sff: Lost Girl 2x22 (season finale)
I am glad we already know there's a third season.
In preparing to write this review, I went back and read my review of the first season's finale. In doing so, I rediscovered some loathing for the show, so I'm going to get that out of the way first.
The first season is basically filled with dudes telling Bo what to do, as they know better (because penis). The season ends with "Your mama was a sex slave for centuries, and you still don't know shit, so here's our manly-man help forced onto you without your request, consent or knowledge."
The second season has been filled with dudes telling Bo what to do, but the playing field has been more leveled, and in fact--one of the dudes makes her the Light champion and believes she'll be able to win the day where he cannot. It's also had the Morrigan trying to order her around a few times, too. However, this season ended with "Your grandda stopped the garuda out of pride and rage, and also you came up with the idea to use everyone's strength/etc of their own free will and your consent. You miiiight go evil, but maybe not. And Kenzi is your bff forevah."
See the difference? Yeah. This season has had its ups and downs, but it's been better than the first, and the ridiculously over-the-top epicness of the last few episodes has made me gleeful. I'm not happy about some aspects (Nadia and Ciara's deaths, for one thing; Lachlan being framed as a Good Guy, for another), but on the whole, I am far more satisfied with the ending than I was last year.
Hell, I almost didn't watch the first couple episodes of this season because I was so disappointed in the finale last year. This year? I CANNOT WAIT OMG.
The finale had its stupid moments (everyone getting lost in the garuda's maze, Dyson lives, Vex lives), but it was pretty solid, and it pulled some threads together and opened a bunch more plotlines.
Of course, at the bottom of my list of new threads (and one I do not look forward to, fuck, why isn't Dyson dead?) is the "Dyson tries to get Lauren to go away because Bo is Totally his woman" bullshit. I really hope they drop this, because if I have to suffer more of Dyson, I don't know what I'll do. I don't normally wish people would die in a show, but I wish he would (and it's not even out of a shipper thing. I just CANNOT STAND DYSON and his manly-man "I know best, I am man, you are weak and stupid woman" bullshit, and he gets away with it all the fucking time--hell, the best thing ever was Ciara almost knifing him during sex. CIARA, WHY DIDN'T YOU LIVE? You were way more interesting!) Especially since we'll probably have to suffer through lots of "Dyson tries to do what's best and restrain his desires, because he's such a niiiice guy" bullshit.
The threads I can think of that I'd like to see explored:
1. The Morrigan and her plots/plans for Bo--I seriously feel like Ryan was a set-up? I may have to write it myself (as much as I don't want to). I want to know why the Morrigan hasn't messed with Bo more before this, and especially what the Morrigan will think of Vex's report that Bo 'almost' went insane.
1a. otoh, maybe the Morrigan knows that, like Aoife, insane!Bo is best left as a future resort?
2. Bo having to deal with her darkside/come to terms with the fact that being all powerful is NOT a good thing. I love that she gave up her chance at 'cleansing' herself to save Trick, as I was hoping we'd get this sort of "she could go Dark Phoenix, but she has control" plot. I just hope it's sort of stretched through the whole season (I know, I'm asking a lot--especially of a show that doesn't do well with season-long plotlines without muffing a few things along the way). idk. We'll see.
3. Kenzi. A part of me so hopes that Kenzi is now part-Fae/Immortal/some hilariously silly thing like that. Unfortunately, I expect it to be a disease or something killing her. I also really hope her One True Love, the creepy "I was in love with you when I was six" dude never returns. *shudder* (so, I wonder what she got infected with while visiting the Norn--after all, the Norn said "a bargain is struck" or something to that effect)
4. Val. Hale's sister is amazing. Can we keep her and boot Dyson? (ok, not really a plot-thread, but. sigh)
5. Trick coming to terms with being off-balance. I don't think the garuda was lying--I think that Isabeau's death WAS ordered by whatsisface, and that if Trick had been killed that it might have stopped the war. I am GLAD something has shaken his confidence in Always Being Right. Because I don't think he has been, and it's coming back to bite him on the ass.
5a. Also, ALISEN DOWN. Goddammit, Jean Barolay was Fae.
6. Lauren. I feel like she has a new confidence in herself and her abilites, that maybe she'll be able to walk away from the new Ash/work for her/him on her own terms, and fight to stay at Bo's side. (I also think Lauren is going to be key to keeping Bo from eating stars and broccoli-people. Well, I'd like to think so, at least)
Other questions/thoughts:
Does Aoife know that the seal of the Blood King was on the orders that murdered her mother? Is that why she broke away from both Light and Dark and tried to have her own faction?
Will Bo's ultimate destiny be to follow her mother's footsteps and prove that unaligned Fae don't need either side? Or that they're stronger without such specious alliances? One of the threads of both seasons has been that neither side is really that different than the other (I think both have the same lack of care for the humans around them).
Will we have more flashbacks to Bo's gramma?Should there be an episode where Isabeau and Trick switch places, and she's now the one Bo confides in, that would be so awesome, ngl
Bo loves them all! OMG. <3 Ok, no, I love how that scene with Lauren and Bo was played. Bo's "I love you" followed by this pause and then she hastily adds "all of you" like that CHANGES anything. Oh, Bo, wearing your heart on your sleeve is totally allowed, honey.
It is hilarious how epic the show suddenly became.
And I'm probably the minority in this, but I like that Dyson's Big Fight with the garuda was mostly them glaring at each other? To me, the point of the show isn't a bunch of manly-men dudebros throw-down with each other, but Bo, and how she shapes her own destiny and the world around her. So the lack of "look, dudes with no shirts on, beating each other, unf!" shit was really nice.
To me, the whole point was that Bo is the Champion, and it was truly HER fight, even if that fight ended up being simply stabbing a needle into the garuda (because biting him would have been any less anticlimactic). She got to do sword-play beforehand, and there was epic wind machine action AND her eyes were all glowy AND she might have defeated him without him going into Trick--
But I think the garuda was still banking on her not wanting to kill Trick--even if they did have something up their sleeves. (and I sometimes wonder how much the garuda could read from their minds; is it just that he prods at unquiet doubts, or emotions that spill into those thoughts? Hard to say)
I felt like this was a good, solid episode that dealt with the immediate threat and set up more plotlines. Unlike last year? I am eagerly awaiting the new season.
Things I would have liked to go differently:
1. The Morrigan instead of Vex.
2. Dyson dead instead of Ciara.
3. Nadia saved somehow. (ok, the angst and drama might have been uncomfortable, but still!)
Otherwise, I've enjoyed this season a lot.
