Powers need to know...

Because I was feeling all lazy tonight, I wandered over and ran some of the plagiarist's articles through google... (this one http://www.livejournal.com/users/lilmissrrhood/12335.html, and it's been dealt with, I believe).

And wrote them a nice little note. Since I'm feeling all cat with creamish, I shall post it here. Because Ah am sleepy.

I suppose, in a way, this will probably be dumped into your
trashbin. No matter. I'm amusing myself writing it.

Tonight, I was bored. I hit some random Livejournals, and
discovered a report of plagiarism. Curious (having helped deal
with plagiarism before), I followed the links. Including the one
that had a list of Sam Smith's articles.

Just for the sake of amusement, I clicked on a few, then ran
opening phrases through google.

Imagine my astonishment when two out of the four actually pulled
up hits, a third was untraceable, and the fourth was an article
that was merely used as the source.

This is good, actually. Sources are your *friend* but you have
to attribute them. I pity Sam when she hits the real world of
journalism and tries to pass off a summarized source as all her
own work.

I think the problem is that Sam has potential. She just hasn't
taken it through very far. Instead of just copying, or
adjusting, you need to read several articles, and then write
from there. It's a very basic thing they'll teach you in class.
Or they taught me, at least.

The other suggestion I have is to make certain of your facts.

One glaring one was the following, from the article you wrote
about the No Child Left Behind law (one which I happen to abhor,
btw), "The hit TV show M*A*S*H*, for instance, seems to put on a
pedestal war, and healing during wars."

My suggestion would be to read up on MASH, or even watch an
episode or two. Because the main thrust of the show is *very*
antiwar. The books it was based on are also antiwar, though to a
lesser extent (they're more Richard Hooker running around
imbibing substances and pulling stunts).

As for the two articles?

found in its original form at
http://lists.indymedia.org/pipermail/www-features/2002-December/006479.html

and

http://www.manicinquisitor.com/issues/012/toc.html#1.3
can be found at
http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/technology/2238242.stm

I'd also suggest ditching the bright red background, and the
multiple text colors, the center tags, and the lack of a divider
between articles.

For the record? I'm proud to see that there are high school kids
out there posting this sort of thing, and standing by their
beliefs. It's very rare in this day and age.

Please keep doing it. And attributing properly.

And can I say how amusing it is that MASH is pro-war? *snickers madly*

PS. I fucking love this song.

Dangerous icons.

I followed the link to the LJ post about the plagiarism, and I was mesmerized by khakigrrl's icon. Animated icons of Hugh Jackman shaking his butt need warning labels, darn it!

That is *so* bogus...

Those poor deluded fools. They can tell themselves over and over again "The sky is red, the sky is red", but when they look outside, it's still going to be blue. Morons.

/me shakes his head sadly.
