Now I read her stuff and LOVE it, but this wank-fest just made me cringe and wish she'd kept her mouth shut...
still, deleting? That doesn't delete the wank, that just UPS it... cause you know somewhere someone has a screen dump of it - and it enters myth-space now.
hahaha. That wouldn't surprise me. I have a bunch of the original post and comments saved as a text file (I was going to read it at work and then forgot to).
Link to the thread with link to the record is here (http://www.journalfen.net/community/fandom_wank/1246633.html?thread=213924009#t213924009) if you want it.
"And furthermore, that signal is over a thousand feet high! The ENTIRE fannish navy is out looking for me. Do you honestly think there is ANYONE on the internet who could POSSIBLY miss it?"
I'm afraid I can't compare to the source material as I havent seen classic who but Jamie Fraser, the male hero/lead is named after that dude and the guy who played him. But the actor isn't a 6'3 redheaded Highlander so it doesn't count! Trufax.
Jamie Fraser is based shamelessly off of Jamie McCrimmon, played by Frazer Hines, who was an 18th-century Highlander. Who travelled in time with the Doctor. Only, you know, her version doesn't include a Time Lord or something, idek.
Why yes, I certainly can see the . . . "inspiration". Nah, Claire's no timelord. She's just from the future and tries to stop the Jacobites and the massacre at Culloden.
Sadly, the books are eating my brain so I will be going through all...6 I think.
Unfortunately it already managed to get out into the wider internet waters as other authors picked it up. George R.R. Martin on Not A Blog (http://grrm.livejournal.com/) wrote about why he is against it and discussion there got pretty steamy too. I don't think any side will change their mind. And the wank will continue until everyone gets tired and goes back to their trenches.
That's because 'heated' and 'steamy' means something else in the of Martin's corner of fandom then in the Gabaldon's. I suppose that after reading the latter the former is almost boring. What's with using actual arguments and being respectful of other people's opinions.
Still it's reaching people who would never read/ where not aware of existence of Diane Gabaldon before so maybe removing the actual posts and surfing just on the new wave of interest will be beneficial for her. Now I wonder if creating wanks is going to be new viral marketing tool?
But the thing is, the stuff at DG's was mostly polite, too! And some of it was very long-winded and boring!
About the only bits that weren't polite were the back-and-forthing with that Pamela twit, and the occasional "omg now I will never read your books!" comment.
But isn't it always like that - perfectly boring discussion with occasional bouts of insanity? The craziness of the thread is measured by the frequency of the parts with name calling, Hitler comparisons and such.
Laurell K Hamilton talked about it on her Facebook and John Scalzi talked about it in more detail on Whatever (http://whatever.scalzi.com/2010/05/05/author-pokes-fanfic-hive-film-at-11/), his blog.
I personally like Scalzi's and Stross's stance best. I think that their rules are what all authors should live by. They know fanfiction is a sign that their work is moving people and that fighting internets is a waste of time and effort. They just want to make sure he won't suffer financially as they make their living from writing. No talk about raping children or something (seriously, if you did to your children what you do to your characters...)
Yet more evidence that she does not understand the internet or fandom. Who will explain the wonders of screencap to her? "Delete it and it will go away" is clearly the latest myth she is clinging to.
She really is the wank that keeps on giving, bless her.
Ha maybe she realized that one good review doesn't make her god's greatest gift to sceince-fiction? Although her blog is very unintentionally funny, since apparently no one ever gave her the memo that using big words uneccessarily just makes you sound like a pompous ass not the paragon of intelligence she is presenting herself as.

I suppose this means she deleted her "please don't fanfic me" post then too? Not that anyone's likely to be confused.

She really has no idea how much she resembles some of the infamous fan wankers. Damn. We need more popcorn.
