"My side," John whispers into the dark. Stark is curled next to him, turned away (always facing away), back bare under John's gaze. "Your side."
"Your side." The echoes of Scorpius dance through his mind as he traces the scars on Stark's skin with his eyes (he'd followed them with his fingers and mouth, earlier). Places where the man asleep next to him has been hurt in ways John is only beginning to comprehend.
The mental scars aren't visible, on either of them.
John's manifest in manicness, in syncing to a cold soldier whose only thought is genetic purity (not true anymore, Johnny-boy. She can be more, remember? In the US Army, get ahead on life...). Killing before he is killed (before they are killed, get it right.)
"Killing in the name of..." Yeah. Right.
Stark shifts, a soft sound escaping him. It's not a whimper.
Placing his hand on Stark's shoulder, John murmurs, "Our side."
The sound stops, and the muscles under his hand tense once, then relax.
