Certain segments did, and probably still do. That fandom was my first encounter with the full-scale batshit crazy animosity toward a female character that we're so sick of now. My one local fannish friend around my age when I was living at home after college happened to be the fan club president, and she was continually amazed and appalled by some of the things people would say to her about not just Tessa but Alexandra -- secure in the assumption that of course Krys would agree with them. We'd sit in her living room and just boggle at each other over stapling newsletters. She was the friggin Antichrist to some of these people.
The one that sticks out in my mind was this woman who had a serious bug up her ass about the size of Alexandra's feet. I shit you not. She went on about it at length, like she was personally offended by a woman (who is, incidentally, just shy of six feet tall!) with big feet on her television.
Or, more to the point, near her Mac. Which was of course the real issue, with Tessa or any other woman who, like, so much as exchanged words with him. It's not like we didn't all know that back then. So the people thinking they can pull the wool over our eyes know are that much more comical to me.
