More on Chase
Yes, I have watched all ten available episodes now.
It's possible I'm giving the show too much credit, but I really do like it. Especially since a lot of the time, it's basically got women being awesome.
Favorite moment ever? Annie talking a high society wife who was hysterical about her husband getting shot into saving herself by first barricading the door, then breaking the window and jumping out so she could run to the neighbors.
I just. THIS SHOW, YOU GUYS. Any other show, that woman would have been dead/broken something/been shot/raped/whatever.
(it's been a long time since I watched a show where women weren't treated as constant Sex Objects, so it's a bit disconcerting)
This isn't to say it's perfect, mind. Just... not fail, like SVU is with its constant "LOOK AT THESE HOT RAPE VICTIMS" camera-work.
Spoilers, I s'pose:
Most of my dislikes of the show 1. its lack of interest in its main characters (we know barely ANYTHING about most of them), 2. it follows the fugitives TOO MUCH (srsly, do not caaaare about them, though there are exceptions like Lobo and surprise!Jennifer Morrison), 3. breaking in doors. ALL THE TIME. (I suppose they're a law unto their own or whatever, but it's sometimes hard to suspend my disbelief unless I think of them as vigilantes) 4. All that taxpayer money being spent on five billion helicopters and private planes and shit (real law enforcement wishes it had that sort of budget).
I love that this show is basically Annie and her team, and she's in charge and NO ONE CARES. I love that she's the one who runs things and takes point (and when she's not there, the team still carries on, but there's a bit of revenge involved).
I love that the show had a Twilight-mocking episode where an Older Man took a teenage girl on a spree and learned that he was evil (HE HAD THE SKIN OF A KILLER, I'm telling you, I expected that line to come up). Though I've no real idea as to whether mocking Twilight was their plan, but the idea of "your boyfriend controls you/stalks you out of Looooove" isn't new, but it wasn't romanticized. ALSO. The girl realized her mistake and took control of her own life.
I love that this show is constantly showing that women can empower themselves and take control and that it's a GOOD THING to do so.
I love that Daisy and Annie had a conversation that was basically pointing out how ridiculous it was that women don't connect with each other, because they have to get ahead or whatever. Ok, so maybe it wasn't pointed meta-commentary on every other Lone Woman Wolf show, but still!
I love that every time I expect the standard "women in danger = rape" trope, it never happens. It's not even implied. WHAT IS UP WITH THAT? I've come to expect shows to throw rape at women everywhere, to constantly fail at making it about them as people instead of their vaginas.
Even though the show has now had evil!lesbians, it still doesn't bother me. It possibly helps that the episode followed the evil!boyfriend one, and there's just enough backstory to make it not seem skeevy? Also, well, it wasn't about a bunch of guys sitting around, giggling about chicks having sex.
I do sort of wish they'd acknowledge that there are more than straight people in the world, but that would be expecting too much, I s'pose.
Like, that one episode where they were in a para-military compound and someone found a condom, and the one dude was like "we don't allow women here" and I said "so the boys were, y'know..." BUT NO, the first conclusion was "Oh, you're teaching them to build bombs." since they use condoms to hold liquids and stuff. It is possible I've also been in fandom too long.
so, people:
Annie Frost. Tough, no-nonsense, profiles victims and fugitives alike. Is very good at her job. Mom died when she was eight, dad sounds like he's a con artist/criminal of some sort and is currently whereabouts unknown. Sort of married to the job. Except for the bounty hunter dude who makes her act about fifteen (omg, it's hilarious to watch her around him, she gets all grins and dimples or whatever). Has a big dog named 59, and a nice apartment.
Jimmy. er, I'm sure he has a last name? Um... Tough, no-nonsense. Has a girlfriend that he has trouble with because she doesn't like his job or guns. I think he's known Annie longest, and might have a thing for her? I don't know, it rings more like the comrades in arms kinda thing where they've been partners in this gig for a while. Likes hunting.
Daisy Ogbaa. Tough, no-nonsense. Worked bomb squad with Houston PD before joining the marshals (can still defuse a bomb if required). Is ok with casual sex (and isn't punished for it) and likes beer and tequila. Has five older brothers and grew up probably trying to prove herself since her parents kept putting her in dresses and frills.
Marco. Tough, etc. Very good at his job. He's sort of the wit of the group, though they all can make dry observations. Has a girlfriend that he sometimes plans nice dinners with that work interrupts. Bilingual, and had one of the best lines ever (white older woman after rambling story got Marco and Daisy's 'wut faces': "don't you people speak english?" "Si.")
Luke. Graduated the top of his class. His daddy's a lobbyist in Washington and a senator tried to give him a job. Not as tough as the others, but getting there. Sort of innocent, but an excellent shot. Enjoyed hunting when Jimmy took him out.
This show was created by a woman, and seems to have women on the writing AND directing staff. Maybe that's why it's mostly good at the "women are people" thing?

Though the evil!lesbians weren't evil because they were lesbians from what I saw. More that one went to the dark side after being abused, from what I can remember, and the other was too naive.
Also, Annie talking the freaking out rich lady to safety was indeed all kinds of awesome. I had expected her not to make it, but man, she did on an awesome mattress. Score one for Annie's power going over a phone, too.

Still enjoy it.

I think my favorite "wait, what?" on the time to drive places was that one where everyone went to Vegas in, like, an hour. There was a plane ride involved, but it didn't seem to make a difference.
