Random blah etc

1. Finally got round to listening to the Dark Eyes set done by Big Finish (the first one), and, uh... It's dull. Like. It has all the parts that I feel should be entertaining, and they just don't work (ffs, it has Lady Emily Marchant in it. And all she does is make me yawn. It has Eight being hurt/comfort and swishy. And yet.)

I wanted to like it, and I made it through all four episodes, but I didn't ever feel a connection with anything. And reading up on two and three is even less interesting.

2. In other (related) news: things I am really tired of: Daleks.

3. Deadpool fought X-Force and warped all of time and kidnapped Hitler and it was ridiculous.

4. Black Widow continues to keep her clothing on. (I am shocked by this every month, tbh. After all: our concept of female spies is Mata Hari and Natasha in heels and a tiny dress) It is sort of amazing. Unsurprisingly, no one likes the book (I, of course, am loving it).

5. On the other end of the spectrum, Painkiller Jane and the 22 Brides continue to shoot people in the face whilst wearing high heels and bikinis (I tried. I tried to give them up, guys. I just can't, because they speak to me--I mean, Jane is the equivalent of Wolverine when he's got his healing factor. She just keeps on coming, damn). Seth is dull, guys, can we move on from him (dude, you do NOT GET TO OWN HER just 'cause she admits she loves you).

6. Ms. Marvel continues to be cute.

7. Storm was...idek. I think I need to process.

8. I am not reading Saga, yet. I'm pretty sure it's going to stomp on my heart.

9. I really liked Into the Dalek, ftr. I mean. I know I was probably drunk while watching it at DC. But. But. Can Clara and Danny make out a lot, please? Also: St. Trinian's: Taking over Doctor Who one episode at a time. (I am trying to work out how the crossover works, give me time)

I'm not that keen on this Doctor so far. They started on a bad note with launching straight into unsubtle take thats to their audience with their `He's still the Doctor, stop whining' and "I'm not your boyfriend" and `Stupid puddinghead humans'. If they want to portray him a different way from the way he has been in his recent incarnations, fine, but blatantly insulting your audience isn't the way to go.

It seems like a mixture of One and Three to me in terms of how he's being played. The Doctor should have grown as a person since then, even if he does need a morality pet (pointed out previously in canon, repeatedly, that companions have acted for him as this). But when Clara says she doesn't know whether he's a good person, but that he's trying and that's what counts, she pinpoints the problem. He isn't trying. In his own words, she's there to care so he doesn't have to. And when he stops caring, that's when he ceases to be the Doctor.

I think in some ways that Moff is sort of soft-rebooting entirely. So Twelve is very One, yes.

And One was pretty much an asshole, so it doesn't really bother me (and we could have had it worse. Six did try to strangle Peri that one time).

There's also the fact that the Doctor is not human and never has been - some of them have been better at portraying that lack of compassion/caring. One, Three, Four, Six, Seven - all of them have had their moments of not seeming to get things (and Seven once shoved his companion into her worst nightmare for her own good).

The audios have given Eight the occasional moment of not getting it/not caring, and Eight is like the fluffiest bunny ever.

I think Moff is just a bit clumsily lampshading it.

I also don't think Twelve likes people very much, which is at least a refreshing change from Ten and Eleven's constant "Humans R SO AWSUM" schtick.

(it's not as though the idea that he's not a good man is new. After all, "Good men don't need rules. You don't want to ask why I have so many." was Eleven. And Ten did that obnoxious Time Lord Victorious thing)

See, I liked Eleven's compassion and his belief that everyone was important, and I also liked that he was self-aware that he was also an asshole - and that River kicked him in the face with that fact more than once. (RIVER.)

Ten bothered me, mostly because I hated that Time Lord Victorious thing. And the Lonely God thing. Is it wrong that I thought Ten needed to get over himself?

