lyssie.livejournal.com 2005-05-14 10:12 pm (UTC)(link)
Sadly, most of them don't actually contain the real Jack O'Neill and Sam Carter. Most of them contain the Author As Sam, and Jack The Hunk.

[identity profile] nakedtoes.livejournal.com 2005-05-14 10:16 pm (UTC)(link)
Does every fandom contain as much dross as SG-1, or is it *special*?

I think part of the problem though is that there aren't enough canon-based pairings available - it sends people a little crazy.

[identity profile] lyssie.livejournal.com 2005-05-14 10:49 pm (UTC)(link)
Nah. 90% of all fic is crappy, generally. sigh.

[identity profile] amykay73.livejournal.com 2005-05-14 11:44 pm (UTC)(link)
I feel your pain. I too would love to know the magic formula that gets lots of reviews.

I know I don't review as often as I should, but I do love your work.
