The WizardWorld Report
Well, since I had some of this already written, and some I wrote just now... I think I remembered most of everything, though Saturday was so a blur thanks to no sleep....
Trip Diary: Day One - Friday
9:30pm
At work, dammit.
Could be snoozing in Chicago already. Mutter.
Tired, though. Slept very little last night. I'm half-excited, half-nervous, half-worried. Jittery.
I tried stretching. Helped a bit. But I dropped off a moment ago.
Strange dream. Frito was gleefully showing people video of Nute disco-ing. And he was, or she wouldn't have been so smug.
Stomach hurts. Not sure if it's nerves. Arg. Hate waiting. Hatehatehatehate it.
Couldn't find my tape player, so I have a radio and it also eats tapes. The other tape player is stuck playing tapes fast. Bah. Listening to the radio now. A Psychadelic Furs Rock Block. Fun.
Realised a bit ago--we're going to have to go by the house. I forgot the cape. And the blue nail polish. Mrrr. Must have. So. Mom gets here at 10, 5 minute stop at house... Should be at the bus station by 10:45. Good.
Bus leaves at 11:30.
*gibber*
Augh! Penny Lany via an orchestra!
Actually, it's not that bad.
For the record: I'm so fucking excited about this I'm making myself sick with tension and worry.
Chicago! Whooo!
Mrr.. Now it's Seargent Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band... Augh.
hrm. I sense filk possibilities.
And now it's Eleanor Rigby.... I think I've heard this album before.
I think I'm partially nervous because I keep expecting to be told I can't go. By Don, really. My boss saying 'Stay or be fired.'
*shudder*
Ah. Time to pack up. 9:50ish.
--
11:40ish
The buses are apparently all running late tonight. Overcrowded, too. Ahwell. A kid's small.
Bloody hell it's a good thing there's an hour between my transfers. Any earlier and I'd miss it.
C'mon, you stupid college fucks! Board the damn bus already!
OK. So I'm stereotyping. But jesus!
I WANT TO GO!!!
Chicago, baby, Chicago.
Ooo. Auuuhhhh.
I'd forgotten the secret for long legs on a bus -- not cut them off. No, you slide them under the seat in front of you.
The driver just came in. There're people at the curb. Must be checking for extra seats, since we're not leaving yet.
There aren't any, dude.
Wow. First come, first served. Good thing I got here early.
Shit. Hungry.
Oh. I'm an idiot. Have a sandwich in my bag.
Oooh! We move!
One group could only fit one on. He decided--after wasting, like, TEN MINUTES--to stay with them. Ignorant asses. Taking up our time.
--
5:40ish-am
He is so fucking late.
40 minutes WASTED as he got LOST around the Chatham/Springfield stop.
Bah.
Made the second bus, yeah. Now, if it would just LEAVE. At least they're not packing anymore people in.
I slept and I didn't sleep on the way up. Had to, uh... never mind.
Ooh. The bus driver is named Hall.
And now he's telling us about the Great Chicago Fire, which happened off to our left on October 8, 1871...
Nervous again.
Hrm. One good thing about the previous driver, he did attempt to haul ass...

Trip Diary: Saturday
12ish
There are way too many announcements for the Lou Ferrigno signings. What, don't they think people know already? Sheesh.
Haven't slept yet.
--
Mrr. Much later.
5ish.
So. Got into Chicago at 6 instead of 5. Still caught my transfer bus.
On the way up to Cumberland AVE, there was a rainbow. I took it as an incredible sign of good karma.
The station was this empty place--I looked around and worried. Ice showed up a second later, so all was good.
We drove to a phone and called Indi and Em, agreeing to meet them in the lobby of the Hyatt Regency O'Hare to get breakfast.
Now. A quick moment of backstory. Visions, a large Brit Media con, was held at the Hyatt Regency O'Hare for 6 or so years. The last one was in 1998. I'd gone to Visions from 94-98. So. I had manymany memories of the Hyatt, including the glass elevators, drunken ramblings, and Lish, Amber and I carrolling, "You are my sunshine..." up and down the halls on Saturday night the last year.
I have been boring people all day gushing about the Hyatt. Sniffle. No more Viszys.
Anyway. Back to early Saturday.
We drove to the hotel Ice had stayed in, lazed a bit in the room, then drove to the Convention Center and parked. Then we walked to the Hyatt--taking the Habbittrail tunnels.
And we met Indi and EMS!!!
Now, I'd met Indi before, but it was so COOL to see her again. And Ems! Shinypants! Ems! MyChild! *g* I was so happy to meet Ems, she's nifty and cute and bubbly and just this incredible font of happiness. Much snuggling occurred.
