*watches Highlander: the Gathering*

So, like. Does Highlander fandom hate Tessa?

eta: also. The Gathering is really really bad.

ahahah. Which is sad. Tessa is a charter member of the Boys Are Stupid Eye-rolling club. (Liz and Teyla have carried on the tradition)

...asdjkdf. I'm so glad I'm too late to be near this fandom.

...I didn't like her. But at least she didn't try to sex McLeod when he keeled himself in front of her, like the bimbo with Connor. She was SMRT with the phone callin'. :)

I've been out of Highlander fandom for years, but they didn't when I was in it. Of course, I didn't really hang with the slash fen. I read a lot of gen and het.

Unsurprising, I know.

There's not enough Highlander femslash. Just saying.

Amanda would like Tessa's practicality. I think. But then, I haven't actually seen them interact and Amanda might hate her canonically.

(but yes, I was pondering how to femslash it up... it helps that Richie's new friend thinks Tessa is hot. *amused*)

Sadly, at the beginning, it wasn't so much the slash fen as the living clichés of romance-novel junkies who would have been perfectly happy if the show had been nothing but 43 minutes of shirtless Mac swinging a sword around. Tess couldn't be good enough for him (and was, in fact, the Antichrist) because she wasn't them. Apparently they lacked the imagination to just identify with her.

I was big into Highlander. I recall Tessa being fairly popular. Most of the Fan-Hate was focused on Richie. The Richie hate was horrendous.

What? How the heck could anyone hate Richie?!

THAT JACKET IS LIKE THE WORST THING EVER.

Yes, the green jacket was a travesty made of leather. Good thing I don't recall it making any reappearances, unless I'm just blacking it out.

I have no idea how they could hate dear Richie. But they did. (I absolutely adored him.)

Well, good. I was... expecting them to hate her, since she's independent and takes no crap from Mac.

I know what you mean.

[identity profile] lizardbeth-j.livejournal.com 2008-10-14 05:54 am (UTC)(link)
Heh, I would've taken Tessa in Richie's place in a heartbeat and I resented him the rest of the show, so I guess that makes me a Richie-hater. I didn't talk to a lot of Tessa-haters, but I was barely on the fringes anyway and only while the show was on. So what the fandom 'matured' into, I have no idea, but I'm not surprised.

Eh. I didn't hate Tessa, but Methos episodes are only ones I really watch anymore--or Joe & Amanda episodes.

Seriously, the best actors in Highlander were the supporting, and the occasional decent guest stars.

*sigh* Methos.

Certain segments did, and probably still do. That fandom was my first encounter with the full-scale batshit crazy animosity toward a female character that we're so sick of now. My one local fannish friend around my age when I was living at home after college happened to be the fan club president, and she was continually amazed and appalled by some of the things people would say to her about not just Tessa but Alexandra -- secure in the assumption that of course Krys would agree with them. We'd sit in her living room and just boggle at each other over stapling newsletters. She was the friggin Antichrist to some of these people.

The one that sticks out in my mind was this woman who had a serious bug up her ass about the size of Alexandra's feet. I shit you not. She went on about it at length, like she was personally offended by a woman (who is, incidentally, just shy of six feet tall!) with big feet on her television.

Or, more to the point, near her Mac. Which was of course the real issue, with Tessa or any other woman who, like, so much as exchanged words with him. It's not like we didn't all know that back then. So the people thinking they can pull the wool over our eyes know are that much more comical to me.
