I think it was originally a fashion term. IE -- pink and frills was 'the new black' not that long ago. And black is occasionally the new black.

Sigh. The fashion world scares me.

Black is the classic color that is always fashionable and goes with everything. To refer to something as "the new black" means that is popular, ubiquitious, and works with all the current fashions, generally.

Suffice to say, I just like to stick with black.
