Random things that... make me go hmmmm.

1. Casting spoilers. For as long as I can remember, casting was not a spoiler, it was simply the newest fun fact about whatever show/movie you were planning to watch. I remember when Paul McGann was announced as the new Doctor in the new tv movie. When Craig Charles' incarceration delayed seasons of Red Dwarf... And now people are afraid of knowing what the future will hold.

tsk.

2. icons. The whole "please don't take without credit," "textless icons are not bases", "please do not alter".. etc, etc. What is the point of making a hundred icons which can't be altered/blah? I kind of get the 'credit me' thing. After all, sometimes, it's hard to make icons. But, seriously, folks. If you take an icon and sit down with it for a couple hours (and the original image it's from), you can, quite probably, reproduce the exact effects... I don't know why you would want to, for some of the icons I've seen, but you could do it. Photoshop, Paintshop, whatever, you can play. (which is what I always used to tell people about non-linear editing...) And do all sorts of things.

3. There was no three, unless I got distracted by it. And, shit. I forgot to tape Flesh and Blood. again. arrrr.

It takes a lot of time and creativity and work to make nice icons. It's not really about reproducing effects, but trying to make something original. I think icons are considered a form of fanart by many folks. And anyone can imitate effects or follow tutorials, but it's more about trying to try out different things, be creative, etc. If someone else can do the same thing, that's super, then they should go ahead and do that on their own.

I know a lot of people say, "You don't own the image" and such, but fanfic writers don't really like it when people imitate or copy their stories. Some fic writers don't want people putting their fics up on other sites without prior permission, while others don't mind at all, and a lot of fic writers don't care if others write sequels or something, while some do. It's kind of similar. Some icon makers don't care if people modify theirs or whatever, or they provide bases and things, and others care more about what happens to their icons.

People are protective of different things because of the time and energy they invest, and while sometimes I don't get why they feel a certain way or have certain requirements, whatever, they made it. *shruggies*

And #1 makes me sad.

*nods* It does. I think I just get irritated by the imperious tone of, "I am so much better than anyone else at this, worship my icons and credit me, and don't alter them or you will be struck dead by my magnificence" that the 'rules' people post exude.

*offers walnuts* Hrm. Actually... nuts sound good. *wanders to kitchen*

People come with all sorts of attitude problems; it doesn't always matter what their attitude is. :)

Ooh. I have walnuts.

*agrees* There are a lot of people who are really weird about their icons IMO, 'cause I think even though icons involve creativity and things, the point is usually to share them with other people. Giving credit seems simple enough and courteous, but I don't really understand the "textless icons are not bases" bit myself. One girl was even, "OMFG, you must use these icons as PNGs only, NOT jpegs!" and it was very, "Er, wtf?" Oh well.

*eats walnuts!*

...and if they put the time into reproducing it from the original, they're welcome to a copy of my icon, whether or not I put it up for grabs. But if they're not going to put the time into it, it's polite to let the person who put the work into it decide how it gets used.
