lyssie: (Mystique - bad idea)

Open letter to BSG fans who were also SG fans,

As a furtherance of something said elsewhere, please please leave your stupid fucking misuse of the word 'smarm' at the door. I loathe it with every fiber of my being, and find every person who catergorizes friendship as 'fake and oily' pathetic and idiotic.

Thank you for your time.

Thank you. I loathe and detest the fannish sense of that word for exactly that reason. I'm resigned to it never going away (another one we can thank the XF fen for, as near as anyone can tell), but at least it's nice to have someone to pout about it with.

SG-smarm is often pre-slash that doesn't have the guts to call itself slash. And I wouldn't want to have anyone as a friend who thinks friendship is 'fake and oily'.

Oh, I've seen gen and het also termed smarm. And I just don't get it. At all.

I'm curious. That fandom ascribes a different meaning to smarm?

It apparently means friendship.

[identity profile] raffaella.livejournal.com 2005-04-22 10:46 pm (UTC)(link)
Oookay. This is very stupid. Do they do it on purpose or do they have trouble understanding the definitions?

I would assume on purpose. I wasn't around for the beginning (you can be sure I would have ridiculed it) of the changing definition...

I am glad you explained this, because other than its dictionary meaning, I just don't get smarm or smarmy as applies to fic. Why would anyone ever want to characterize anything as smarmy unless it's a put down? Am I missing something here? That's possible, because of my under rock dwelling and all, but WTF???

Should I just go back under my rock and cruise my friend's list looking for the good, non-smarmy, fine with me if it's slash, OT3, het, team, whatever it is as long as they like Sam and it's not bizarro SG fic? Yeah, I think I'll do that. :::skips off into the puddle singing Lalala:::

See, the people who like the word "smarm" as it applies to fic think "unctuous" is a synonym for something kinky involving penises. "Fulsome" is often used to describe breasts or penises that are about to throb wildly with passion, (which seems like it'd be painful, but apparently it works in fic,) and the rest is lubricant. So smarm means "What They Did Before They Sexed," but the writer is too cowardly to call it a foreplay fic.

So yeah, BUTTER!!!!! and BUTTERSEX!!!!!! (but they chicken out before they write the sex.)

Eh... I'm so glad I have no idea about SG-1 fandom.

You know, smarm doesn't even sound like cute word.

Thank you! Fandom people had confused me to the extent that I wasn't sure if the dictionary defn was correct or something I'd made up. I hate it when that happens

[identity profile] lavidaessueno.livejournal.com 2005-04-23 06:48 pm (UTC)(link)
Agreed! And add to the list "tender" as in "tender opening."

If it's that tender, don't use it!

Sheesh.

I would never have read anything labelled smarm without knowing because I would have thought it was well, smarmy!

Last time I checked, Heliopolis had it as a category when you upload. I think Gateworld does, too.

Oh, true. I just tend to wander through, at times. Of course, I can't throw stones, since ff'net is where I put everything.. But then, I'm lazy.
