I was sat here reading that thread thinking 'but Daniel's a Mary-Sue, Jonas is probably a Mary-Sue, Jack's the anti-hero variety of Mary-Sue and Teal'c is, when you think about it, also a Mary-Sue'.

In fact there is probably evidence to suggest every character ever in the history of television, film, theatre and literature is in fact a Mary-Sue.

Uh-huh. That's why she was so repressed and stopped listening to her instincts, and continued to be engaged to Pete (no offence the Pete, but COME ON).

Does anyone remember the chip she had on her shoulder in the beginning? How about her uncertainty about command in the early seasons?

I've long thought that all good characters are Mary Sues (And many many bad ones as well. ;))

Almost all characters take on aspects of their creators, either conciously or unconciously. And with the nature of fiction, more often than not the main characters win the day, so there's definite 'perfection' standards being reached there, since they have to win through, and then this is compounded by a weekly program where they save the world on a regular basis.

It's all in the execution of the character.

Again I am glad that I miss out on these kerfuffles by only hanging out on LJ. Ohyeah, I am on one or two of those yahoogroup lists, but they're run by teh coolest mods.
