instead of saying it in the 30+ places it's been mentioned...

No.

I don't think the 'oppression joke' is funny.

It wasn't funny to begin with, and it's even less funny now.

I hate Kara/Lee.

But you know what? I don't go around telling people every fucking chance I get (Yep. I have it in my user info. Not the same thing).

I like reading your journals and commentary. However, I don't like continually getting slapped in the face for speaking out about my dislike for your fucking ship.

eta: as requested.

Kara/Lee = oppression of the people who don't like the ship.

It began after a rather whiny commentary by myself (and one or two others) elsewhere about the fact that 90% of the fic out there is Kara/Lee, 90% of the rec'd fic is Kara/Lee, and 90% of the commentary is Kara/Lee.

I honestly don't even know if it's being directed at me, but as I AM one of those people who doesn't like it, it certainly feels like it is.

eta2: yup. Being directed at me. *bows* I've gotta tell you, it's very strange to be on this side of the shipper divide. I kinda feel like a Daniel/Jack shipper.

Can you please tell me what the oppression joke even IS? Because I've been getting the last dregs of it at [livejournal.com profile] meyerlemon's journal, and I have no idea what's going on, and I feel OUT OF THE LOOP.

[identity profile] saramund.livejournal.com 2005-10-05 04:03 am (UTC)(link)
....*reads post*

I'm missing something, aren't I?

However, whatever it is I'm missing - being slapped in the face for being open about not liking a ship is never nice.

Polite discussion of pluses/minues of said ship are fine. Being told you're a fucktard (paraphrase guesswork there - plus, I always wanted to type that word... it's not as naughty as I thought it would be) is just downright mean.

Would you like some chocolate? I have lots now.

Oh, geeze, you're the source of that? I gotta say, there's a huge difference between mocking someone occasionally and in conversation with them (which is just friendly riding), and doing it often and with other people (which is really pretty derogatory). That... really changes my perception of what's going on there.

fandom scary!

[identity profile] bantha-fodder.livejournal.com 2005-10-05 04:20 am (UTC)(link)
The oppression joke never would have started if you hadn't whined about how all the Kara/Lee shippers were blatantly ignoring you if you wrote something that wasn't Kara/Lee, and then that where you implied there was a conspiracy going on? That was great, really.

[identity profile] sideofzen.livejournal.com 2005-10-05 04:21 am (UTC)(link)
It started in a post of [livejournal.com profile] bantha_fodder's a week ago because someone had complained about the fic recs she gives in [livejournal.com profile] galacticanews were heavily K/L.

And that just kind of spawned all this passive-aggressive wankage.

[identity profile] bantha-fodder.livejournal.com 2005-10-05 04:21 am (UTC)(link)
I get super bitchy about it here (http://www.livejournal.com/users/bantha_fodder/59931.html).

Your post is very cool and well-written, yay. I am really not in the BSG fandom, but I can totally see parallels in all other fandoms. It is sad that there was flailing and wank as a result.

that's not what i said at all! you totally have a right to your opinion, and a right to voice that opinion. but you said you were being blatantly ignored and wah wah wah, and OF COURSE there was going to be wank coming from that. what did you expect? same as after i ranted about it, i knew that wank would come. but i felt that strongly about it that i wanted to bitch and moan.

and then i did something about it. so, good on you for voicing your opinion, but don't be surprised when something comes about after it.

i didn't mean for this post to sound as condescending as it does.

All this talk of slapping is getting me all . . ahem.

[identity profile] redstarrobot.livejournal.com 2005-10-05 05:24 am (UTC)(link)
I don't know a lot about this one, so, okay. It's just, generally, it doesn't become not personal because the names don't get mentioned or get left behind in the origins. If anything, it gets more personal, because it means the target can see it but can't really say "look, if you have a problem with me, we can, you know, work this out..." without being kind of turned away, being told that it's just generic while whatever's getting to them continues. I'd always assumed the oppression thing was at the expense of some wotsername (Telkena?) sort who threw a major wobbly about her feedback after a history of mockable behavior, because it looked like someone was getting ridden hard about something really stupid they'd done that they'd never be allowed to live down, so I was really surprised by this post. But, like I said, this is the first clue I've gotten as to where that joke really came from, so I don't really know what started any of this - for all I know, it's an even older in-joke and this is just unfortunate crossfire and the unfortunate timing of tempers running high.

