Red Cap, and why Jo McDonagh made me love Starbuck.
First off, A.j.! The dvds are GORGeous.
Let's see if this is at all coherent. Jo McDonagh is a member of SIB, part of the British military stationed in Germany. She's blonde, slim, intelligent, and frequently steps out of bounds to figure things out.
And she isn't always right.
The first we meet Jo, she takes a paratroopers punch to the face, gets back up, and proceeds to try to kick the crap out of him. Despite giving as good as she gets, she ends up on the ground from a wicked blow to the solar plexus, her lip bloodied (and bruises everywhere), while the para hops a fence. Although, I'm pretty sure he'll feel that for a while.
The first time we meet Starbuck, she's betting, mocking the XO, and winning. When he overturns the table, she punches him. And would have done more if not stopped.
In some ways, they're very different. Jo is less of a fighter, and tends to walk herself into trouble (and talk herself out of it). But Kara isn't as manipulative as Jo. She doesn't spin stories on the spur of the moment.
They are similar, though. Both have deaths in their pasts they feel responsible for. Both push themselves too hard because of those deaths.
In short. If I hadn't loved Jo McDonagh, I might've not liked Starbuck...
