hrm. this is shorter than I'd thought...

Oh well. BSG ficlet. Kara gets... News, from Doc Cottle. For, y'know, Meyer, and me, and Kym.... PG13/whatever. Don't own 'em.

"You can't be serious."

Doctor Cottle shrugged and tapped his cigarette on his desk, the ashes falling to the floor. "I can, and I am, Lieutenant."

"This is..." Starbuck snorted, throwing a hand out. "This is frakking insane."

"No. It's life."

"Well, fine, then." Her palm flattened on the desk, and she looked him in the eye. "Get rid of it."

He studied her a moment, then took a drag on his cig, "Why?"

"I'm a combat pilot, Doc. I can't be out for however long--what, nine months?" She shook her head. "That's frakking stupid. And I can't do it."

He continued to study her, then nodded, once. "I'll schedule the procedure."

"Thanks, Doc." A half-smile. "Knew I could count on you."

His voice stopped her as she reached the door. "Have you any idea who the father is?"

"Does that matter?"

"No," he conceded.

"Then I'll expect to hear word on my appointment, Doc."

"Lieutenant."

"Yeah?"

"Take it easy until the procedure."

"Oh, you know me, Doc. I'm all about takin' it easy." The smile she shot him over her shoulder was brilliant.

"Yes," he said softly after she'd gone. "That's what I'm afraid of."

You know, it strikes me how much of Kara's promiscuity is assumed.

Admittedly, it's probably a valid assumption, given her attitude towards smoking, drinking, gambling, and authority in general. But the closest we get to an actual demonstration of Kara's approach to sex in the series itself is her flirting with (or rather, her response to flirting from) Baltar over the card game in "Water" (or was it "Bastille Day"?). We get no anecdotal evidence of her sleeping around, as we do with Ellen Tigh. Within the series, Billy's seen more action than Starbuck has. We've seen her having sex with Zak in flashback, sure, but the two of them were apparently engaged at the time.

Now, I grant you, we've still got a few episodes left in the first season to see, and for all I know in next week's ep, Starbuck organizes a fleet-wide orgy. But until then, food for thought.

Yeah, got that. And if Lyssie had been writing for the actual show and not a piece of fanfic, I'd concede the point. Based on the evidence we've seen onscreen, however, it's still just an assumption (that Lyssie has taken to a logical conclusion).

Oh, very true. I think part of it is that I'm assuming that pilots do everything loudly. Drinking, gambling, fighting, flying, frakking. Sex is sometimes considered a natural outlet.

However, there is canon evidence that everyone at least gets masturbation, so maybe they all have really good vibrators.

*coughs*

Part of this is possibly the fact that the first Starbuck was, well, a girl on every planet? And I don't mind carrying it over.

But that's possibly just me.

However, there is canon evidence that everyone at least gets masturbation, so maybe they all have really good vibrators.

[Ian thinks] Must have missed that. Masturbation references... Starbuck walking in on Baltar's fantasy sex with Six, and teasing Hot Dog about his premature landings... okay, I'll buy that.

Part of this is possibly the fact that the first Starbuck was, well, a girl on every planet? And I don't mind carrying it over.

Your choice of "was" instead of "had" put a really weird image in my head.

Those were the two instances I was thinking of. In the first, yeah, they laughed. But it was the kind of guilty acknowledgement that they're all whacking off. To put it crudely.

*laughs* And I was in the middle of saying Starbuck was a man, and got distracted by needing to say 'girl on every planet'. Sorry about that. *g*

Ah but look at the missing scenes, Billy hasn't had sex with Dee just yet.

And Kara? I think it's a good assumption just looking at the character.

[identity profile] ianmcin.livejournal.com 2005-03-14 02:27 am (UTC)(link)
Ah but look at the missing scenes,

Er... where are they?

Billy hasn't had sex with Dee just yet.

That's kind of my point, really. Billy's brief first-date snuggling with Dee in "Tigh Me Up, Tigh Me Down" constitutes more action than we've actually seen - or heard - Kara get within the course of the series. (Of course, Kara's gotten busy with her then-fiance in flashback, but no sign of even a date since Caprica got blowed up real good.)

And Kara? I think it's a good assumption just looking at the character.

I'm not saying it's not a good assumption. I'm saying that whether it's a good one or not, it is just an assumption at this point (as of "The Hand of God").

Ron Moore's made reference, in one of his interviews, to "Starbuck's promiscuity" which is the only thing you would have to really give you any sense of this as a character point.

Of course, we can ask "What the heck does he mean by promiscuity?" but there's another can o' worms. By some standards, that's sleeping around without the benefit of marriag (the horror!) by others, it requires a serious effort.

Thanks for a fic where our favourite Viper pilot has a logical reaction to her pregnancy. There's a common cliché in American TV and movies, where a woman emphatically doesn't want to get pregnant, and it happens, and suddenly an abortion is out of the question. Because life is sacred, whatever the circumstances of the pregnancy. Or she goes to have an abortion, but can't bring herself to it. Because life is sacred. It kills me, seriously. I'm sure there are thousands of women for whom a pregnancy is a disaster and who are relieved when they can have an abortion (I'm not saying happy. Just relieved), but it's apparently something you're not supposed to show on TV. So I beg the gods and R. Moore and whoever takes care of these things to spare us that particular cliché on BSG. If they ever get Kara pregnant and she wants to keep the baby, whatever the consequences, or she has to because it's a Prophecy Baby, I'll break something.

Oh, I am all over abortion as a necessity as needed. Nostalgia is a horrible influence. And, yeah. I hate the way it's generally portrayed and no one ever gets one, unless there's a medical reason, or, heaven forfend, a rape.

Thank you. Now Jack looks disturbed, because Daniel started snickering about Thor combining his Ancient genes with Sam's brilliance and Starbuck's piloting skills. Or something. And Daniel thinks that kid would terrorize Jack into an early grave.

Jack's still stuck at the thought of Carter having a child of his.

And Sam's considering converting to lesbianism and running away with Starbuck. Vipers are more fun that wormholes.

[personal profile] woodface 2005-03-14 02:35 am (UTC)(link)
Starbuck is weirded out and about to go kick Daniel's ass.

And she's very much open to the idea of abducting Sam to the Galactica. Jack is clearly not man enough to frak Sam, so much to a point where he probably doesn't deserve her. She's convinced she can show Sam a fun time.

Ah. I see. But could we have one of the guys thinking he MIGHT have been the father? And all of the angst and whine of "OMG - WTF did you do that for?! I could have had a son and raised him in this modern day hell and there would be hope for the future and really sappy background music and blahblahblahasparagusblah..." and just have Kara sitting back going "Why the hell did I fuck you again?"

...it's a private procedure. I doubt anyone is actually going to know about it. Doc certainly isn't going to spread it (and if Roslin's cancer hasn't gotten out...) I highly doubt Kara's going to bounce around saying, "Frak me, I almost had a kid."

Now, it *might* go into her file, but I doubt it. It will be on her medical records.
