spoilers have fucked us over
I mean, really. I was flipping through posts on a community, and someone was talking about the death of a character they'd liked, and they said, "I was so upset about X dying, I didn't know it was going to happen."
...NO SHIT, SHERLOCK.
That's what's SUPPOSED TO HAPPEN.
You're not supposed to know people are going to die, or how the season is going to end, or any of that, or it ruins the fucking drama!

However, in a couple fandoms recently I've watched unspoiled character death (namely: NCIS, omfgwtf) and been just so shellshocked that (a) character x died and (b) I hadn't gotten spoiled on it. It was an oddball experience.
Also, I was raised on the Xena and the X-Files -- main characters DIE ALL THE FUCKIN TIME on those shows and continually come back to life so I have this odd "omg, but they're *not* dead" psychosis.
Which is why there is a *lot* of N/T ghost and/or angel fic, I think. AHAH.
ps. ::randomly loves on lys::

I think it's a sign that you've been watching too much Stargate when there's character death in other shows, and a part of you is saying "hey, a bullet between the eyes doesn't necessarily mean they're not coming back."

Unless you're a Joss Whedon fan, in which case it should be taken for granted that, hello, characters you love have a really good chance of kicking the bucket.
And they're still SURPRISED EVERY TIME, in a "OMG Joss dared to kill someone" way. I'm not sure whether or not to cry.
