ugh.SG-1 Fic Help

Ok, so, I'm writing fic, see, and I produced this Jacob and Hammond scene. And, the thing is, I think I've actually read it before, and if I have, this makes it unintentional plagiarism.

So, in the interests of at least trying to be original, could I get a few opinions on whether the following (rough draft) scene has been written before? Because if it has, I'm scrapping it. Maybe I'll have Jake dance, or something...

Dunh, dunh, dunh, Jacob found out Sam and Jack were having a 'relationship' while he was still her commanding officer... Shut up, I know it's a cliche.

"George."

"I know, Jacob." Hammond sighed, "And don't think I condone their actions."

"But you're letting them get away with them."

"Jacob, you and I both know that this sort of thing goes on all the time."

"Yes, but--"

"And if I stopped them, if I transfered Major Carter, or forced Colonel O'Neill to retire, what then?"

"Then, then, they won't be breaking the regulations."

"But they will be hard to deal with. Now, I know that most teams aren't SG-1. But all four of them would go to hell and back for each other."

"I don't see--"

"They should have been split up before six months were up in the life of the SGC, Jacob. They were too close then. They're even closer now."

"So, they're all compromized, then."

"In a way, yes." General Hammond looked tired. "But I've never seen four individuals so willing to sacrifice themselves for what they believe in. And they believe in the defence of Earth. Jesus, Jacob, they've all died at least twice. Dr. Jackson spent a year ascended!"

"And that makes it ok."

"No. Their ability to function as a team and without, does."

What kind of dance would it be...the chicken dance?

Nothing strikes me though as being overly plagairistic (is that a word?), but I have seen the scene before in other fics. BUT, I have never seen it in Lyss!fic, and therefore I think it's okay. I'd also like to see it in goodfic as well.

*sniffle* Ahhhh, Jacob.

Jacob says ain't no way in hell. This is why he totally supports Sam in her endeavors to elope. Or live in sin with Jack. No wedding reception to be embarrassed at.

And, *nods*. Sigh. Oh well. We'll see. My brain isn't really writery right now, anyway.

[identity profile] nakedtoes.livejournal.com 2005-04-18 05:39 am (UTC)(link)
It's a fairly generic scene. OTOH, there's one particular fic I'm thinking of where Jacob tells Hammond that he should have transferred one of them straight away, Hammond retaliates by saying that the world would have ended x times over, and then Jacob says, "Even so..."

But I really can't find the reference - I thought it was something I'd seen on ff.net, but maybe not.

I don't know if that helps at all?

Ah. Hrm. Sigh. Maybe when I finish it, I'll do the author's note in loud letters saying, "if this bears resemblance, please let me know, since I think it might, but I don't know" or something. Also, "yes, this has been done before..."

It kinda helps. :)

Maybe it was something by Jo R? I don't know, I can see that style of writing in my head.

I know, very unhelpful. I think a disclaimer should be fine. At least it shows that you don't have evil, plagiaristic intentions. (Or else you're deeply cunning and evil, but that would be stretching things)

(reads other comment) Or maybe not! Ignore me...

*gasp* Are you saying I'm not deeply cunning and evil?

*isgood*

You ARE deeply cunning and evil, which is why I love you, silly Lyssies!

I don't remember any specific scenes that read like that - just lots of Hammond/Jacob ones on the same lines but they usually ended with them having a bet. So I think you're safe.

But on the other hand...

... What kind of dance would he do? *intrigued* :)

It was definitely NOT ending with a bet. (and, dear god, for once when I say rough, I meant rough...) I just, suddenly, have this terrible fear that I've read this fic already... sigh. Oh well.

I'm not sure. Jacob is giving me this "I don't think so" look. And Selmak is mocking him.

Well, like everyone else has said, nothing seems really plagiarised. But I just want more Jacob and George fic. Because they're awesome and have a fun friendship.

I've tried writing some but than my muse went on vacation. *pout*

Hrm. I do need to try to make this more than about Sam and Jack. sigh.

*nods* It's always good to do something new. And I'd love to see your Jacob and George.

I've read something fairly similar to this somewhere, but can't remember where or when or by whom.

Thing to remember here is it has to be word for word to be plagiarized - similar is okay, especially if you didn't intentionally copy someone. Copyright protects the expression of an idea (the actual words used), not the idea itself.

(I know the real intention here is not to step on anyone's toes as against being covered against a lawsuit.)

True. I just have this feeling that I've read this conversation word for word somewhere (well, not all of it, but the gist at least. sigh)

And I know I have a tendency to remember lines and snippets and put them in where applicable. Quotes and song lyrics make occasional appearances as description...

[identity profile] matt1969.livejournal.com 2005-04-18 06:14 pm (UTC)(link)
seen similar stuff before, but you're not intentionally plagerizing. The thing is, there's so much fic out there that occasionally there might be similarities, but each author will have his/her own take.

*nods* I've definitely done the "yes, other people have done this" thing before. But this was, er, as I said further up, I have this terrible feeling this is a conversation ripped from somewhere word for word.
