lyssie: (River Song rocks my socks)

history: being distracting and femslashy.

1. This whole returning to work thing after a three-day weekend suuuuuucks.

2. Today's adventures in Wikipedia involved Virginia Woolf. I have come to the conclusion that Wikipedia is an horrific influence. You guys. Woolf gender-swapped her girlfriend and wrote a novel about her. Complete, iirc, with boyslash. She's like the grandmama of boyslash genderswap kinks.

3. Why is there no Virginia Woolf RPFS? No, really, WHY? Is it because she's a bi-sexual married to an athiest Jew and writes novels and thus does not exist? eta: to be fair, I haven't gone on any sort of extensive search, but I don't recall ever seeing it cross the femslash_today lists. Hrm.

4. So, the problem then becomes: How many times did River Song visit Virginia, and were they lovers? Obviously, yes, but then, why did River keep returning? For the same reason Vita S-W (whom Virginia carried on a 20-year affair with) did? Obviously, Virginia is a woman who attracts people, fascinating them in some measure.

5. Speaking of Vita, the woman is a marvel in her own way, including cross-dressing as a man to hang out with her girlfriend in Italy. Apparently, she used to run off and take her kids along for the affair.

6. I know, Wikipedia isn't the highest measure of factual evidence.

7. I should actually be writing Sparky fic, whoops.

3. It was requested for Yuletide last year! Previous years the RPF categories are really messed up so I can't tell if any of them are about the Bloomsbury group or not, but you could always request it again. Well, not the x-over part. :)

huzzah!

Also, to be fair, I haven't gone looking. I shall do so, but, er, later, when I'm not shirking my sparktober duties.

I went to Yuletide because I was pretty sure if it existed at all, it would be there. And the prompt wasn't filled. So I'm sure you're right. I don't know off hand if there's a biographical film that might inspire fic? That's probably a more fruitful avenue to search than in RPF-proper.

er, not that I'm not totally shirking what I should be doing right now, no... *shifty*

hahahah. That was sort of my reaction as I read the wiki entries. My eyebrows kept raising up higher and higher. =D

Sally Potter made the book in point #2, into a movie starring Tilda Swinton. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Orlando_(film)

I had a professor in college who loved Virginia Woolf, and so I had all of her novels, at least until a certain someone burned them, along with my philosophy textbook and several other books I needed for school, for being satanic. *eyeroll* Now that I'm not poor any more, I should replace them.

I'm ashamed to say I've never read anything by her, but she is now on my list. If only because I should really do some classics reading, at some point.

I know one RPF story about Virginia Woolf, iirc -- the short story "It's Important to Believe", by Joanna Russ (which appears in the collection The Hidden Side of the Moon).

I'm sure there's femslashy mentions of Virginia Woolf in I. Vampire and/or Passing For Human (can't remember the author and not at home to check my copies, but both books were from The Women's Press).
