ficlets: new BSG, season one

Bored at work, used the thingie to make fic prompts.

Prompts: Kara, Baltar; Poetry, Humor

"Why, Doctor, is this love?"

Gaius tried to ignore Starbuck's mocking tone, but it wasn't easy. He wanted to tell her he wasn't normally like this, that he was suave, cool, efficient when it came to women. But everything he said to her came out wrong, garbled. And the mockery in her eyes just got worse and worse.

The crumpled sheet of paper he'd actually written something heart-felt on landed in front of him. "Lieutenant Thrace, I--"

"You're lucky, Doc. I could've pasted it up on the pilot's message board for all to mock."

"Really, Gaius. It was pathetic, even for a human," Six whispered in his ear. "Maybe next time, you should try a love-song, or kneeling."

"Yes, well, I could have done better, I suppose." Really, was it too much to ask that a sensitive soul like his be allowed to thrive? Being constantly heckled was ruining him, turning him into a desperate, clinging man. It was truly ridiculous. Much like his poetry.

"Really? You certainly couldn't have done worse." A snicker escaped Starbuck.

"She's right. I suppose, in the end, Gaius, you're just a man," stepping away from him, Six brushed against Starbuck. "She's more man than you, of course."

"I simply thought it would be nice." Dignity, really, at all costs. Even when the cylon in your head was casually groping the woman you'd like on her back. Gaius swallowed, "I think I should go. Yes."

"You do that, Doc." Starbuck smirked and turned to go, stopping for a moment, almost as if she felt Six's hands, "And, Doc? Next one goes up on the notice board. Maybe I'll even have Dualla read it aloud to entertain the troops."

"Really, Gaius, I despair of you." Smirking, Six sauntered out after Starbuck.

Gaius stared after them both, then shook his head and turned back to the cylon detector. There were better things he could focus his mind on. The paper she'd crumpled was absently knocked from the desk when he stood a few moments later. He didn't notice it.

Dad, Cottle, pre-series, gossip

"You know what they say about her."

"I know."

Cottle sucked in a lungful of cigarette smoke and held it in, then released it in a jet of smoke. "About the same things they say about us."

The man across from him didn't shrug. Commander Adama didn't shrug. That would be like the the Titania hitting an asteroid. Impossible. But there was something that indicated he might have shrugged at Cottle's statement. "I don't listen to what people say."

"I know that, and you know that," Cottle harrumphed. He was getting into being the old, cranky doctor thing. It was something they'd told him never to be in medical school. Always be accessible to your patients. And care, of course. "You gonna tell her?"

"Tell her what? That the gossips are flappin' their frakking mouths?" Now the commander looked amused.

"And you don't care about what they say, you're just gonna bring her on your ship." Maybe Cottle was a little bit concerned about his patients. Maybe.

"It's my ship. Do you think I'd let her on board if I thought that?" As if that solved everything.

"Yeah." Cottle sucked in another mouthful of smoke, didn't qualify his statement, then snorted. "We're gettin' too old for this."

The commander might possibly have raised an eyebrow, "I thought you were only as old as you feel?"

"That's complete shit and you know it."

Again, the commander of the Galactica does not shrug. But Adama might have been attempting to. "I only feel old when you remind me."

"Thanks. Now get your ass out of my infirmary. I've got paperwork to file."

End of conversation. Abrupt. Adama liked him for that. Cottle watched him disappear and shook his head. Maybe he was right, maybe he wasn't. Kara Thrace would have to show them.

Excellent ficlets. I especially like the one with Kara and Gaius. She's so snarky and he's so flustered, yet annoyed at himself, and Six in his head is just adding to his discomfort!

The one with Doc Cottle and Adama was also fun. I love Cottle's PoV -- well done!

Thank you! I was, ah, disturbed at the idea of Gaius and poetry, but then it seemed to work and, well, sarcastic Kara is never a bad thing.

I adore Cottle, I just don't get ideas for writing him all that often, arg.
