Logic Dictates
by ALC Punk!

Anastasia Dualla was raised to be a good girl. Raised to put others before herself, and raised to believe that things would work out right in the end. The cylons, however, had other ideas. Of course, she'd had different ideas, too. She'd joined the military, tried to do something good with her life. The irony was, she wasn't sure anymore what that 'good' could be. Her marriage? If her instincts were right, her husband was contemplating divorce. Her career? Well, when there's only one battlestar left, there's no point in trying to impress the upper echelons. And she'd been XO, for a short time. Now she wasn't. The demotion hurt less than she'd thought it would.

The one thing she was not raised to be was a guerilla. They'd covered basic combat in her classes at the academy, but nothing like the sort of thing she needed for sneaking around a sniper. And that was what she was going to have to do--if she was to accomplish her objective.

Logic told her there was only one thing to do: take the sniper out. Logic was annoying that way.

With Fischer's blood still in her nostrils, she moved through cover as best she could--if someone had told her she'd be flat on her belly, with twigs digging into her skin two years after enlisting, she would have told them to lay off the ambrosia.

The cover was barely adequate.

She'd been hiding for ten minutes before she finally spotted the tiny movement up on the cliff above her. It was barely a movement, almost more as though the waiting sniper were letting out a breath. Which didn't make sense. If it was a toaster, there'd be no point in breathing. Hell, Dee was impressed the damned thing moved at all.

But it was enough to tell her where it was.

Not that she had any frakking clue how to get up to it. Or rather, she did, she just didn't think the climbing lessons she'd had were still in her muscles.

Her father, she thought in wry amusement, would be telling her to stay under cover and await a rescue. But Dee was the rescuer, and she had a duty, even if it chafed. Logically, she had been the closest to Starbuck's position, so logically, she and Fischer were the team to send. Just as logic had dictated that she, as the most experienced communications officer, anchor the relay. Logic didn't take into account who Starbuck was, and who her commanding officer was.

Logic, Dee decided as she slithered backwards and slowly stood to flatten herself against the ridge, was a cold companion.

If she were Starbuck, she would have some wacky plan to get up there and take out the sniper. Since she wasn't, Dee settled for quietly climbing, hands and feet finding the same footholds the sniper must have used.

Halfway up the ridge, she paused to listen. There was no indication the sniper had heard her. The thought came to her that it could simply be waiting for her, at the top. It would let her expend all her energy and then shoot her between the eyes. Morbidly, she wondered if she'd make a pretty corpse.

She shoved the thought away and concentrated on one hand and then the other, moving in a rhythm until her muscles ached and the sweat stung her eyes.

When her breathing became too labored, she stopped again, forehead pressed against the rock and sucked in shallow breaths.

Sound came to her, drifting from somewhere above.

The sniper was talking to himself.

Her breathing slowed, Dee continued, half-listening to the rambling of a madman. At least, the toaster sounded more than a little frakked in the head.

The muttering seemed to center around Starbuck--and Dee wished, for an instant, that she wasn't jealous. Starbuck, Starbuck, Starbuck. It was always about Starbuck. She gritted her teeth and tried to block out the inanity of prophecies and Starbuck and streams of consciousness.

Her hand finally met the edge of the ridge and she pulled herself up and onto the grass, trying to pant softly.

A footstep made her look up.

One of the male model cylons was standing there, looking down at her. His side-arm was in his hand, but he didn't seem inclined to point it at her, yet.

Dee recognized the Leoben Conoy model, and sighed. Of course he was obsessed with Starbuck.

"Hello, Lieutenant."

It occurred to Dee that she'd never actually been in the front lines until now. Oh, she'd had her moments of danger in CIC--getting zapped by the cylon virus, abandoning Pegasus. But none of those had felt real. None had felt as though she might actually die. There'd always been Adama (or Lee) to back her up, to pull her out of the fire.

She doesn't have that luxury, here. She only had herself--and Starbuck, but Starbuck's probably unconscious or worse.

"Not even going to get up to greet me?" The Leoben tsked and smiled at her. It was creepy to see his lips stretch into a semblance of happiness. "You have a task, you know. Your destiny isn't as valued, as some. But your time will come, Anastasia."

"Does it have to do with killing you?" Dee asked him, tone thick with sarcasm. Her hand brushed over her sidearm, flipping the safety off. Just in case.

"You will have a purpose, in the small things," he mused, "And your children will become more than the sum of their parents."

Children. Yeah. Dee rolled her eyes and stood, hand closing on the butt of her sidearm. She wasn't as fast as any of the pilots, but she was still a good shot. He just had to give her an opening.

Leoben half-smiled at her, then gestured expansively, arms swinging wide. "God has a message for you, Lieutenant."

