that day... in my life...

So, I have pinpointed part of why I keep blocking on the SJ ficathon entry. Because I've been ranting about badfic, and I know I'm just as guilty of some of the crappy cliches as the people I rant about. And unconsciously, it means my brain doesn't want to write Sam/Jack, because then I'm writing my own self-absorbed, cliche-ridden fantasy romance.

Also, it might be because my underwire is broken and poking me. Ow.

Applied for jobs. Saw a job I'd previously interviewed for listed again. Nice of the guy to send me a letter/telephone call of rejection.

Have called the number Kris gave me and left messages. Never had a call back.

It's great for my ego, this whole lack of interest in hiring me. It can be over now, thanks.

Was organizing my comics into a list. I'm beginning to wonder if I should just sell my whole run of Excalibur. Gordon sent me scans, so it's not like I won't have them. Hrm.

*laughs* I've been exceedingly good and not read ANY of them.

sigh.

[identity profile] lyssie.livejournal.com 2005-06-17 05:25 pm (UTC)(link)
*whaps* That was not a dodge, silly. That was "I'm not allowed to read them until I post mine, and I've had a hard time not reading some of them, and I hate that you've finished yours and jealous of everyone else!" plus a few foot-stomps thrown in and an adorable pout borrowed from Carter.

But in less sentences and words.

[identity profile] nakedtoes.livejournal.com 2005-06-17 05:26 pm (UTC)(link)
It's not whether or not you use cliches (every plot bunny is a cliche now, it's official), it's the way you write them. I like the way you write them, lots of people like the way you write them, so fret not. (Or fret less if that seems more realistic)

They're idiots, sweeties. *snuggles and offers chocolate* Actually, I have lots of chocolate (though less than I did a week ago) and I'm sending stuff to the States anyway: this is a genuine offer. *waves it enticingly before you*

Also, I find the Emma Townshend album very weird (which is probably a nice way of putting it); I think I need to listen to it more. Possibly lots more.

Meep. Thank you. I do (generally) remember this. It's just a weird mental block that's being smashed away (plus, my fingers are cold).

Mreep. UK chocolate. If I bounce up and down and squeal loudly, maybe you can even hear my glee Er. Yes, please? *is pathetic*

I knew there was an 'h' in her name! And, yes. It's weird, because I didn't think I liked it and then I had it on my playlist with a bunch of stuff (like, er, now. sigh), and I realized I was listening to it lots and did like it. Hole's second album was difficult like that, I couldn't get into it until I'd listened to it a bunch of times at work and then was like, "dude. This IS a good album." (I suspect Garbage's Bleed Like Me is going to be like that, too, because I really wasn't impressed with it, but I do, also, go through weird musical phases, so it could just be that, too. Like, right now? I can't stand Depeche Mode. And I LOVE them.)

but the difference is you know they're cliches and you make them your bitch. Unlike other people who think it's somehow ORIGINAL to have Sam and Jack find twu wuv and repopulate the galaxy.

[identity profile] nakedtoes.livejournal.com 2005-06-17 05:41 pm (UTC)(link)
No, I understand. I feel like everything I write either has Sam getting drunk in a bar (which is horribly OOC b/c of the naquadah) or someone making coffee, followed by Sam curled up into the couch. It's rather distressing.

Oops, I was also supposed to be sending chocolate to [profile] shipper_mel. Hrm, I really need to be organised. If you email me your address, I'll try and get it out sometime soon(ish)?

Yup, I'm sure I'll turn it on in a year's time and shout "But this is the greatest", but at the moment I'm stuck on my initial 'It's Alanis Morissette w dodgy piano' impression. I adore the title track of 'Bleed like me'. The rest, not so much - it just doesn't seem particularly new.

Was there some canon reference that she can't get drunk because of the naquadah?

Yeah, but the Cross-Time Caper and the Girls School From Heck! series in there are priceless.

Yes, hi, I started picking up X-Men Classic reprints of the Dark Phoenix Saga and Kitty's introduction right when I was 13. And Kitty was from the same area I'm from. I, ahem, might have some overidentification issues going on even though I've been a cheapskate/boycotting the X-titles since Age of Apocalypse.

Thank God you asked, because I was trying to figure that one out myself. I don't remember ever hearing anything on the show about her not being able to drink due to naquadah. And don't we see her with a beer at some point after In the Line of Duty? *confused*

[identity profile] karma-aster.livejournal.com 2005-06-17 06:15 pm (UTC)(link)
I wish I could say/do something that would make everything all better for you. It'd be nice if I could say something warm and witty and completely insightful that would just make you look up and realize that, despite some of the crap that goes on in it, the world is actually a pretty wonderful place and you being in it is a big part of the reason why. But I'm just going to have to settle for saying that I love you, I think you're a wonderful person who deserves to have very good things happen to you, and that I really, truly believe that things are going to get better.

