lyssie: (Who are we again?)

So, I've been thinking about this...

Red Dwarf has canonically covered a bunch of fanfic cliches.

1. Mpreg.
2. Bodyswapping.
3. Genderswapping.
4. AU.
5. Meeting AU version of self and having sex with said self.
6. Time travel.
7. Time traveling backwards.
8. Unexpected marriage.
9. Mood/personality alterations leaving said sufferer changed... And liking quiche.
10. Alternate of obnoxious character shows up and is cool and suave. And calls people Skipper
11. Finding True Love, losing it, and getting it back... albeit from a different dimension.
12. Life forms genetically engineered to provide pleasure. (suddenly, I have Vila saying, "Let's hope they've all got good legs" in my head)
13. Becoming your own father.
14. Killing Kennedy.
15. Creating a copy of yourself.
16. Playing pool with planets. Ok, that's not really a fic cliche, but it is damned cool. Why don't more people play pool with planets?
17. Simulant androids that kill (they like ripping off your head and spitting down your throat).
18. Silicon Heaven. (c'mon, BSG should be all over that)
19. Nanobots which heal, recreating limbs and complete spacecraft and crew.

And etc.

So, er, why don't more people remember this show? Or was the obnoxiousness too much? (seriously, the Farscape fans should be all over Red Dwarf, as it's Farscape's step-uncle what slept with its mum at one point and then scared Farscape with its tales of gelfs and simulants...)

Also, if someone writes me Rod meets Ace fic, I will be highly amused.

Rod meets Ace fic, I will be highly amused.

Who's that? Because once, Keith sketched me out a verbal fic where Ace wreaked havoc on the RD crew and had sex with the other Ace.

[identity profile] wishfulaces.livejournal.com 2006-09-11 01:44 am (UTC)(link)
Is it really not that well known? Maybe it wasn't as pushed in the States as other shows? (I only found it by accident on PBS.)

Rod was the Ace Rimmer version of Rodney McKay from Stargate: Atlantis.

Oooh. Go Ace!

I'm thinking it's the latter. Which is sad, as it's not as bad as many many things people love. 'Cause, yes. PBS. Which most cable-kids these days don't even watch.

My rant may be obnoxious, but never Red Dwarf

[identity profile] theta-g.livejournal.com 2006-09-11 01:53 am (UTC)(link)
Red Dwarf forgotten? Who can forget it? Damn thing was so joyful & true I simply watched it too much. You get sick of conducting or attending showings, is all. I put up with it on DVD because I had the commentaries on, and it turned out to be pure pleasure again.

The only problem with Red Dwarf is that the team have wasted years on a failed dream to reboot the continuity with some dumbass film. What's staring them in the face is the true destiny of the series: finish the story on TV, get Lister to Fiji and call it done. And even then, it won't be forgotten.

Kryten vs Crichton, yo.

I only saw a few episodes and I only saw THOSE when I was near Wisconsin Public Television. (WTTW = SUCKY.) Man, I miss Wisconsin Public Television and Iowa Public Television. SIGH.

[identity profile] wishfulaces.livejournal.com 2006-09-11 02:41 am (UTC)(link)
Which most cable-kids these days don't even watch.

Which is *really* sad because it has had and still has some fantastic programming on it. I don't know what I would have watched as a kid if not for PBS.

[identity profile] wishfulaces.livejournal.com 2006-09-11 02:43 am (UTC)(link)
Yeah, I had to find RD through a South Bend PBS because neither WTTW or the other, um, *two* PBS stations I could get regularly showed it. No, wait, Gary PBS did start showing it eventually I think.

Red Dwarf was one of my first favourite shows - ever. I watched it from age 8 onwards (Big Bro got me into it).

It's what led me, I believe, to the Sci-fi genre.

I love it. I just never thought of writing fic for it. How can you top insanity? (brain goes straight to a certain scene with the alien undies crushing Lister, while Kryten tries to help...).

Really - they covered everything themselves (see list) - what more could you need? *goes to watch more Red Dwarf*

Fiji? Oh no, not anymore, my friend. It's now known as Fuju

*g*

Aww, Red Dwarf was just awesome. "Smoke me a kipper, I'll be back for breakfast."

I have fond memories of it on, late nights on BBC 2.

Bro's friend has pirated Asian copies apparently, and that's reminded me that I was planning on looking for downloads for it.

Yeah. I keep hearing the movie thing and rolling my eyes.

Argh. Now I want to watch season eight again. And you're right, though. Watching it too much gets annoying, but having a break of time really helps.

BWAHAHAHAHAH. John would... probably do as Lister did and tell Kryten He Could Be More.

*nod* I totally didn't get much good sci fi on WTTW. *pouts*

That was one of the reasons I ADORED going to Iowa was because by the time we got there on Friday, it was Skiffy Friday on PBS. Dr. Who! Red Dwarf! LOVE!

[identity profile] lilacsigil.livejournal.com 2006-09-11 05:05 am (UTC)(link)
I really don't know why there's not more. Maybe because angst is easy, comedy is hard? Because it had some really bad seasons later on?

But I would love to see a Cylon ask "But where do all the calculators go?"

[identity profile] skellingtonjon.livejournal.com 2006-09-11 07:38 am (UTC)(link)
Red Dwarf was great.

But if they ever do bring it back, it'll probably be on BBC3, which I can't get.

*cries*

[identity profile] wishfulaces.livejournal.com 2006-09-11 12:05 pm (UTC)(link)
Oh, I know! Iowa was awesome! Only I always seemed to be in the state on the wrong day(s) to watch the good stuff.

[identity profile] kwayera.livejournal.com 2006-09-11 12:06 pm (UTC)(link)
RED DWARF.

IS AWESOME.

[identity profile] mrv3000.livejournal.com 2006-09-11 02:09 pm (UTC)(link)
I *so* need to watch Red Dwarf again. It's been years.

*youtubes red dwarf*

And then be OTP forever, since apparently that line means deep, deep love?

Tell me about it. Was a wee bit late to work this morning. *ahem*

[identity profile] elvinborn.livejournal.com 2006-09-12 01:46 am (UTC)(link)

S'true. I've never understood the movie fixtation they've got.
