omfg. I know why I'm not on ANY feminist communities. THEY'RE ALL BATSHIT INSANE.

This: http://www.livejournal.com/community/feminist_rage/624520.html?thread=13033608#t13033608 is a response to a rant about Sin City being mysoginistic. It's polite and articulate, and the poster GETS BANNED for disagreeing with the Collective.

Seriously. Sin City was a fabulous movie, and while some of the characters were mysoginistic, the movie as a whole was rather "Women can do whatever the fuck they want and come out on top".

ARG.

Obviously, I'm really being duped by the male hiearchy.

ETA from the future (2012): The entire f_r community appears to have been purged until 2009, when posts exist again. It's sad, it is.

sorry. They just really hit some of my hot-buttons. And, well, banning someone for polite disagreement... *headshake*

Reading through the thread, apparently they spell out in the RULES that they'll do that. The mod actually point out in one reply that (paraphrasing slightly) "you don't have to agree, but you have to check to the rules to make sure it's appropriate to post your disagreement here."

Which, while consistent, is still completely batshit in my book.

Yeah. I'd last all of two minutes in a place like that.

No. 30 seconds.

I know. The alternative IS worse. But I still... Y'know, this all goes back to my rant about how women in movies aren't allowed to be held to the same lack of standards men are. The women in movies have to be a certain stereotype or, omg, they're mysoginist...

Arg. Have a cookie. And look at Jack s'more.

See, now I want to see Sin City even more. *checks German release date* Tough luck.

Say, is feminist these days a synonym for "we're all sexless bitches who like to moan about men being evil and everyone, especially women who like sex and guys or sex and girls or tolerance or logic, are really fucking oppressing us"? Because if that's what feminist means these days then I'll have to turn in my membership card and get the hell out of Dodge.

Just saying, I like my bra.

Yes. Go see movie.

I keep thinking that these gals must be frustrated, because the whole world seems to be against them *and* they're not getting any. Must be a sad kind of life :D Am I ever glad that I can see the worth of a woman even when she's wearing skimpy outfits.

:goes and peeks:

I am a feminist, here me roar--I thought she totally missed the point.

OMG. This is why feminism gets a bad rap, because certain elements go to extremes over one aspect of something in pop-culture or general culture and miss the damn forest for the trees.

And then they ban parallaxgl50 for being rude? That was not rude, that was a good rebuttal.

I have no problem with people not liking Sin City as movie, as comic book, and seeing it as misogynistic. But damn, at least listen to the other side of the arguement.

Sheesh.

[identity profile] lyssie.livejournal.com 2005-04-05 11:19 pm (UTC)(link)
Oh, I'm fully aware that some aspects are mysoginistic. But if you're gonna talk about how the women are depicted, what about the men?

They're corrupt, nasty, horrible, full of lust, and generally Not Nice.

I don't hear the men out there bitching about how Sin City makes them all out to be psychopathic rapists who eat women.

[identity profile] kkglinka.livejournal.com 2005-04-06 12:46 am (UTC)(link)
That's what I don't get, either. I've read all the Sin City books. Yes, the women get victimized. Yes, they're sexually exploited, but they also use it to get what they want, most times. Like how Ava-whatshername totally does over Dwight as a way to escape her creepy husband, who's victimizing her. And the guys are always getting shot, stabbed, killed, tortured and pigeon-holed into 'expected manly behavior', regardless of what they might want out of life. Everyone is being exploited and exploiting each other. Human condition stuff, broader than isolated misogyny, you know?
(deleted comment)

[identity profile] kkglinka.livejournal.com 2005-04-06 02:35 am (UTC)(link)
Oh, heh, yeah. I was talking about the graphic novels, not the movie. The tpb makes it pretty damn clear that a) Ava married for money and b) her husband used that scary guard guy to keep her under perfect control. She was hoping to use her past relationship with Dwight to get both her husband and guard killed, so she could inherit the estate. She also makes up a lot of shit.

Glad you got a kick out of the icons.

Okay, good. Just wanted to make sure we were discussing the same thing, since I've yet to see the movie. Anyhow, I read Manoute as being like a creepy stalker, except he was hired by Damien. He seemed (to me) to have an obsession with protecting Ava, whether she wanted it or not, thereby playing into Damien's hands.

Or, maybe you're right, and it was some elaborate sick rich people game staged by the two for shits and giggles. Especially since Dwight was: "Oh, love, forsaken! Doom! Angst!" and Ava was: "Mwahahaha, I make you angst pretzel!"

I don't suppose the movie clarifies it any?

To be fair, the OP said the portrayal of the men sucked too. She just didn't go into detail.

Still and all, not a community I'll be reading regularly any time soon, unless I need to counter a sudden drop in blood pressure or something. *rolls eyes*

And y'know, I don't know that it would work for that either. I can't summon much beyond pity for a whole LJ community whose "rage" is so fragile that it must be expressed in a comm whose rules explicitly ban dissent. What. Ever.

The technical definition for feminism is equality of both sexes, but nowadays I prefer to be an egalitarian, equality for everyone regardless.

Don't blame you, as annoying as it is to have to make the choice.

Talk about a term in need of reclaiming. :-P

I'm a feminist (the equality kind, not the batshit insane kind), but I'm not going anywhere near the feminist communities, let alone one with "rage" in the name. It's more than my mental health is worth. ;)

Am currently feeling rather vindicated for stance against militant feminism. Nice to see other folks exasperated with this stuff, and still firmly of the opinion that it is high time we started demanding respect and dignity "for all" and assume that gender, race, color, and other factors go without saying. You know, "all" meaning all.
