tv catch-up: Haven and Lost Girl

Haven was renewed for a second season, for those wondering (thank goodness). I'm now caught up on both it and Lost Girl, though the latter only to episode four (five is showing tonight, I think?)

I'm enjoying Lost Girl, though I don't really have much to say about it, other than I hope it keeps up the "sex is not a sin" thing?

Haven, though.

Man.

What do I have the brain for to say about Haven?

Four episodes in a row, of snark and Audrey and Duke and Nathan and Julia and and. I don't know that I have words for that sense of dread that slowly built during the last two until bam.

Two Audrey Parkers

Except that Audrey isn't Audrey, she's Lucy. Reborn or rebirthed, or a hundred things like that (does she remember how she got the injury on her foot?)

I love that this is a show about what feels normal: family drama, and people who can't connect, but it's also got this underlying current of Bad Things that tie everything together until you're going "fuuuuuck."

The Chief said something about holding it all together, and I wonder if he means the universe or Haven or the timeline, or something else entirely, and who held it together before him, and who's job is it now? It wasn't Lucy's last time, it was his, after all. But it could be hers this time around, and is this time repeating itself or the universe fracturing or time travel or is Audrey living her life backwards, or--

all of this has happened before, after all.

Is there a way to stop it? Is the new Audrey Parker a new link in the chain or a sign of the universe falling to pieces?

And, oh, god. The episode where the kid blew himself up, and Audrey. Audrey, you talked him into killing himself I don't even--and it's not like she meant to, and I just. He was right, though. How does she prosecute something like that, with NO evidence?

*hands*

Although, that 'L' was sort of awesome.

Then there's Duke, who's a marked man, and Julia's disappearing tattoo.

does the symbol take a new host when it goes? Is there something that makes Duke the next target for the reason the Kid was originally killed?

So many unanswered questions.

Sigh.

OH SHOW.

And Julia! I <3 her, and sort of ship Audrey/Julia--though, srsly, Nathan with his "Audrey's touch makes him feel things" faces is sort of hot.

I think Audrey (the first one) was never really audrey. We never saw her in the FBI office. I think she was imbued with the identity before she went to haven, but she's not really Audrey.

I'm ok with some of that, but the whole "we make you believe you're someone else and manipulate you to our ends" thing is skeevy.

[identity profile] tafkarfanfic.livejournal.com 2010-10-12 03:29 pm (UTC)(link)
Yes, yes it is. The question is whether the show will present it as skeevy or not.

Yeah, I can get that. I keep waiting for the show to cross my squick line. It's mostly avoided it so far.

I'm still several episodes behind on Haven, so no comment (except to say that it was your posts that pushed me into watching it. Shame on you bad fangirl. :)

Lost Girl--I am seriously loving. I love the totally physical and affectionate non-romantic relationship between Kensi and Bo as absolutely normal. I love the complete normality of Bo being bi--though I guess as a succubus, she falls more along the lines of omni-sexual like Jack...oh my goodness. Talk about a steamy crossover.

I love...ok, that's totally bizarre. I was about to say I love Martouf/Dyson, but that I hadn't realized he was so tall--and then I went to check IMDB and...not the same actor. I was completely convinced that actor had played Martouf on SG1.

Huh. Anyone...hotness of tall, lanky men is hot.

Heh.

she falls more along the lines of omni-sexual like Jack...oh my goodness. Talk about a steamy crossover.

You know what's even better? Bo can't kill Jack permanently. =D

Dyson is growing on me, though I mostly don't pay him much attention outside of being fascinated by fairy politics. (excuse me while I have an obligatory Martouuuuf :/ moment)

Haven - yes, yes, yes, so much yes. I love this show and it wasn't until last week that it even occurred to me to think about whether it was going to get renewed. It was totally a done deal in my mind.

though, srsly, Nathan with his "Audrey's touch makes him feel things" faces is sort of hot.

It's so hot. And then there's the whole scene before the other Audrey showed up, where Nathan's hurt and mad and I was ready to roll my eyes because of course the season was going to end with the two of them in a silly contrived fight because this is genre television. But no! They make the effort to talk to each other and say hey we're partners and we can only do this together. *loves*

I actually heard about the renewal while coding the femlash today update on Thursday. I just forgot until now. AND THERE WOULD HAVE BEEN WORDS WITH SKIFFY....

I was worried they were going to do the contrived "drive a wedge between them and isolate Audrey! hahahahahah!" thing. Because, well, that makes for Dramatic Tension. Bah.

Luckily, they skipped it and made up, and Audrey is gonna mock him for not telling her which might lead to porn.

I need to get caught up on Lost Girl.

