1. Animating female characters is hard, guys. Just ask the animators for Jem and the Holograms or Daria. I'm sure they have lots of tales of woe--after all, they managed to have more than one female character (unlike this idiot at Disney).

2. It is [livejournal.com profile] sparktober again. Yay.

And it wasn't even about all the hair, which is objectively more complicated to animate than, like, lizard skin. It was about the facial expressions. Because we all know women have more of those than men. (Or is it less? Since apparently it's difficult to animate two women and not have them look the same.)

Yeah, I could totally get behind hair being more difficult--because in women, hair is pretty different and idealistic. (dudes probably have similar variety, but you can get away with "short" and leave it at that)

But facial expressions. Because women are just more sensitive. Or something.

(I should add ReBoot to the list of "cartoons that managed multiple women without problems")

I think the part about this that baffles me the most is that if they had two generically attractive male characters, it's not like they wouldn't have the same problem. I mean, Aladdin and Prince Eric from The Little Mermaid look pretty similar to me, except for skin tone, and if they had them both in one scene they would also have this issue. I mean, the animators seem to be having an "attractive means similar character design" problem and mistaking it for a "ladies are hard" problem.

Yeah. I do think the guys tend to be sort of samey. But apparently, that's ok. sigh.

It must be so boring to animate male characters, since we all know that men don't feel anything. With those wooden facial expressions, it must get tiring drawing the same picture over and over again.

you can flip them like flash cards! (idek)

It must be easy, actually. They just re-use old cells with slightly new coloring.

The reasoning he gives is just the absolute fucking worst.

YES. I was just "...omgwut" at it. And then wanting to throw something at him.
