Pull Back the Curtains

"He's dead, you know." Leoben sounds conversational as he cuts the meat neatly. He's learned not to give her a knife now, of course. Two deaths between them, now.

Kara grabs the fork and takes a bite without showing interest. She has a sense that she should ask who is dead. But showing interest means giving him something. And Kara's through giving Leoben a gods-damned thing. Last time, it was his soul. This time, he wants hers.

"I'm still surprised, you know. The might Starbuck, married." His derision is thick, "Living in a mud-coated tent. What was next, Kara, happy little brats to dandle on your knee?"

When she doesn't answer, he cuts his own food and eats in silence for several minutes. Then he grins at her, "Sam Anders is dead, Kara. And you don't even care."

"Should I?"

"Rumor has it you were married. And I saw your matching tattoos." He peers at her sleeve-covered left arm. "If we had the time, I'd have it removed. Save you the bother from having it done later on."

Dead. The word pounds into her skull in time to her heartbeat. Others join it. Sam is dead.. It would have been so easy, for Leoben, for any of them. Sam had been sick, weak and all alone. Kara hadn't even made it back to their tent before Leoben had appeared and simply stole her away.

She remembers Tyrol calling for her while the centurions marched her into the cargo hold of Colonial One. She'd been tied and left in a disused corner while other things went on.

And now she is here, listening as Leoben tells her the man she loves is dead. Sam... "You're lying."

Something satisfied flickers across his expression, and then he smiles. "Am I, Kara?"

"Yeah."

He stands and saunters over to her, bending down to look in her eyes, "You don't believe that. Everything you've experienced in life leads you to believe that fate can be this cruel. It would be so easy for us to crush one man and have no outcry against it."

"Maybe." Kara stands, sudden rage filling her. "And maybe you're just a lying piece of shit." The fork in her hands almost isn't strong enough to pierce skin, but she manages, digging it into the side of Leoben's neck while he gapes at her.

When he falls, she kicks him, then turns away, not wanting to watch.

A hand closes on her ankle, and she swears and grabs her chair, turning and swinging it down to smash Leoben's skull in.

The hand lets her go, the body twitches once, twice, then simply stops.

He's dead. A shiver of relief flies through her. Again. This time, she isn't praying for his soul.

Instead, she'll pray to the Gods that he's lying.

Because if Sam Anders is dead, then her only hope of escape is gone. And she doesn't think she can handle that.

Sam who survived Caprica without her, who promised to love and cherish her forever, will tear the place apart to find her. She holds onto that while she cleans her hands and backs away from the table. She's not hungry anymore.
