WHY do people want fic where Sam gets beaten up/abused by Pete, and then Jack goes and kicks his ass??

WHY?

First. If Pete were to raise a hand to her, he would find his ass SO DUMPED he'd be digging himself out of the landfill in Denver.

Second. Sam has been hanging around Teal'c, the marines, and JACK for how long? and they don't think she's picked up a little more fighting skill? (she kicked the Turghan's ass, people) If Pete succeeded in actually touching her? She would probably kick his ass herself.

Physical abuse is NOT something she'd tolerate. It might affect her job performance, for one thing. For another, she isn't going to stay with a guy who's abusing her! Her self-esteem ain't quite that low, thanks.

Another thing I keep seeing: Sam hides these abuse injuries from the SGC's doctors...

Mandatory post-mission physicals. There is NO EXCUSE that will get you out of one -- hello? Threat to the planet if you're a goa'uld?

And if she does get one? Those doctors are GOING TO NOTICE patterns of bruising, cracked ribs, and fingermarks on that pale, pale skin that bruises so easily...

Neither Brightman nor Janet is going to believe she got injured on the mission if she's the only one, and none of the guys remember it!

Makes note: Write a fic where Pete attempts to hit Sam and she kicks his ass, dumps it, then stalks off to kill Ba'al or something. *mutters* (ps. am leaving in five minutes for home)

I think I agree with you. I can see the Jonas-Hansen-smacked-her-around a lot easier, because she was young and really might not have known that if he was all "omg, I'm so sorry, I'm all broken inside from doing evilbadthings for my country and I will never do it again and LOVE YOU" that he really probably would continue to be abusive. But she's grown up a lot, and I think that physical abuse would be a big giant road flare of a red flag that she wouldn't be able to ignore.

Emotional abuse... THAT one I'll buy. She could get dragged through the manipulative wringer for an awfully long time, busily rationalizing it away, before she wises up. But that's something different. Also probably something more plausible in this Pete-relationship.

However, I'll bet the *why* people write this is similar to why so many people write rape!fic... it's something they need to play out in their heads with this strong, role-model-y female character in order to be less afraid of it themselves.

Or I'm giving people way too much credit, and they've just read too many trashy romance novels from the 80s.

I think she could start to believe it because of all the things she's done at the SGC and that frankly she is a little messed up. As are they all. Someone can easily manipulate that against her and there's a part deep down inside of her that probably believes she's one fucked up girl.

And Jonas Hansen I can see, merely because she was rather young and dare I say...innocent. That part of her character has dissolved therefore so has the part that would ever accept any physical abuse. She's grown and become harder and wiser.

I'm, um, slightly guilty of finding the Jack As Knight Of Some Color *incredibly* hot and romantic and all of that crap. However, there are just so many ways that he can rescue her that don't demean her as a character. I mean, they go into SPACE and fight ALIEN BAD GUYS on a weekly basis! I'm pretty sure we can find a way to Damsel-ize Sam with her still being Sam, and we probably wouldn't even have to try that hard.

Of course, if Sam is still Sam, she probably *isn't* going to tumble into his arms and Be Made All Better With Sex And Kisses And Impregnation With Twins, so... huh, yeah, maybe my idea isn't a perfect solution after all. ;)

Pft! I'd get myself stuck in a physically-abusive relationship before Sam would. And I'm the kinda gal who, the first time I got hit, would either be out the door or he'd be picking up every one of his damn teeth.

Although, yeah, I can also see emotional abuse/manipulation as a possibility. But otherwise? Sam is far too strong, smart, and brave to get caught in a relationship like that. That's among the major reasons that I adore her. Hell, it's likely why Jack loves her too!

She also, with a few brief lapses, doesn't think she *NEEDS* to be in a relationship. It's been this big huge stretch for her to get and be in a relationship at all, and if it gets substantially less convenient to maintain, like she is getting beat on, she can go back to being single. She's been alone and relatively content for a long time -- which I think would help her say "fuck off, evil abusive bastard" without being OMG SO AFEARED of being left alone.

Emotional manipulation is less obvious. While Sam totally KICKS ASS in a lot of ways, I suspect she's pretty insecure socially... so if someone she cares about tells her things that boil down to "this is wrong because YOU are not doing enough," I think that would be a sucker-punch right to her weak spot. I also don't think she's been in enough (if any) really GOOD, healthy relationships to have a clear picture that This Is Not The Way It Should Be.

Yeah. That is... pretty much Sam in a nutshell from what I've seen. She's not really that great with emotions, and Pete strikes me as the kind of guy who just might chip away at her to get her to do what he wants... I've been saying, since the guy was introduced and was all "Must find out secret job!" that he strikes me as the type who would, through emotional attachment, try to get her to give up a large part of her career--namely going through the gate--so she could be the happy suburban wife who just happens to do astrophysics work for the Air Force... and Sam's unwillingness to just flat out say "I cannot tell you what I do, it's classified" lends me to think that she's very, very unsure emotionally, and lacks the metaphorical balls to tell the guy she (theoretically) loves 'no' in that sort of situation.

Well, actually, the next fic spinning in my brain is what happens after Eighth and vibratorJack enter Atlantis and they're there to TALK, not to take over and there's lots of snark and they team up and kill some wraith and Eighth wants to sex McKay and Eighth mindprobes lizzie and gets bitchsmacked by the reminants of Teyla that is stuck in lizzie's brain and Eighth and mini!Sam really really like each other and thing each other is neat and angsty for similiar reasons (we were made to be sex toys. WTF??!?) and then John and Lizzie have insanely great sex, and the minis have insanely great sex, and the robots have insanely great sex and Jacob Carter remains dead. :shamed:

I don't hate Pete. I just think he's Not Right for Sam. I'm sure he's a generally very nice guy and he probably genuinely cares about Sam a lot. I think, maybe, he doesn't really understand a few things about Sam, but Sam doesn't seem to really understand a few things about herself either.

And I don't think you should go in and marry a guy when you're not completely sure that it's what you want. But that's just me. And I won't demonize Pete for not being Jack. He's not Jack, and he's not really the one that Sam loves. Hasn't he suffered enough? ^_^
