Lyssie's Chick Power Playlist
This is a hard thing for me to do. Pick a certain number of songs... So I tried to go with a theme Woman on Top and all of that. It's still sort of a mixed bag. Enjoy! And, er, if the links run out and someone still wants something, lemme know.
1. Echobelly - Give Her a Gun | My favorite I'm in a Feminazi Mood song ever. 'blame the mother/sell the sister/before she blows you away'
2. Tracy Bonham - Behind Every Good Woman | I think of this as the Lizzie Weir song. Best line ever: 'something tells me that Snow White was smarter than we think/seven men at perfect height, seven noses pink'.
3. Poe - Angry Johnny | Again with the "Women can do a hell of a lot" theme, this song is all about an assassin... Or a woman talking about sex. Either way, I love it. 'I can do it to your mind/I can do it to your face/I can do it with integrity/I can do it with disgrace'
4. Bjork - Joga | I don't know why I like this song so much. Maybe it's the urgency in the sound, the way it pulses. Hrm. 'you don't have to speak/i feel/emotional landscapes/they puzzle me'
5. Jane Wiedlin - Icicle | Sometimes, I feel like this is me. All sharp and see-through except that I'm kinda fragile. It's also a nice and bouncy song. 'How can I explain this force of gravity?/I feel it pulling my heart out of me'
6. Alana Davis - Murder | Every time someone says to me, "OMG Norah Jones is so fabulous!" I shrug. Because Alana Davis came first, in my lexicon, and no one knows her (and she covered Ani diFranco, whose voice I cannot stand in the least, so maybe that's why people shun her). Which is kind of sad, since Alana actually was kind of political and bitchy (and Jones is just pop). 'I think I might've heard some screamin'/might have heard somebody cryin'/now I wonder am I dreamin'/is my mind tellin' me a lie?'
7. Bif Naked - I Died | Damn. I was going to do 'I Love Myself Today', but I don't appear to have it. *appalled* Instead, I'll do this one. Which is a silly song. 'I died eating french fries/in the restaurant on the corner/where you broke my heart'
8. Belly - Untitled and Unsung | Ok, so this one's more depressing. But it's the good, angsty kind that makes you feel warm and gushy inside. 'I want your pearly hand in my hair/we make a strange and furious pair'
9. Tori Amos - Precious Things | I suppose you can't have a Girl Power manifesto without Tori.... And this is one of her best. 'So I ran faster/but you caught me here/yes my loyalty's turned'
10. Eurythmics - Missionary Man | Or Annie Lennox. I'm tempted to do another one of these tomorrow just so I can pimp 'I Saved the World Today'. 'I was born an original sinner/I was born from original sin'
11. Nina Gordon - Number One Camera | It's bouncy, it's perky, and it's cute. It's also fun to sing along with and has some fun lines. 'up, up, and away/my beautiful cliche/I have wasted too much precious time/pretending I'm ok'
12. Luscious Jackson - Ladyfingers | While it suffers slightly by being kinda sappy, I've always kind of said this was sort of a Domino song... 'I'm so tired of my guns and my vanity/I'd like to trade 'em in for some sanity'
13. Emma Townsend - The Last Time I Saw Sadie | A bitter woman, hating everyone including herself, the lyrics are laid over luscious music. Women aren't all sugar and spice, sometimes we're twisted licorisce sticks and thorns. (also, I think she's supposed to be some famous guy's daughter, but I have no idea) 'on the edge of nowhere/where I can howl/without the neighbors noticing'

Dude. You didn't? I've done it, at least once. If not more than that. Sometimes, you need it on repeat and repeat and repeat....