And I'm also giving you a spare Kara Thrace.

...wearing a tanktop.

[identity profile] karma-aster.livejournal.com 2005-06-17 06:18 pm (UTC)(link)
And probably put him off on the idea of off-world sex for ages.

...until the third season, anyway. Although, hell, for all we saw, Jack and Laira easily could have just spent the night snuggling.

(meekly)I'd be okay with innocent Jack-snuggling.

[identity profile] splash-the-cat.livejournal.com 2005-06-17 06:18 pm (UTC)(link)
I think it's implied in Foothold that sedatives are less effective on her since Jolinar, so maybe that's where it comes from.

[identity profile] nakedtoes.livejournal.com 2005-06-17 06:27 pm (UTC)(link)
Also, they have to drug her up in Desperate Measures far more than expected? It's not canon per se, but there's a case for extrapolating it.
havocthecat: the lady of shalott (Default)

[personal profile] havocthecat 2005-06-17 06:30 pm (UTC)(link)
Yeah, but that doesn't mean she can't drink. Hm. I get the feeling this might be something that's fanon somewhere that someone got confused and thought was canon. I had someone do that about Janet--thought she was canonically abused by her ex-husband, when really, all we know is that he was a sexist jerk.

Mreep. Thank you. Part of that is the over-abundance of sappy Remy/Rogue fic that X-fandom used to have. Not to mention the Rogue/Logan crap after the first X-movie.

And the underire. ARG. Hates it,precious.

[identity profile] splash-the-cat.livejournal.com 2005-06-17 06:35 pm (UTC)(link)
I don't think Risa was implying that she couldn't drink at all, just that she's not likely to get drunk.

But, but, AoA is frakking beautiful! It's, like, Angst on Crack with weird-ass plot! And has FFKOAH, now that I think about it, given Magsy and Rogue (who were strangely uber-cute).

Damn you. I just put them on my list and so they are OUT and I want to reread them.

Although it did spawn Nate Grey, so I suppose that's one strike against it.

Kitty! Yes. I love her madly (even in AoA, where she was the bitch-queen on ACID and kicked so much ass--augh! Paige and GenNext are deaaaaaaaaaaaaad). Er, if that wasn't already apparent.

I do prefer her a little less, ah, naive. And not in X-Men.

You left because of AoA? I left because of Operation: Zero IntelligenceTolerance, and the crappy nature of the books after Onslut. Sigh. (and I'm also scared that it's been TEN YEARS since AoA)

[identity profile] splash-the-cat.livejournal.com 2005-06-17 06:37 pm (UTC)(link)
You may be right on DM, I don't remember.

but there's a case for extrapolating it.

*nod* That makes sense. I think I just, by default, tend to lump it in all the other fanon stuff about Jolinar's after-effects (the whole birth control being ineffective or Sam not being able to conceive).

[identity profile] fallenbelle.livejournal.com 2005-06-17 06:38 pm (UTC)(link)

[identity profile] nakedtoes.livejournal.com 2005-06-17 06:39 pm (UTC)(link)
Really? Every fic I read seems to have Sam passing out into Jack's arms. And I've never done that myself, no.

The worst thing is, I think that the idea of Sam having problems with birth control makes sense, it's just that it's been done so often...

See, now I feel your angst and frustration at not being able to find a job and to have a bra with a broken underwire. I hate that. In fact, I have a love/hate relationship with underwire-I would never buy a bra without it, and I hate how it breaks. And it totally sucks when you can't afford to replace it. I've been there, sweetie, and I hope you get a break soon.

Is there anything you would like from Japan? Candy? Comic porn? Let me know, I'm already getting a box of Pocky to send to Kate.

OMG! May I say, omfg, that I WILL LOVE ANYTHING YOU WRITE. I'm that freakish number one fan of your writing, so MWAHAHAH. And my completely unbiased opinon is the same as others have said above: You write cliches...PERFECTLY. There is a reason why some plot devices are cliches -- they're good storylines, they just become EASY and SIMPLISTIC in the hands of a novice. You are a MASTER. GO FOR IT, babe. Your SJ fic never disappoints. I love your fic and many many many others do too. ::SMOOOOCH::

From my understanding of what she's said, the marker/naquadah shouldn't affect anything. Now, canonically, they've decided to say it's harder to drug her due to the naquadah.

The marker shouldn't even show up in a normal blood test, iirc what Timey was saying.

So sorry about the job thing. I don't know what happened to common courtesy, such as letting an applicant know that they didn't get the job. Apparently common courtesy, like common sense, isn't so common.

As for your writing? You needn't worry. I've read all your SG:1 fic and it's far from cliche. It's good. It's snarky good! It's fantabulously great! And so what if you use a cliche plot? You put your own spin on it and it's no longer cliche. It's Lyssie/ALCPunk fic.
