Um... I'm supposed to have a title?
Right. First off, thank you to everyone who's said something about Bear. It's helped a lot. Sleep helped a lot, too.
Second, there's a trend. Or something. Either way...
Everyone is human. Me, you, the guy who lurks in the middle of the sidewalk and leers at you...
This trend I've noticed is that a lot of people read something and don't take a step back and read it without their mental prejudices.
Matt Nute is a name mentioned a lot. Know what? For months and months I thought I hated him with a passion. Then it hit me: I am just as fallibly bastardish as he is. If that's a word.
I make just as many judgement calls if not more. I am opinionated, loud-mouthed, bitchy, and violent if irritated.
The ops are a clique. Okay, tangent. Guess what? To an extent we are. Many of us share the same likes and dislikes in chatters. Newbie comes in and uses all caps, or studdly capz, or h4x0r speak? Guess what. We make fun of you in opsnotice.
Well, okay, I make fun of you. The others tend to groan.
Er. I've gotten off track.
Speaking of getting off-track, does anyone remember getting lost during Southerncon? I thought so.
Let me tell you a story... In St. Louis fandom, we make the online politics look like kindergartners...
Rob and Mike H. took over a local club. The people they removed it from weren't happy, and basically told them the club would die. That was nearly 10 years ago. Said club is slowly dwindling, but it ain't dead.
I know there was other interpersonal stuff that occured. For one, the people we replaced in the club weren't nice to Rob, so he spent the next ten years blacking their names any chance he could get.
I, too, used to think they were what he said. Yes. I'm a sheep.
However, I went to this little fanfic con. And I met a bunch of nifty people--none of whom tried to kill me. Neither did I try to kill any of them.
And it hit me. We're all human. Yeah, hey, some of us may not like others. For the most part, though, we can get along.
I came back from this con with these thoughts running through my exhausted brain... And realised the Old Guard weren't as icky as I'd thought.
In fact, they're rather nice.
Sad thing, though, Rob and I don't speak anymore. I've gotten tired of being used.
Did I have a point? Yes.
Don't just assume someone is being mean on purpose. Don't assume anything.
And, DON'T be a sheep.
BTW, I am SO not a Stepford. Do you know how insulting it is to be accused of following someone without thinking?
Cue me, five years ago, yeah. Now? Fuck, no.
I think, in the end, I'm just tired. My GOD, this is only online. And there's more to life than constantly backbiting.
Now, if no one minds, I'm going to go try and finish the report that's due in eleven hours.
*baaa*

since I'm the one who usually uses the word Stepford...
I don't consider you such, never have.
However, I also am not a sheep.
I have seen first hand that while not necessarily malicious, Matt Nute (and Frito) have a tendency to forget other people exist and have feelings.
And when called on it, they get offended that they were called on it.
A simple "why didn't you call to say you were/would be late/not coming?" inquiry was met with "I so don't want to take any shit for this!"
This, to my mind, is not an attitude condusive to merely 'we're all human,' because most humans learn from their mistakes.
That's all I have to say about the Wire mishap.
The rest of what happened between me and them RL while they were my housemates is what colored my opinions of them.
Having lived with them over a year, I know certain patterns of their behaviour, and this actually fits. Even when I am leaning as far to the opposite direction as possible in an attempt to be fair.
And contrary to what people like to say about me, I do make quite an effort to be fair.
