Meta: Domino/Nathan Dayspring
This is... not really coherent, or rather, not very in-depth. I am feeling shallow and rushed. And have a gold-plated iron to play Monopoly with. Also, I frosted the cookies PURPLE.
Er. Anyway.
ETA: goddamn lj ate me typing my cut tag. *kicks it a lot*
Ah. Nate and Domino.
When I first contemplated this meta, Switchfoot's "Dare You to Move" started playing. Which made me laugh and almost fall out of my chair with the apropriateness. Because DYtM? Is Nate and Dom, writ large. Life keeps screwing them over, knocking them down, and they tell each other to get back up. Though, not always in so many words.
In some ways, they're the most compatible people in the entire Marvel pantheon. They've had their lives screwed by their parents, they've got cults associated with their families, and their mothers love their siblings more. And said siblings could cause the end of the world.
When they first meet, Domino's a mercenary, Nate's a mercenary. At this point in their respective histories, Dom really doens't know exactly how screwed-up she is, but she has no memories of her childhood. Nate, otoh, would love to forget large portions of his life at this point: he led a successful uprising against Poccy with his pseudo-parents only to have them ripped away. Then the person who ended up in charge razed the land, killing tens of thousands--eventually, including Nate's wife. And then his rival stole his son, too. Nate was raised believing he was the Last Best Hope of humanity for defeating Poccy, and he takes that as his mission.
He goes back into the past, trying to stop him at various points in history, and settles on the late 20th century as the nexus point where it can happen for certain.
So he sets up shop, and also runs around as a mercenary with a small group that eventually gets targeted by an arms dealer named Tolliver--of course, while he's running around, the bright, young, sarcastic Domino gets under his skin. It's pure speculation, but the assumption is that they started sleeping together during this time.
Nate probably had guilt about her age. Dom had no shame.
And then he blew them all up in the Yucatan.
They go their separate ways (duh).
Nate runs off to... The future, I think. And to form X-Force, eventually (since he thinks training soldiers will help in the coming war against Poccy).
Domino ends up in the NSA, guarding a very special man.
And Milo Thurman decides he likes her, decides he might love her, and proposes. Domino, for her part, seems to want to make a go at the whole 'life' idea, and marries him. I imagine there was quite a strain on their marriage, if only because he was being held in an NSA facility for his own good.
Probably, it, and the fact that Milo was a nice, fairly uncomplicated guy (whereas Nate? Not so much with the simple) contributed to Dom's decision to fake her own death to end the marriage.
Yes. She faked her own death to get out of marriage to Milo. And one assumes (since she later tried to save his life) that she did actually love him.
...and, I Promise You Walls comes on. HAHAHAH. (who says we die before we live/I promise you walls/of grace)
Domino faked her own death and then ended up captured by Tolliver and chained to a wall for a year. Not joking.
Meanwhile, Vanessa, a shapeshifter, became Domino. And when Nate contacted her to help him out with the New Mutants, and starting X-Force she joined him. It's again speculation, but we all assume that during that year, Vanessa and Nate were sleeping together.
Crap happened. Nate died a few times.
And then they unchained Dom from the wall, he died again, and she... went off the be a mercenary again.
When he came back, he called her up and dragged her back to help with the kids. It's arguable that helping with the kids helped her, really. I think it did. And she and Nate had a rocky relationship that eventually resolved into about where they'd been before--she'd back him up, he'd back her up... And then the world ended.
Or the world was going to end, and they confessed 'feelings' sort of, and then the world didn't end, and it was all awkward again. 'Cause. FEELINGS, man. Plus, kissing.
Really pretty kissing.
Unfortunately, the world didn't end, and Nate and Dom were left to face the fact that they were dorks who might care too much.
But then Tyler died, and Nate had to have someone to talk to about it--Dom elected herself, and at least got him to talk (as much as he would) while in the midst of a gun battle. In a factory. And then the sewer (he takes her to the nicest places).
And things were... not bad, for them. Sadly, I stopped reading the books (oh, Onslut was BAD)
I've heard enough to know that Nate went back on his Path Against Poccy a lot and got too wrapped up and Dom finally had enough and they split. It's sad, but they did.
And so they spent time apart, doing other things.
Then Poccy was dead.
Somewhere in here, Dom finally found out about her past--she was an experiment and her mother was a psycho (DOM SHOT HER MOTHER), and her brother was, like, the second coming. Except not. And Dom left Laz to be watched by the same priests who raised her, and, um... her mom maybe killed him (Brian Stelfreeze is a verybad awesome man). And she'd asked Nate for help and he said he was busy.
And then Nate went on a bender after a little girl died on his watch (a six-month one), and Dom called him and they... got shafted by really bad writing (seriously. The Underground arc in Weapon X had PROMISE and then it went "boink" and had none.). They went their separate ways.
Then Nate took over the world, then gave it back.
So Dom was hired to be part of the team that took him down, only, well, she didn't know what to think and watched him happily work both sides to take over a small country. Of course, then Nate decided he wasn't going to shoot the dictator, and Dom, well... Followed her conscience.
Yes. She has one.
And then she told Nate that she had didn't really have faith in his ability to keep things from getting fucked up -- especially the big things. And it made him cry and she walked away.
So Nate broke a desk and decided that, well, he really needed Domino.
And here's where it gets even messier.
Nathan Christopher Charles Summers Dayspring Askani'Son, used his tactical powers for, well, evil. He manipulated events to bring Domino back inot his life. And this time, she was firmly on his side.
So much so, that there was kissing again.
And now she's staying onGreymalkin Providence.
I expect this to explode, soon. I expect it to be bad and messy, and VERY VERY good. Because Fabian Nicieza is a god.
And Nicole is the best editor EVER.
And in the last issue, there WERE HEARTS. OMG WTF. HEARTS.
And that, is my Nate and Dom meta. It's not very deep. Sorry.
Er. Anyway.