[identity profile] mollymoon.livejournal.com 2005-10-05 05:34 am (UTC)(link)
Rabid shipping is always annoying, regardless of fandom or ship. I left the HP fandom this summer after the two main ships, H/Hr and R/Hr, went insane in the most bitter fashion.

It's like the female version of being a football fan. You can't explain the obsession to anyone, but its something that can drive you to wearing stupid clothes, vehement cursing and face painting.

And as we all know, face painting is the source of all evil.

In short, extremism in any hobby is annoying and a waste of time.

[identity profile] ysrith.livejournal.com 2005-10-05 08:23 am (UTC)(link)
You too? It is getting a little tedious isn't it. And to be honest so far when I have seen it on a fic it's turned me off.

But then again what would I know, as my whole purpose in BSG fandom is to stalk people and say horrible things about them.

So, your Lee/Darla? How's that going?

Sorry, Pen. I like you, but this oppression thing is seriously getting on my nerves too.

Not to rain on the parade . . .

[identity profile] mitai.livejournal.com 2005-10-05 12:32 pm (UTC)(link)
. . . but maybe a lot of people are getting turned off to pairings fic because, well, the vast, overwhelming majority is really, really bad. I mean, unreadably bad. It doesn't matter if it's Snape/Harry/Hermione or Kara/Lee. A lot of people who are just bad writers sit around having fantasies about characters on TV and feel like writing their fantasy and putting it out on the net so other people, who don't know the difference between good fic and bad fic (they're out there, unbelievably) will feedback them.

I have friends on my flist across a wide, wide variety of fandoms, and this issue is cropping up more and more. Pairings fic is almost unilaterally bad. No one is oppressing anyone, but the good writers who are interested in more than UST! are feeling left out and overwhelmed because such undeserving fic, in their minds, is getting tons of attention.

In conclusion - write the fic you want to read. Others will read it (eventually), see that it is Good, and want to emulate you. This process can take a LONG TIME. Until then, infighting is going to get you zilch besides fandom_wanked.

[identity profile] thekatebeyond.livejournal.com 2005-10-05 02:09 pm (UTC)(link)
Apollo frowns on infighting in the fleet. He wants us all to stop it RIGHT NOW.

*pets* Poor Lyssie. It's no fun being at the center of controversy. Personally, I've missed all the controversy (as I tend to do - I'm amazingly blind like that), but I'm sorry it's stressing you.

I lean Kara/Lee, and but that doesn't stop me from exploring other potential 'ships, you know? And always being respectful of other people's ships. (Unless they want to argue that Jack/Sam isn't canon. Then it gets ugly.)

But I kinda *like* Jack Daniels! Oh, wait. That's not what you're talking about.

Meh. It wasn't all you, Lyssie. I contributed to it, too, but I got over it, 'cause I have the attention span of a 3 year old. And now, I'm just reading what appeals to me, ship or not, and writing what appeals to me, ship or not.

After all, I'm firmly Helo/Sharon, shipwise, and yet I'm still writing a Helo/Racetrack, and a Helo/Kara, and an Apollo/Sharon, and a Kara/Leoben, and... Well, you get the picture. ;)

And here, have a Kara.

Re: Not to rain on the parade . . .

[identity profile] lyssie.livejournal.com 2005-10-05 02:48 pm (UTC)(link)
Actually, (in lj, at least) the pairings fic tends to be very good. It's well-constructed, in character, tightly-detailed, etc. The problem I've been having is that 90% of the good stuff being written is one pairing, the one everyone glommed onto back in the beginning of the show.

My problem is that I tend to whine (not unlike DarkMark, although he wasn't whiny) about this disparity, and wish for more people to write other things. I was also whining that I wouldn't get a lot of feedback if I wrote non-standard stuff. As, unlike DM, I don't have the clout to write a Buffy/Supergirl crossover for the express purpose of getting feedback and getting that feedback in spades.

[identity profile] lyssie.livejournal.com 2005-10-05 03:02 pm (UTC)(link)
I suppose in a way the problem (for me) is that it's basically a joke at my expense.

Yep. I whined. I knew it at the time, and I knew it afterwards. And sadly, I can't go back and say, "Pardon me, that's my egg on my face, can you all forget about it?" Mostly because it's been said already, and there's no point in trying to unsay something.

However, I do have a new mission in life: to scour lj for fic and make a list to spam people with.

And, dude! I have the window open with your porn (damn you, work, where I can not read porn, even when I see it cross my flist!). Hopefully, I will have time to finish reading it (you realize taking a man's alcohol away is a bad idea? Of course, she can kick HIS ass...)