I am really upset that I never called my crack!theory about Audrey as it now appears to be correct and now I can't claim that I called it. *shakes fist of rage*

Now I'm wondering if FBI boss guy is actually an FBI agent. He's the only other FBI type person we ever saw Audrey interact with. We never even saw her at an office and the various FBI props can be made easily enough. It's all very confusing. And did she get the real Audrey Parker's memories somehow or is it something that was made up so she wouldn't question her lack of family and friends. Or did she somehow live that life? So many questions.

Could Lucy have been de-aged (bad!fic trope used for canon good?) and then grew up in the orphanage? Cause that's what I had been thinking for awhile, but with the new Audrey Parker showing up it's all sorts of weird.

Spiral people=spiral tattoo? Who are they and why won't they like Audrey? How is Julia connected to them? Also I love that Julie is the one to bring Audrey cupcakes. I'm on board for Audrey/Julia.

I want more now. Now.

Bwahahahah. I'm amused that you had that idea. (I did not, though I wondered if there was some reincarnationy stuff)

I... would like Audrey and him to be real FBI and this to be something like, oh, the universe has shifted around them and they're no longer in the right universe (mostly because the whole "programing Audrey with memories" sort of squicks me, AND YES, I know. CYLONS. So. Glass houses. But the Cylons evolved, and, and, sort of KNEW that's what they were, argh)

I'm leaning towards the wacky de-aged idea. Also, PLEASE GOD IN HEAVEN, DO NOT MAKE LUCY NATHAN'S MOTHER.

Because Audrey/Lucy fixes things, changes the balance of power, causes it all to happen? I've always felt like Audrey was a catalyst--like, the Troubles started without her (maybe), and then she showed up and they jumped into overdrive.

Me, too.

I figured it was too weird even for Haven and thus never posted it as even a crack theory.

I'm hoping that she hasn't been programed with Audrey's memories. That would be bad, but I do want her to remember being Lucy at the same time. Perhaps Audrey will end up being someone completely different personality wise?

this to be something like, oh, the universe has shifted around them and they're no longer in the right universe

Like they move into another universe and the Troubles start up and moving back to the proper universe stops them? And possibly sends Audrey/Lucy into storage?

You know, I hadn't even contemplated Lucy being Nathan's mother. Now I'm going to pretend that Syfy has been way too shippy with those two for it to ever happen. LALALALALALA

Wacky de-aged theory has merit. I was contemplating Audrey traveling back in time until the scar showed up and made it so that couldn't happen.

I've always felt like Audrey was a catalyst

YES! She does things to the Troubles, or to whatever causes the Troubles. I mean things were starting before she came, but they really took off once she was there. And she has a knack for finding and helping Troubled people. IDK.

On Haven:

Something occurred to me while watching the season finale. Do we actually know the Colorado Kid is dead? I mean, everyone seems to "know" he's dead but everyone also seems to have amnesia for that day. Add to that, the case files conveniently disappearing even though it would seem to be a very important case for the Chief considering who was convicted.

Add to that the conversation between Max and someone we all know, I've got to wonder.

Well, Julia has autopsy notes from Eleanor, but maybe they're not from the CK? Maybe the dead person was someone else? Nathan's Mama, Lucy's parent/bf, someone else entirely like the Reverand's daddy?

ugh, do I know that feeling!

[identity profile] tafkarfanfic.livejournal.com 2010-10-12 03:32 pm (UTC)(link)
Here's the one thing that bothers me about Haven:

Every character over the age of 35 is dying - and most of them are being replaced by characters under the age of 35 (see Julia). As someone over the age of 35, the idea of exterminating all of the older interesting characters so we can replace them with young people really bugs me.

I would also like it if we added a female character whose primary character trait was not "romantic foil for Duke and/or Nathan."

[identity profile] tafkarfanfic.livejournal.com 2010-10-12 03:33 pm (UTC)(link)
P.S. Which is not to say I don't love the show! I would just love it even better if these things got tweaked.
ext_18106: (Emma Bishop isn't bothered)

[identity profile] lyssie.livejournal.com 2010-10-13 02:12 am (UTC)(link)
Yes! Yes, that sort of bugs me too. With the idea that these adults who dealt with it the last time are holding back/dying off, so the youngins can Solve Teh Mystery. Which is sort of, um, cute. I guess.

Except that it's not. It's just annoying (I'm still not over Eleanor.)

I sort of think Julia isn't just girlfriend material, but I also don't think they know what to do with her unless she becomes the baddie next season.

Even if the killing them off makes me think of that bit from Leoben--how the parents have to die for the children to prosper.

Bah.