"Yeah?" Dee yanked her sidearm free and fired, the bullet taking the cylon in the chest. The impact knocked him backwards and over the edge of the cliff. "Tell your God I said hi."

Her training told her to check the cliff top for more of the enemy. Dee found none. She did, however, discover a perfect vantage point to look down on Starbuck's downed raptor. She studied the completely open terrain and sighed. If nothing else, she had hopefully taken out the only sniper. But she wasn't going to count on that.

Pulling her binoculars, she studied the ridges and valleys around her, trying to spot movement or shiny toasters.

There was nothing. Nothing but green, shale, rocks and more dirt. Absently, Dee swiped some of the sweat off her brow, leaving behind even more smudges. When this was over, she was so taking a long shower.

Alone.

Checking one last time, Dee decided on her route down the ridge. It would be difficult, but the faster she went, the faster she'd be able to get under cover by the raptor. She didn't like leaving her ass exposed and hanging for anyone to shoot at. Putting the safety on, she holstered her weapon and then took a breath, let it out, and began the difficult climb down.

All in all, she may not have trained for this, but maybe she could do it.

She just had to keep a cool head and let logic work her through it, one step at a time.

Good one! Especailly after Leoben's scene(s) on the planet seemed to be cut. It would make sense that Dee might have to get rid of him before making it to the raptor to help Starbuck. I like your stories :)

Thank you. =)

His scenes being cut is ridiculous, especially since there was so much talk about how they worked extra hard to have time for his scenes to be shot!

And, well, of course he'd be lurking by his human girlfriend. It's not like he gives a crap about D's Vision Quest...

[identity profile] iamann.livejournal.com 2007-01-24 03:03 am (UTC)(link)
Haha yeah... It's all about Starbuck Starbuck Staarbuck :)

You are absolutely right that after all we read about how hard it is to secure CKR for guest spots and then cut out his scenes... what a total waste.

Totally did not go where I expected it to! Way to explain the Leoben promo pic. :0) And I like the idea of Dee as a rock climber - the tenacity and focus suit her.

Very nice!

Thank you =)

Whoot! I was uncertain about the rock climbing, but it worked (and I needed it to work), once I realized it would be something that would require serious focus. (Kara, for instance, not a rock climber. Neither are Kat, Hot Dog, or Gaeta....)

[identity profile] indigo419.livejournal.com 2007-01-24 03:27 am (UTC)(link)
Kara, for instance, not a rock climber.

Right - the Viper pilots need an opponent, or at least some kind of public display in their rec sports.

I bet Dee does yoga, too. ;0)

*guh*

This fic is PERFECT! I love Dee and her practicality and her sarcasm and her attention to duty and wanting to take a long shower alone. I love that she doesn't *need* Lee or the Old Man to back her up because she can take care of herself, thankyouverymuch.

Thank you.

I can blame part of the "one woman army" thing on Greg Pak's recent issue of the BSG comic, and the fact that, in their society, gender is equal. So, Dee? Doesn't need a man anymore than, say, some random marine guy needs a chick to save his ass. It's all equal.

And Dee might be a tiny little woman, but she's a soldier, and it may've been a long time since her basic training, but she's a survivor, too.

Er. In conclusion, BSG women are damned cool.

And thank you. =)

I have no idea. I don't speak Leoben all that often. ;)

Thank you!

(Yes, of course she did. *hearts Dee*)

[identity profile] centerspire.livejournal.com 2007-01-24 04:22 am (UTC)(link)
I guess I'll just have to make that up on my own!

[identity profile] lizardbeth-j.livejournal.com 2007-01-24 06:31 am (UTC)(link)
I have no Dee icon. I wanted one to comment, and I looked, and I don't have one. This is wrong... I need to find one.

ANYway.

Fic! Dee, being very Dee-ish. And Leoben, what a great surprise -- and he's toast. love her. and yeah, WTF is up with all his scenes getting cut out? I'm starting to think it's not for time or unimportance, that there's a reason -- midstream change of plan maybe?

[identity profile] lyssie.livejournal.com 2007-01-24 01:08 pm (UTC)(link)
Yesss. I need to make some, I've just been lax.

I was kind of half-joking in my head, "what if the scenes cut were Dee and Leoben?" because, well, he obviously didn't get to Kara...

Huh, the change of plan might be possible. I hadn't thought of that.

Thank you =)

[identity profile] lizardbeth-j.livejournal.com 2007-01-24 06:10 pm (UTC)(link)
I am possibly ascribing deep thought to something which was just stupidity or accident -- but it occurred to me that as TPTB started to get a clue about Anders, both his popularity and the character's adaptability, that we've seen a lot less about Leoben. I guess what I'm wondering is whether Anders is going/has already taken over part of the arc that Leoben was planned to have. And so they're cutting Leoben.

