Buffy...

Hrm.

I don't like Kennedy. She needs to die, her skanky-ass-ho self needs to burn in hell with flaying and stuff.

Shai and I marathoned 8 of the last ten episodes last night (I missed taping Lies My Parents Told Me and Dirty Girls because I'd forgotten The Vice was on the beginning of the tape), and, well, it wasn't bad.

I liked Wood. I liked Faith. I liked bits of it here and there (The Angel thing was kind of amusing.), including (oddly) the Spike/Buffy bits. Xander/Anya was amusing, as always. Andrew needed to be smacked around more often. Kennedy needs to die. Not sure how I feel about the fluctuating balance of power, but, dude. Poor Faith. Girl did not need to be in charge.

Wood and Faith? Cute couple. Loved most of their scenes together (especially Faith undoing her belt. Yes, dear, waste some energy on sex...). Even if the end was kind of silly.

It took most of the night, but I finally figured out what I didn't like. The writers wrote themselves into a corner, so, they suddenly had Angel pop in to Save the Day. It was fucking awful. I'm serious. The Slayers are fighting (and for what? Did Buffy REALLY THINK they would triumph over the ENTIRE ARMY? Yeah... Someone wasn't thinking, there), but it's Spike with his suddenly shiny amulet. What a fucking cop-out.

As if the writers went, "Oops. We can't figure out a way out of this." "Oh, hey! Let's have Angel come in and be all cool, and bring some magickal thingie." "Good plan, dude."

Honestly, there should have been more of a price. They didn't lose *that* many slayers, and the main cast (aside from Anya, and Spike's over on Angel now) are still alive. Yeah. That's such a high price. *snort*

Best line of the entire series:
Anya: What are you doing?
Andrew: Entertaining myself.
Anya: Why can't you just masturbate like the rest of us?

All in all, not a bad season, not a bad show, but... Popcorn, really.

And, Dawn? Suddenly grew on me. Like a creeping mold. *eyes* It sucks.

It isn't actually that they wrote themselves into a corner, IMHO. The problem was, the "let's have Angel show up" came up at the last minute, so they had to shoehorn him into the plot. I agree with you, though, Chosen came right out of left field, and concluded the series as if nothing that happened previously all season really mattered.

The writing on Season 7 was wildly uneven. The first nine episodes of the season were some of the best Buffy ever -- tightly written, building tension, finding all sorts of emotional truths. Then, when everyone on the writing staff realized the show was ending and they were about to be out of a job, they all went off and started polishing their resumes and the story stalled -- until Ep. 17, when they suddenly realized they had to scrabble it all back together and conclude the series. Even then, they had the Angel factor coming in from left field and the last episodes were leaking plot points like a sieve.

Caleb would have made a good "little bad" early in the season, but as the big ultimate evil, he was just not strong enough. In the final five we had a useless weapon drop out of nowhere (why is there suddenly a pyramid in Sunnydale that nobody noticed before?), that doesn't really solve any problems. We have Giles suddenly deciding not to be an *sshole anymore, with no motivation (not that he had any motivation for his *sshole period, either), we had Willow, who has been saying she can't do strong magic all season, suddenly does some strong magic, fairly effortlessly... which actually doesn't solve the problem, or even offer any potential for solving the problem (what good does it do to activate all the slayers in the world if they aren't *here?*) Then we have Spike magically solving the problem by immolating himself.

In short, very sloppy writing.

Kennedy/Willow was a ship with no passengers. The Willow/Tara shippers weren't likely to want Willow in another ship so soon, and nobody else was likely to care. Willow could have had a much better story arc without Kennedy getting in the way of exploring Willow's issues. Xander got no story arc at all, and Dawn barely got any development (she had one episode -- Potential).

I thought Lessons through Never Leave Me was some of the best Buffy ever. But with Bring on the Night, the season arc stalled and marched in circles until Dirty Girls, when we rushed to the end without exploring the issues of any characters except Spike and Buffy -- and even her story didn't get a particularly satisfying ending.

All that said, you've missed one of the best episodes of the season in Lies My Parents Told Me. Great bit of Spike history building.

NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!!!!!! She can't grow on you!!! You're the only one that hates her more than I do! I'm watching the Season 5 DVDs right now and Jason's already figured out I hate her!

I didn't find the last season as many people did.
Writing was uneven but then Buffy has always gone through a uneven phase in it's history.
I'm thinking some of the uneveness might have been due to SMG wanting to get through with the show, heard she was a pain to work with.
I did like the touch where it looked like Dawn was set up to be a slayer and wasn't.
Faith and Willow rock...wish they'd make a series with either character.
I read where Buffy regulars could be making guest appearences on Angel (which just filmed it's 100th show)..so i'm hoping for a Willow visit.
and we need more Drusilla :)

Hm. I don't seem to have had as much trouble with it as you did.

And, really, you want Kennedy killed violently, but you're willing to let Andrew off with some smacking around? If I had to hate someone it would be him. Anya definitely did the wrong thing.

The one annoying thing that sticks in my mind about the end of the season is that there was one possible candidate for the amulet who wasn't even given a thought - Faith. Particularly as she and Angel have had quite a connection over there in LA this season.

I'll probably have more coherent things to say when I get to watch it all again - which probably won't be until it comes out on dvd.
