This is actually something that's been bothering me for a while

(ever since I finished watching two seasons of Burn Notice)

It's just managed to crop up in BSG fandom, though.

And it's sort of very simple:

Telling a skinny girl to eat a sandwich is just as demeaning, destructive and derogatory as telling a fat girl to stop eating.

Point blank.

You. Do. Not. Have. The. Right. to dictate what other people should look like.

Unless you, personally, know that this person is puking and eating nothing and starving themselves? You don't have the right. And even if you do know it? YOU STILL DO NOT HAVE THE RIGHT.

YES! JESUS FRAKKING CHRIST, YES!

I am so pissed off that there is not one place I've found in the Burn Notice fandom where I can talk about the new episodes without having at least 12 people talk about how 'gross' Gabrielle Anwar is. And the BSG thing pissed me off too when I saw it.

God, why can't we all just be grateful for boobs? Boobs are awesome, having them automatically makes us all awesome ;)

Hahahahah. Boobs. Yes.

I will freely admit that before I watched the show, I really did think she was underweight. But she has muscle, an incredibly active job and three kids.

:( I have seen many people say things like this, in many fandoms, and it always annoys me.

It freaks me out, because people get up in arms over mocking fat people, but skinny people are fair game. And it's stupid, because the insults hurt on either side (not to mention, NOT HELPING if said person DOES have eating disorder issues)

It's not even just that. It's the "x is too skinny, he/she must be starving/dieting to stay so thin, that is SO UNHEALTHY" line of thought which makes me want to punch people.

THANK YOU for this.

Amen.

A-freakin-men.

Bodies come in all shapes and sizes. If you want to rant about how only 1 type of body ever shows up on tv or in movies, then I'm there. But passing judgment on anyone is not acceptable, even under the guise of "health."

Yes. The problem isn't what any individual woman looks like. (And especially making presumptive judgements about her health.) The problem is that one particular female body type has become the standard of beauty that other women may or may not have a difficult time living up to.

ITA with all of this.

[identity profile] mfirefly10.livejournal.com 2009-10-31 06:05 pm (UTC)(link)
Agreed.

Body image issues effect everyone, thin or heavy, young or old, male or female...So just knock it off and accept people for who they are and not what they look like.

Oh yes. And using "real women" to refer to "not thin women" is just as annoying. And I'm a really, really fat person.

a. you're right. no question.

b. human race seems to somehow manage to KEEP ITSELF STUPID to a surprising degree. My general faith that the world is getting saner is tested every time I stumble on someone who fell through the cracks and has no idea what century this is.
