hrm...

I dreamt in LJ discussions. It started on my lj, and then slid over to nos's. Something about women and their role in SF, and how once a woman becomes motherly/nurturing she's discounted as an interesting character.

I should go find food.

Food is very good. *makes aface* Even if it's ramen noodles.

(I know. My brain is strange.)

Um...I'm motherly and nurturing...(raises hand meekly)

Unless, of course, she's only a supporting character to begin with. Supporting characters are allowed to be motherly and nurturing. Or unless, as a main character, she only shows rare and brief glimpses of these traits. Apparently scifi fans can only take nurturing in small doses?

*g* I suspect I read nos' lj too often before sleeping. But, yeah. There was something about how everyone always complains that Cassandra's intro made Sam a wimp. But no one ever rags on Jack for being everyone's dad.

erm. anyway. Maybe I'll rant later.

Hey, woman!

That would be Torment of Tantelus.

In the end, they rig it so lightning strickes power the gate, and make their way back through. Daniel almost gets left behind because he doesn't want to leave the shiny depository of knowledge. And Ernest and Catherine? Well, we assume they lived happily ever after...

Yay! Thank you. You're a wonderful repository of knowledge. So much cooler than Atlantis.

Well, Xena and Gabs and Scully made for terrible moms. But Trinity was very motherly and nurturing and that was good...er... and I love Momma!Scully ... er...

Sam would be a great mom too. Kara would suck at it.

Kira Nerys! Although I'm not sure how much that case really counts.

What about...

What about the Sig Weaver character in "Alien" and the Linda Hamilton character in the "Terminator" movies? They had children at least part of the time, and aren't they considered strong characters? Is that only because they had lots of explosives and weapons. They also worked alone, for the most part, rather than in a team.

Which characters are discounted in your dream/discussion? Besides Sam Carter in Stargate, who occasionally puts down her P-90 to kiss a guy...

I LOVE Sara Conner! I even Role Play her and feel like she really got the bums rush in T2. Unfortunalty, everyone seems to want to cram her into the role of the psychopathic messiah.

I honestly don't remember. (although I think Sam was in there, with mention of how Singularity ruined her character... o.O)