I mean, looking at Occ/Precipice he seemed to have a definite plan with Kara going on. And yet, all these eps later, he's barely spoken three words, and nothing about her at all. I know he'll be in Maelstrom (sort of), but it seems odd that he seems to have been intended for some kind of subplot in EoJ/Rapture that was completely cut out. I'll have to watch again but even his bits on the baseship struck me as odd, like maybe some of the dialogue was replaced.

or, I could just be making it all up! But it's a theory.

[identity profile] lyssie.livejournal.com 2007-01-25 12:44 am (UTC)(link)
That... is an interesting theory. I have another one. You remember, back at the beginning of the season, Trucco was saying he was going to be in, like, five episodes at most? Heck, I've got an interview from sometime last year where he says he's only in three, because of scheduling conflicts....

Trucco has been in eight episodes out of twelve (counting next week).

I don't know how great the fan popularity has been for him, of course. But I'm beginning to wonder if he's going to end up a regular. Which, well, that was always one of BSG's problems, for new characters--it's essentially a bottle show. Everyone we have to play with already showed up. Except Sam.

Hrm.

[identity profile] lizardbeth-j.livejournal.com 2007-01-25 02:41 am (UTC)(link)
But dude, we already know he's signed as a regular for S.4 (assuming it goes, of course). He had just signed, THAT DAY, back in November when he came to the Burbank con. And he said at that time that they had found a story for him that was separate to him being Kara's love interest.

So, see that just adds to my theory. He was expected to be in only the first few of the season, to finish off the Kara/Anders-in-the-occupation thing at the beginning (through Collaborators,is my guess). And then, somewhere along the line, the PTB were designing the season finale and this thing they're planning to do with Kara, and I suspect they decided that it was going to play better with Sam, rather than Leoben. So Sam's role has been clicking along as part of the Quadrangle, and Leoben has practically dropped out of sight, all so we can get to Sam's new deal at the end of the season. If it's NOT him being one of the Five, I've got no clue, but it SEEMS (perhaps) to be connected to this wacky "Let's hire CKR for eight episodes and yet wind up with two lines" thing.

Or, they're purposefully cutting Leoben out so that his "return" is that much more dramatic, which is kinda goofy, but possible. Dunno.
ext_18106: (Anders Days so far from home)

[identity profile] lyssie.livejournal.com 2007-01-25 03:27 am (UTC)(link)
No, we know he's going to be a recurring character, a la Chief. What I'm wondering is if he's going to end up a main cast member. (and if so, will the fandom wank outside of flock so I can see it)

*nods* I think they were going to let Collabs be it, for them. But something changed. I--you know, I seem to recall that Bamber wanted them to change stuff for his character. Maybe they decided to hedge their bets a little?

And the Dramatic Return... sigh. That could also be true. Oh, Skiffy.

[identity profile] lizardbeth-j.livejournal.com 2007-01-25 04:27 am (UTC)(link)
Oh, ok, I get what you were saying. right, we don't know whether he'll be in title credits or after. I suspect after, just based on where Tahmoh is (since their place in the overall scheme of things is roughly equivalent). I suppose it depends on what his Sam's arc is going to be (and if anyone else is leaving).

The wank if he got into the main titles would be something to behold, yes. Fans of everyone else who's not in the titles would be all horrified that their precious wasn't there (it's some sort of gold star, who knew?). *eye roll*

Wasn't the Bamber stuff related to how he pretty much has done nothing this season, and even the PTB were acknowledging they didn't know what to do with Lee? But yeah, hedging their bets in case he left is also quite possible.

You know that Dee probably wants kids. It's a little early for them, but I think she does. And I think Lee wants kids, too. And they will produce frighteningly smart and capable children.

[identity profile] lizardbeth-j.livejournal.com 2007-01-24 06:19 pm (UTC)(link)
no, no, that's not how it works! Lee/Dee kids are going to be total pot-heads, do badly in school, fail basic training, and date Cylons out of spite. *nods*

Giggle 'pot heads' *emo heads* if they take after daddy!

This is good it got my girl in it, and showing she got a pair even if they are not Lee's. She shot my sex bomb. I like CKR a lot. Can you expand on the children outdoing the parents and her part in it. Incorporate Caprica she's on the Bucket now living in Athena's old bunk. That could different.

Dee my girl, Bitter and Angry but a loyal officer. (Still needs to kick him in the balls. He is an idiot). LYSSIE YOU HOWEVER ARE A STAR.

*laughs* This is true.

Dee is, in the end, a very very good officer. And she doesn't give up, I don't think. She's very strong and very sure of herself. And very smart.

Er, and as to the kids, I don't have any ideas. Sorry.

Dee always tends to just cut to the heart of things, if that's the correct metaphor. She usually just does it verbally, but there's definitely an essential practicality to her.
