....wtf?

Dude. Someone explain to me how Dr. Weir is maternal!

Please!

Because the Lizzie in my head just demanded a bottle of tequila and a six-pack of limes.

Because she has to supervise a bunch of people who act like five year olds, which involves a lot of mother-ish lecturing? *shrugs* I don't have the coherency to explain at the moment, but I can sort of see why someone would say that.

She's that ooey gooey type of chick that's soft about The Peoples of the World, but when it comes to real kidlings, not so much. Prolly uses little baby shoes as paper clip holders or something.

God, that's such a twisted idea. And wait, Kara's secretly got a horde of baby shoes tucked away in her apartment, next to the spare ramen and her paints!

All women secretly dream of having children so that they have some meaning and purpose to their lives instead of worrying about dying alone.
Lizzie is a woman.
Lizzie is therefore deeply maternal.

There's also a school of thought which states that Lizzie is such a good leader because she has so far been unable to use her female parts to experience the miracle of birth and therefore mothers the whole of Atlantis, but we try to ignore them.

Well, she's great mother-like as she's in charge of all those wily Earthlings and the mission?

Or are you meaning "how is it that fic writers give her BABIES?!"

It probably ties into the fugly dress from last week. ;)

*runs*

Hmmmmmmmmmm. Don't particularly see that, other than she does care deeply about people, she's not military, and she has ovaries. Presumably.

After seeing Teyla with Ronon, I am so much more a Weir/Shepperd fangirl.

Tequila, limes, and salt. Now, damn it!

Your mother had power, she was a woman, thus a woman in power is like yer ma'.

...wait, did I just call The List freudian?

Heh.

She is the den-motherish "Do not make me turn this expedition around or I will knock your silly little heads together, I swear to God!" kind of maternal. She would not bake you cookies. I bet she *can't* bake you cookies.

[identity profile] rosewildeirish.livejournal.com 2005-08-01 08:51 pm (UTC)(link)
...you can't be both? I'll have to break that to my (married) friends a few cities over. No more good times for them. :-/

"Do not make me turn this expedition around or I will knock your silly little heads together, I swear to God!"

Dear Lord that makes for some funny mental images.

[identity profile] ianmcin.livejournal.com 2005-08-01 09:19 pm (UTC)(link)
I am now imagining Dr. Weir trading places with Lois from Malcom in the Middle.

To be a good leader of such a diverse group of people, you need to be in possession of some parental like skills. Describing her as maternal may be a result of real acknowledgement of that, but I'm guessing its more to do with the fact that our society associates female leadership with maternal qualities.

Though an equal arguement could be made that any good male leader has paternal qualities. Look at the dynamics within Band of Brothers as an example.

Another train of thought could say that the only other type of leader they have on Atlantis is the BuddyLeader in John. But from my own experience in the work place, while a BuddyLeader is more fun, they don't equate to productivity. A BuddyLeader may instill a stronger sense of community, but a parental leader is needed to make things run smoothly.

So the combo of the two types of leadership personalities is really what's keeping Atlantis afloat, pardon the pun.

Zomg. "Lizzeh, Rodneh got his hand stuck in a jar again, can you help - Lizzeh? Er... What are you doing?" "Drinking, John. Now close the door, take off your pants, and get on the bed." "..." "NOW, dammit!" "Eeek."

Now that's the kind of mental image I like...

She is a woman and therefore MUST want to MOTHER EVERYONE OMG.

*facedesk*

*spoilers for intruder*

[identity profile] mylittleredgirl.livejournal.com 2005-08-02 06:10 am (UTC)(link)
Er... not maternal as in "omg babies!", but I think she has a maternal instinct towards the people she commands (like Janeway, but LESS CRAZY). I mean, I'm all about the Shep/Weir sexx0rz, but I feel like there was more maternal care about the way she treated him in "Intruder" than omfg I must keep you around for you are my lovarrr care. I'm not talking about what she said to the boys back home so much as the fact that she didn't tell him about it. She cares about him and wants to encourage his development, and there was a flash of mommy-ish pride. I see her as a mama bear to the others sometimes.

However, that particular works just as well if she's behaving like a Supportive Wife than a Supportive Mother, so I suppose it isn't that strong.

I really don't see the baby-making vibe from Elizabeth all that much. Which... actually makes it very strange that I like her so much as a character -- not because "all women should make babies!" but because I traditionally only identify with those who have a strongly apparent maternal instinct.

It's very late and I am sick. Plz not to yell at me, kthnx.
