Quick Anders meta before work
This is speculation based on spoilers...
There's a rumor flying around that Sam's going to become a pilot.
And as much as it makes me laugh, it also makes a kind of sense, for him. We've always known one big thing about him: the cylons take away what he has and he fights back.
Caprica nuked? Sam gathered a bunch of people and did crappily, but still smacked at those occupying his planet.
Wife taken? He's part of the people running the resistance, sending suicide bombers off.
Wife dead? The only thing he can do that might give him a physical confrontation of any sort with the cylons is fly a viper. Marines are useless when there's no ground war going on.
So, yeah. There's a scary sort of sense in Sam becoming a viper pilot. If, y'know, he'd fit in the cockpit. (too tall, Sam. Too tall!)

Viper would be more symbolic, of course, which is why you're right, it does make a certain amount of sense. And if Kara's any example, mad Pyramid skillz = viper jock skillz.
But. hm. I like politician!Sam MUCH more. But a Pilot!Sam AU, all determined to get closer to Kara by doing her job, could be fun.

Well, I get the impression part of it is that, as a pyramid player, you need a good ability to 'know' where everyone on the court is, at any given time. And good hand-eye coordination. BOTH of those translate really really well, I'd expect, to vipers. With the added part of it being an unlevel playing field, though.
*pauses* Can I have Jean in a viper? Then she and Racetrack can snark madly at each other, with Seelix mocking both of them.
That AU is known as Starcrossed and Sam's a woman. *mutters* Carter JUST MAKES IT under the height restriction, I would think, at 5'10". Anders is just too damned TALL.
Even though I'm now kinda wondering if I should do post-Maelstrom fic with Kara popping back up and mocking Sam for his flight ability.

Jean in a viper would be cool. I hope we get to see Seelix in hers eventually.
Sam gets head!Kara? hee. She can mock him for getting drunk and falling off the viper too. Because he's gotta feel stupid about that.

I always wondered if Sharon was too small to be in a Viper, but then Kat was petite as well, wasn't she? I imagine you have to be a certain weight to handle the Viper.

A certain weight, height, and muscle-denseness, probably. Not, of course, that we know what those standards are. sigh. And I suspect Sharon and Racetrack prefer raptors to vipers, but I'd think both required a certain amount of strength.

Of course, it's still amusing how short Bamber is in comparison... I can imagine Lee trying to give orders, and then Anders and Helo playing keep away with his flight helmet.
And Helo and Sam as pilot and ECO would be amazing, so long as Athena and Starbuck can sit by and mock them mercilessly.
