In defense of Stupid Prof Man...
Cache, what it does, and how it works is something of a Black Art.
Conceptually it's fairly simple, but when you get down to the silicon level, it gets Really Ugly, Really Fast.
I can point you to some great tech-articles on caching and how it works if you'd like.
