don't you think that it's strange, that I call you by a different name...

1. Three Planetside Caprica secrets today? *laughs*

2. The Mist was like a giant-ass Soshul Experiment. Yet more boring than an internet troll (srsly, that sort of film is obvsly not my thing) Also, the moral seemed to be: trust in God, do horrific things to your fellow man, and live, yay!

3. hey, Firefly fans, is Jayne's mama still alive? Does she have a name? Do we know what she does for a living (aside from Be Awesome)?

4. Still no word from dude's insurance company.

5. *pets icon*

1. Pardon my ignorance, but what is Planetside Caprica? New webisodes? What? The first secret I saw, I thought someone was confused about Caprica or making it up.

3. I think Jayne's mom mails him the hat that catches up with the ship at the same time as Mal and Zoe's old army buddy, but I think that's all we know of her.

I'd argue that Jayne's tendency to send money back to his mother (as mentioned in her letter to him in "The Message" (not "The Passenger", I'm afraid)) argues against her being a thief-gang-chieftain. But I suppose anything's possible.

The only Canon I know on her is that she is alive as of The Passenger and that she knits. Also her writng is terrible but that could just be Jayne's reading skills. I've pretty much taken Joss's comments the Jayne was inspired by Johny Cash's "Boy Named Sue" and written my own backstory from there.

#2 sounds like RDM's life philosophy...well, all that and make sure you're completely drunk the entire time. :P

I think Jayne's mama would be the most terrifying character that any of them could ever run across. NOT, might I clarify, because she's all bad-A and scary all the time (which would be so cliche' as to be pure awful IMHO), but because you know anybody that can make Jayne feel like an 8 year old must be one of the most fiercely strong/independent characters in all the verse, a reputation which is only added to by her goofy knitting. I'm imagining her making the crew stay for diner and being so looked after by her that Mal would rather be in a gunfight than fear getting his ears boxed by her over his uncivil tongue". :P

It could be sooo fun...;)

2. I couldn't even sit through the whole movie, it was that bad.

3. As others pointed out, the only information we have about Jayne's mother comes from the episode The Message (which I'm guessing was called something else over-seas?). We learn that they exhange letters, that she sends him 'pretty cunning/sweet' hats, and he sends her money. No mention of what she does for a living. There's also someone named Mattie (Matty?) who's ill but we never learn who Matty (Mattie?) actually is. Most fan-fic writers make Mattie a sibling.

Ooh! Ooh! Firefly question! I know this!

As others have mentioned, we only ever get one actual mention of Jayne's mother. The fact that Jayne, a relatively low-rent thug, sends money home argues that the family are poor, which is born out by the rough wooden box and straw packaging that are around the hat. (I love those little details that flesh things out.)

There are a couple of other things that give hints. In the pilot, Jayne sheepishly bows his head when Book prays before a meal, bathes and puts on his best shirt to go whoring in 'Heart of Gold', and takes off his cunning hat in honour of the dead in 'The Message'. Jayne may be a crook now, but his mama clearly raised him some variety of right before he went bad.