Then we headed off to breakfast--not at the Hyatt, of course, which overprices and undercooks their nasty food. Um. Can't remember which hotel it was. The Doubletree? But. Had breakfast. And I introduced the Scoozie--a pine marten stuffed thingie which makes noise. Got it for Christmas, and love taking it to cons. For one thing, I can always talk to it. ;)
Here's where my memory goes a little vague. I was tired, so I think I may have chattered a lot. Indi says I was pretty silent, though. *g* Good.
After breakfast, we went over to the convention center, to the pillar. I unrolled the #subcafe sign I'd made and waved it about for a little bit. Then we went and stood in line.
The convention center in Rosemont is very large. Larger than I'd thought, really. Anyway, we got seperated from Ems and Indi for a bit, but that's ok. I was not very lucid still.
Finally they opened the doors, and we went in, and found Indi in line for her picture from, uh... Rude, iirc. I'm bad with names.
Indi said Ems would be along shortly, and--oh! Actually, we were standing at.. Saunders? table. The one where Ems was going to get her artwork. And, anyway... Ems was across the room, then she saw us, and FLASH! she was suddenly standing next to us. Well, not still, but standing.
The artist said she was Impulse, I think. She just moved that fast. Wham! Bang! Flash! Shinypants!
Oh! And before Ems showed up, Indi and I were looking at art on another table, and we saw the Xstacy (?) as Diavala pic. And Indi turns to me, "Tangles." Me: "OH! Yes, I knew that looked familiar." So she begged the artist to sell it to her. *cackle*
Anyway. Ems showed, Indi went and got in line for Steve Rude artwork. And Ice wandered off. Leaving me to attempt to keep up with Em, who is like a bunny rabbit on speed when she's excited.
*bounce* *bounce* SHINY! *bounce* OoohPRETTYSHINY! *bounce*
I attempted to leash her with the Scoozie's leash-thingie (something I'd concocted so I could sit it on my shoulder and not worry if it fell off)... Didn't really work. But Em got lots of free stuff.
*chuckle* She's a sweetie. Says hi and good morning and please and thank you. And MEANS it.
We wandered into the Dealers area, which reminded me of DragonCon's Dealers room... *shudder* So manymany things to buy.
And there were quarter bins!
Spent much time there, perusing and finding and buying. Then it was time to head back to the pillar and meet other people.
There was a Timey! And an Alison! And Ice returned. And Indi returned. And the Smiths showed. And an AJ!!
We unveiled the #subcafe sign again, and were told by at least three people not belonging to us that it was a good idea. We also fielded questions about it. And chattered and snuggled and hugged, and watched Ems bounce. *g*
Actually, the AJ wasn't sure it was us at first. And she wasn't a Panda! She was Spike's mum. But we pounced her anyway, and snuggled and then she had to go somewhere. Sigh.
The group split up again with me, Alison, Ems and Timey wandering off to find Cable action figures and quarter bins again. Poor Alison. Subjected to us all. *g* That's okay, I think she likes us. ;)
After a while, all action figures became Cable, even those that blatantly weren't. I picked up a Grifter, though. Chee.
Found the quarter bins again, and I left the three there. I wanted to find a shirt for Threnny, maybe one for Acey.
There was a dearth of good shirts. I searched lots, but couldn't find anything comic-related. Sigh. So I got... er... Will tell later. But! I got myself a Buffy mug. Chee.
I also sat by the wall for a while, waiting for Shinypants, Lady Luck and Alison to be done with the bins. When they were, we hit other places, then finally headed for the pillar to decide on lunch.
While we were discussing this, Timey showed around her Kung Fu Action Cable. And we thought up some... dirty things you can do with Cable, especially if his arm just goes up and down. It's all in the positioning, baby.
By this time, I was famished, my feet hurt, and I nnneeeeeeded a nap. Didn't get the nap.
But. We did decide just to head back to Indi's room and order out for pizza. Mmm.
Jim, Mike, Indi, Alison, Ems, Timey, IceWing.... We all trooped back to the Hyatt and up to Indi's room. Which, btw, is in the annex, so I had to relate the Bataan Death March story. Plus, I knew the shortcut. ;)
Ordered pizza, and hopped online to terrorise #subcafe. Pizza came, and we suddenly realised how fatal it is to give Ems more sugar. She was bouncing off the ceiling by the time she'd consumed half a bottle of Coke. Hee.
Much laughter. And we got a Kale phone call! Talked at her for a long time, then she had to go. And Finny called! Finny sounds so cute!
Wanna meet more peeeeople.
Timey and the Smiths headed back to do more shopping--and Times had to find her dad.