Moff is a bit clumsy on the rebooting the Doctor into being more like he used to. A bit. But I got through the regeneration crisis ep (it was okay, not great, but not terrible) and now I'm all excited for them in a way I wasn't after Amy and Rory left. I think Clara really came into her own with Twelve and during the 50th anniversary special, which helps me a lot. She really is good with about any incarnation we've seen thus far.

Wait, which St. Trinian's actor did I not notice on Doctor Who? Wait, Journey! Journey was Bianca! Damn it, I wish she was a companion. I love her a lot.

I wouldn't have minded her joining - crowded TARDISes are hard to juggle, but still fun. Also, she and Clara seemed to get along fine. Also, Twelve needs more annoyances.

(at least in my head she is now hanging out with Oswin the Dalek, who was obviously rescued from the Asylum ages ago by wibbly-wobbly nonsense)

Crowded TARDISes have actually been the most fun for me, adventure-wise, even though I know it's hard for the writers to give attention to the right people. Plus, Journey wasn't afraid of speaking up to the Doctor, which is, to me, the number one criteria for a companion.

(She can hang out with Oswin the Dalek. Oswin the Dalek was awesome. Hey, maybe Clara the Governess is hanging out in whatever-heaven-is with Missy?)

Well, in unfinished fic, Oswin is hanging out with the War Doctor.

It should be fairly easy for me to extrapolate later things like her running into Journey. (even a Dalek needs a retirement plan. She can't go around knocking out Dalek prison camps for the rest of her life)

(I'm about two-thirds finished, so I don't think mentioning it will jinx it. I hope.)

Oh, you're listening to Eight audios too? I started listening to his adventure with Charley but got so inexplicably bored after a while. Maybe I should give it another try... Care to share some preferences? What's the good stuff? (LOL, sorry, I've been collecting recs left and right lately...)

Off the top of my head, good Eight and Charley stuff:

Sword of Orion (It's very Oldskool Who, so I love it. I have heard that it's dull, though, so this is a tastes thing I expect. I've listened to it about thirty or forty times at this point)

Chimes of Midnight - nice, creepy atmosphere
Neverland - Romana's in it!
Zagreus - ok, this is another taste thing because it's long and ridiculous and insane.
Scherzo - weird and a bit gross
I know you're not supposed to skip all of the other-universe cycle stuff, but most of it's dull or gross. If you want to meet C'Rizz, Creed of the Kromon is awful, but it's the only option. The Last is hilarious in its stupidity. Lots of people like Natural History of Fear but I found it dull.
Caerdroia - It's ridiculous and hilarious and fun.
The Next Life - Daphne Ashbrook and Paul Darrow are in it. Only one of them is a ham (Paul). Finishes off the alt-universe cycle
Other Lives - Cute and adorable romp through London.
Time Works - I've lived in this universe.
Memory Lane - ice cream trucks are creepy.
The Girl Who Never Was - follows on from Absolution which I didn't like, but which is possibly essential.

Massive anti-rec: Minuet in Hell. It's pretty much the worst audio I've ever heard, and I've even listened to Sirens in Time.

Wow, that's awesome, thank you! (Also, yay, more Romana! ♥)

She is excellent in any audio she graces (I want to say there's a Sixth Doctor one she's in as well, but I'm blanking on the title).

Also, I keep reminding myself that I don't need to buy the Mary Tamm Romana audios. And yet, I keep almost doing it (BUT ROMANA 1.....)

Ah, the Apocalipse Element you mean? Yep, already listened to that. (LOL, but it might be time for a re-listen, now that I think about it.) I also listened to that lovely Shada audio with Romana and Eight. Oh, and the Companion Chronicles with Romana II. LOL, actually, now that Neverland and Zagreus are on my to-listen list too I don't think there's much left of Lalla's Big Finish Production I haven't already consumed... *shakes head*

/Also, I keep reminding myself that I don't need to buy the Mary Tamm Romana audios. And yet, I keep almost doing it (BUT ROMANA 1.....)/ - Eheh, I totally know that feeling you're talking about... :D
