Oh, Atlantis fandom... Never stop sucking.

Anyway. In response to this "best team evah!" thingie which contains 3/4 of said team, not all of it, I made this.

1. Contains spoilers for Atlantis season four.
2. I stopped watching over four weeks ago. If any of this has changed (yeah, right), it's not my fault.

eta: Edited Teyla's for clarification

And I expect that you heard the news that the lovely Ms. Tapping was heading off-series as well, as her starring/produced show got the green light, so she's off on her own now.

"Sanctuary Pickup - SciFi has picked up the web series Sanctuary,
starring and co-produced by Amanda Tapping. As a result of this,
Tapping will move back to an occasional guest star role on
Stargate Atlantis. The initial batch of Sanctuary episodes done
for the web will be reworked and expanded to make a two hour
pilot movie opener for the series. For more on the series in its
web form, visit www.sanctuary4all.com . For an interview with
Amanda Tapping about the pickup and plans for the series, visit
gateworld.net/news/2008/02/tapping_talks_isanctuaryi_iatlan.shtml

Stargate Atlantis Gets new Boss - With Amanda Tapping committed
to Sanctuary, she will no longer be a regular on Stargate
Atlantis. Taking over as the person in charge of the Atlantis
outpost will be Richard Woolsey (Robert Picardo). Paul McGillion
will return for five episodes as Dr. Carson Beckett. Joining
the cast as a recurring character is Leela Savasta as Captain
Alice Vega, who will be commanding her own recon team. Savasta
also has a recurring role in Battlestar Galactica as Tracey Anne."

The sad thing is, the Teyla thing wouldn't bother me, if it weren't so couched in utterly sexist terms. Sigh. But, yeah, I knew it was time to let the show go when I couldn't think of anything nice to say about it anymore. And I missed the women.

When I was putting it together, I honestly wasn't sure it would work, and then it did, and I really did just sit there, going, "dude... this sucks." at it. Because, man. I should not be able to pull that kind of indictment of the treatment of female characters out of my ass in five minutes.

I was thinking the =exact= same thing: wear this as a badge at Gatecon in August. Or have as many people as possible sending this in as a flyer or a postcard to the studio, with all of them being signed "No love,"
Even if they get 50, they might take notice at some level.

I get the point your making, but using "barefoot and pregnant" for Teyla comes across wrong. If the writers had written in a pregnancy just for story purposes, then yeah. But since the storyline was written to actually accommodate the actress, not diminish the character, that's cutting off your nose to spite your face. It's hard enough for women in career fields, especially television acting, to have kids and maintain their jobs without slapping that label on her character.

[identity profile] miera-c.livejournal.com 2008-02-19 03:47 am (UTC)(link)
I don't think it comes across as wrong at all. Dozens of shows have written around the pregnancies of their actresses. They didn't have to write it into the show just because the actress was pregnant. It may have been Rachel's preference that they did it this way, but it wasn't mandatory. We don't know. But they didn't write around it, they made it her entire existence all season. I'm not saying it was badly written, but after 3 seasons of her having no function other than to be the Exotic Alien Babe (Xena Edition) with the freakish mutant DNA power, we got "barefoot and pregnant."

As I mentioned further up, I'll poke and see if I can get a good black-and-white version for printing purposes. Because color is pretty, but more expensive and less likely to copy well when you run out and need to make a Kinkos run.

Man, I go to work for one day... (actually, Torchwood killed my brain last night).

Anyway.

Teyla is pregnant, which I wouldn't mind if it weren't the worst-handled pregnancy since, since... dear god, I can't even think of one worse right now.

The baby-daddy is a random Athosian we've never met.

And, yeah, Rachel was pregnant, and they decided to work it in (not like I mind. Both Amanda Tapping and Claudia Black did it first, and Claudia actually says that if AT hadn't shown it could be done, she couldn't have).

I don't agree with the original image you liked to (that John, McKay and Ronon make the best team EVA) but I don't really agree with this, either. Obviously I'm in a different category of viewer because the female characters as a whole were never the reason I watched... or at least never the sole reason I watched. I liked Cadman and wish she was still around, but I never really connected with Kate, I don't miss Lizzie, I've enjoyed Sam this season but understand Amanda wants to branch out from the SG franchise, and I'm glad that Keller will be a regular next year. Plus Vega and Porter, although the size of their roles remain to be seen.

I also don't agree with the label of 'barefoot and pregnant'. Sometimes women DO give up their careers for family related reasons, and I don't think they should be demonized for that. Not every pregnant women is Aeryn (especially when the actress is actually pregnant).

[identity profile] miera-c.livejournal.com 2008-02-19 05:51 am (UTC)(link)

I agree that women should never be demonized for making an independent choice, although I of course hate the mere fact that we have to talk about women having to choose in the first place. But then I don't think this image demonizes Teyla or Rachel. It demonizes the writers/producers who have 1 female character remaining on the show from S3 and having managed to do almost nothing with Teyla for three years, they chose to incorporate the actress' pregnancy into the show as her only major storyline ever.

This rocks. Losing Elizabeth pretty much broke my fangirl heart. That, coupled with the way female characters have been treated in S4, is retroactively ruining my love for the 3 seasons we did get. Which sucks. Hell, I may have had my issues with how both Stargates dealt with race and gender when Wright and Cooper had the reins, but at least I wanted to watch the damn show.

Anyway, sorry, I meant for this to be a happy, puppies-and-kittens type comment in appreciation of your coolness, but apparently I'm still too pissed off.

*laughs* No worries. puppies and kittens are useful for soup, but bitching is also what this post was here for.

I think you've actually hit part of the reason I don't watch anymore on the head: it's not fun anymore. I used to look forward to it, every weekend, to count the scenes my girls had, and be gleeful, and... season four wore me down, a lot.

Thank you =)
