Mess hall. Cafeteria. The commissary is the general store. Shai is already perfectly willing to smack me upside the head if I mix them up (mainly due to Red Cap's fault). But it's fucking irritating to see it in stories.

Jan. No, just, NO, people. No one calls Janet 'Jan'. Please stop making me growl on her behalf. She's small enough already, y'know.

(I've ranted on this one before) Calling Sam 'Sammie'. STOP IT. Jacob has canonically called her Sammie ONCE. And she gave him the "if I weren't afraid you were dying and needed this symbiote, I would SO KILL YOU" look. So stop it already.

On the other hand, I don't care WHAT canon has said. Jack's full name is not 'John' or 'Johnathan' (or any spelling variation). It's Jack. Just. Jack. So, just to make things clear, if I ever post a story where he's called Jonathan, you will know I'm a pod person.

Unless he's in a hurry, and all of his words are slurred together, Teal'c is not calling people one-word names. He's calling them by their given name/name of respect. "Colonel Carter", "Daniel Jackson", "General Hammond". So quit running the names into one glommed word, for frak's sake.

(In X-Men, btw, only Jean is allowed to call Nate "Nathan Christopher Charles Summers Dayspring Askani'Son!" and only when he's being a brat. Although Dom might do it for shits and giggles. And Chuckles is, well, god knows what Chuckles will do.)

Yup. On a military base, the commissary is the general store. My roommate, who is almost out of the army keeps making threatening motions when they make that mistake on the show.

The commissary is specifically the grocery store, almost entirely food. The regular department store (like Walmart) is the "PX" (Post Exchange) for Army or "BX"(Base Exchange) for Navy and Air Force. Commissary used to be used in general language in the U.S. to mean cafeteria, and on Stargate they definitely have said commissary for cafeteria, but it should be Mess or Mess Hall.

I have to admit, I loved this from Jacob, and it's my guess that he did it a LOT when she was little. But, I have only used it once in fic (from another character, btw), and it was in a note, not outloud, and I used it once in a desktop (Jacob-related). Am I forgiven?*g* But I do hate it when it's used prolificly, especially from Jack. Igg... Altho, it's better than "honey" or "sweetheart".:D Have you read Aeryn's "Drowning"? (Fabulous must-read fic, for those who haven't) After that, I could never hear "Sammie" again without thinking of that.:D