Finally, after much laughter and silliness, we all trooped back. I elected to take a nap at the #subcafe pillar, and the others ran around some more. Eventually Indi came back and gave me the sad news that Timey was leaving and not staying the night. *sad* I whined and pouted.
At some point, more people drifted back, and I remember being curled up on the floor with all of these backpacks around me. I think that's when Mike came back when his ice cream.
Yes. He came with ice cream and taunted us. And then there wasn't anymore ice cream to be found!
An AJ found us again. And then the con was over for the day. *sniffle*
The Smiths went off to their room and Ice and I followed Indi and Ems to hers. Where we found out she was leaving early 'cause her parents wouldn't let her stay another night. :(
No Ems. Much sad Lyssie pouting.
We all were to meet at the Holiday Inn after 9ish to meet Brucha. So Ice and I finally checked in, I took a shower. Mmm. Water. Then we got dr---
OOH! I'm forgetting something. Indi had a shiny shirt! Shiiiny. So we had shiny Ems, shiny Indi and Timey in a... see-through shirt.
Anyway. At some point we were back in Indi's room, and Drea called!!!
She wasn't going to come, but Ice guilted and I pouted, and we got a Drea!!!
So. In the lobby, we waited, and there was a Jim, a Mike, an Ice, an Indi, an Ems, a Drea!!, a B!, an Alison (who stuck around us very weird people, and we like her now, so we're keeping her...), a me....
And Ems picked up this weird guy, liked his jacket, so he came back and started trying to pick her up... Doing this while the WHOLE GROUP was giving him the "That's our Ems, you hurt a hair on her head, they WON'T be finding the pieces." look.
Then we tried to do quotes--but we'd been so funny all day, it was difficult to remember one line out of hundreds... ;)
And Em's dad showed up. :/
Much sad looks from people as she hugged us all and had to go. :(
Must have more Em next year.
Oh! I'd nearly forgotten. Earlier, after lunch, I'd brought out the TimTams and passed the Double-dipped around. They weren't all eaten, but thy were yummy. So, as we were in the lobby, I brought out the last of the Double-dipped, and a packet of original. Gave Drea a double-dipped.
For a moment, she looked like she'd attained nirvana. Indi said something like, "Another TimTam convert." and Drea *glomps* the other packet of TimTams--before I could even touch them--and makes them disappear.
Picture this, if you will. It's one of those designed 'conversation spaces'. A couch at one end, two chairs on one side, two chairs opposite, and two chairs at the other end of the rectangle. Drea is in the northeast chair on the end, I'm in the southern chair on the side. The table is in front of ME. The TimTams are closer to me by a good yard or more.
I was reaching for the second packet to open them. And she moves, and they're GONE. She was that fast.
She refused to admit she had them, too. *sniff*
Anyway. Em's dad came and took our Ems away from us. Badman. Oh. And while he was there, her pickup guy was talking about how he hated religion. Dude, that was so NOT what her dad needs to hear us saying. I think he was lucky there were no bruises left on him, since I wanted to kick him.
Then we decided we were hungry--but we also wanted booze... There ended up being no good place for booze (even though I'd brought a fricking liquor store...) so we headed to Dennys for food.
Scared our waitress, I think. They had us at one of those figure 8 type tables -- four on one side, four on the other. I ended up with Indi, Alison and Drea. And we were the cooler bunch. Had lots of silliness and laughter. We also had our half of the bill completely taken care of. The other half had to actually go up and itemise it at the cash register. Bah.
And then it was time to say goodbye. It was raining, too.
We hugged lots and promised to see each other next year. And say goodbye in the morning... And then B dropped Indi, Drea and Alison off at the Hyatt and us off at our hotel... And Ice and I went to bed at 12:30.
I feel so melancholy as I type this. It was one of the best weekends I've ever had--even if it was only one and a half days--and I so didn't want to say goodbye. :/
--
Sunday.
Not much happened. Ice and I got up and packed. Loaded the car. He went and said goodbye to Indi, actually, while I was still lazing in my bed. Then I forgot my shampoo and conditioner, so had to run back for it.
Then we drove home. Sigh.
I hate the last day of a con. It's fun, but there's all this sadness, 'cause it's over.
We talked the whole way down to St. Louis. I don't know if it was all coherent. But. We came up with some fun ideas.... Some regarding Phil Hartman.
*madcackle* We're such geniuses.
I had to work Sunday night, too. And....
That's it.
Sad, melancholy, sniffles.
And quotes. Will post quotes in the next entry. Plus, I have vague ideas for filking "Leaving on a Jet Plane" for us. ;)
Miss IndiEmsAlisonTimeyIceDreaAJ!BJimMike much already.
Wanna go baaaack. Must win lottery. Ooh. Buy ticket.
