I think an unqualified "Wow" is usually positive. It means at the very least that you've made an impression, which is usually a desirable thing with a story, so you'd have to add something to make it negative. I figure it's probably loosely equivalent to "cool."

But that could just be me. I think I've left "Oh, wow" sometimes when I was feeling especially inarticulate.
