But she isn't, and he knows that. He's planned on it. Because Lieutenant Colonel Sam Carter is spending Christmas with her relatives. So it's safe to drive past her house.

Supposed to be gone, he amends, staring at the woman making a snowman on her lawn.

"Carter?"

She doesn't look surprised to see him, just amused. "I've even got carrots, sir."

"Bug-eyed monster, Carter?"

"Yeah."

For just a moment, he wonders if she was expecting this. Then the thought slithers away. Mainly because she threw a snowball at him.
