Hrm

So, watching random SG-1 episodes. And, again, I'm reminded how some sections of fandom go on about how unprofessional Sam is for having feelings for her CO, etc, etc, and how her being a woman obviously makes her unable to behave correctly in any given situation.

blah, blah...

Anyway. The end of the Sam gets kidnapped by Conrad episode has her BAREFOOT with a pistol stalking the hospital. She comes upon Jack, down, and what does she do?

Does she immediately drop beside him and weep and lament that her Colonel got shot?

Does she whimper and cry over the radio about her woobie being down?

No.

Does she drop beside him to check he's ok?

Also no.

The first thing she does is secure the area. THEN she checks his pulse, THEN she calls on the radio with a terse "Man down. The Colonel's been shot."

No hysterics, no weeping, whinging, whining, or behaving like a lovesick fool.

Hrm.

The floors were probably cold. Plus, she was creeping around an abandoned hospital that might've had, y'know, broken glass and other painful things for barefeet to encounter.

There is also the part where she been doped up for DAYS, without moving around and probably without much, if any, solid food.

I love the fics that have her keeling over pretty much as soon as the scene cuts. 'Cause, dude.

But she secured the area, dammit! :-D

*nod* That makes sense. Adrenaline can only get you so far....

I'm new to the fandom and haven't yet run into this contingent of which you speak, but they are sorely mistaken and obviously clueless in their interpretation of the show. I think that the one they're watching is one seen through that mirror thingie that leads to alternate realities.

[identity profile] lyssie.livejournal.com 2004-12-01 02:33 pm (UTC)(link)
They are watching the Bizzarro Stargate, yes. ;)

I'm pretty sure that one day we'll discover they're all wrong and were actually watching a completely different show. Oops.

[identity profile] karma-aster.livejournal.com 2004-12-01 02:31 pm (UTC)(link)
Well, DUH! Sam's being a tough, kickass, brilliant, ridiculously-brave person is one of the reasons that I fangirl her so much.

[identity profile] wiliqueen.livejournal.com 2004-12-01 02:40 pm (UTC)(link)
That would be because you're watching the actual show.

I have no idea what some people are watching. I especially have no idea what they were watching in season 4. *shrug*

*nods* The weird thing is to read fic on both sides of the shipper debate, and discover that both sides equally think she's ... pathetic. Bah.
ext_5608: (fidget)

[identity profile] wiliqueen.livejournal.com 2004-12-01 02:56 pm (UTC)(link)
Dude. Once again glad that I only read fic recced (or written) by people I trust.

I'm bowled over by all the comments I got on "Still Waters," as well as a vid I made a couple years back, with various permutations of this being "the Sam we love" or whatever.

Practically everyone I associate with in the fandom loves her for exactly the reasons you're talking about, so I'm completely flummoxed every time I hear about all the fic with some bizarre distorted critter impersonating her.

[identity profile] besyd.livejournal.com 2004-12-01 04:12 pm (UTC)(link)
Love this ep on so many levels. Especially for the very points you make. Very. Strong. Sam.

Can anyone rec me some good related fics?

But really ... poor woobie!

[personal profile] woodface 2004-12-01 04:39 pm (UTC)(link)
Indeed.

[identity profile] elly427.livejournal.com 2004-12-01 06:58 pm (UTC)(link)
I've always loved that ep because the Sam/Jack is so subtle and because they both do their jobs and are profession. And hey, yes, part of me wants them collasping into each other's arms as soon as the camera cuts but wehatever.

Yes.

[identity profile] elly427.livejournal.com 2004-12-01 06:58 pm (UTC)(link)
professional, not profession. Hmm.

[identity profile] jemster.livejournal.com 2004-12-02 03:59 pm (UTC)(link)
Don't worry..called someone a dizzy blonde and not a ditzt blonde so happens to the best of us.

[identity profile] jemster.livejournal.com 2004-12-02 04:02 pm (UTC)(link)
I can't even spell ditzy! Gah!

[identity profile] livilla.livejournal.com 2004-12-02 12:54 am (UTC)(link)
And that is why I like Sam. And possibly, why Pete pisses me off...

Hmm.

[identity profile] lyssie.livejournal.com 2004-12-02 07:40 am (UTC)(link)
'Cause he don't see her as the gun-toting, explosives expert who can break your brain with physics equations?

Yeah. That, and the whole.... short thing.

[identity profile] livilla.livejournal.com 2004-12-02 10:05 pm (UTC)(link)
Yeah, that's the one.

Uh, yeah, that would also fit. I was trying to work out what looked odd about them! Yeah, that's it.
ext_18106: (Default)

[identity profile] lyssie.livejournal.com 2004-12-03 10:48 am (UTC)(link)
It's not, y'know, that Pete is all that short. He's actually about average height, I think (Jack and Teal'c and Daniel are all TALL). But, y'know, SAM is tall, so.... *eg* She needs a taller man. Really.

[identity profile] livilla.livejournal.com 2004-12-04 11:02 pm (UTC)(link)
*nods* Yeah, totally. And it's just a coincidence that Jack is the right height!

But Sam and Pete do look odd together. Way odd.

[identity profile] jemster.livejournal.com 2004-12-02 03:41 pm (UTC)(link)
No hysterics, no weeping, whinging, whining, or behaving like a lovesick fool.

That's because as soon as she calls it in she flips the Colonel over onto his back and off come the pants!

You just didn't see that part. ;-)
ext_18106: (Default)

[identity profile] lyssie.livejournal.com 2004-12-02 03:48 pm (UTC)(link)
*snickers*

Damn... I would love to see that part...

[identity profile] jemster.livejournal.com 2004-12-02 03:57 pm (UTC)(link)
Wouldn't we all?

Well, except for the contingent that is watching the other show.

[identity profile] mylittleredgirl.livejournal.com 2004-12-04 11:27 am (UTC)(link)
That's possibly my favourite episode ever, because I am a big dork about kidnapping episodes and fic and whatnot.

However, I must point out that she's actually not barefoot. She's in shoes. I point this out only because it's one of the things that bothers me about the episode -- like, why in the hell did they put her in shoes if she was supposed to stay on the bed and all?
ext_18106: (Default)

[identity profile] lyssie.livejournal.com 2004-12-04 11:42 am (UTC)(link)
shoes! A detail I missed. And I completely agree on you with (I only caught the veryvery end with her walking down to find Jack) -- they wouldn't have put shoes on her...

[identity profile] mylittleredgirl.livejournal.com 2004-12-04 12:30 pm (UTC)(link)
It's more noticeable the first time she's running around the hospital, and then when they toss her back on the bed.

Plus I've watched that episode an awful lot. My roommate made fun of me.
