Unf. Big Finish. Also, Nightmare of Eden.
So, I haven't properly seen Nightmare of Eden for years and years (my vhs copy was damaged, so there were always lines across the video, but I would still watch it because I love it and probably shipped Della/Romana without realizing it. I was young then. DELLA IS HOT, OK.) But I watched it last night, and it is STILL AMAZING in its ridiculousness. (I love the IDEAS behind it, the concept of the two ships caught together, and Stott's stupid machine)
Also, Doctor Who says DON'T DO DRUGS, KIDDIES. Hah. Excellent.
However, however. Can we talk about Romana's hideous dress and schoolgirl tights? Because they were awful. Seriously. It's hard to make a flat-chested woman look even more flat, but they succeeded. (was this the sort of thing where she wasn't allowed to have breasts? Because Della did, even if they were covered up)
The mandrils, otoh, give me the urge to make costumes of them. Or at least the bottoms. They would be bell-bottomed pants of some sort, really. With scales.
(I had forgotten how much I love rubber monsters as opposed to CGI--I usually find the latter utterly rubbish in either case, but CGI mandrils would be hideous)
I've been listening to various Big Finish products (when is the Charley stuff arriving, BF, wheeeeeeeeeeeeeeen. sigh), and have discerned that Pam Ferris and Raquel Cassidy need to do all the audio plays. Because they are entertaining (and good). Also, I might have a thing for Raquel's voice (and possibly this explains that Jo/Neve femslash I once wrote--she was hot in Red Cap, too)
1. Destination: Nerva. Highly entertaining. And gross. Also, women spoke to each other. Always a bonus. (and I could easily do femslash with Leela/Raquel's character--I'm awful with names, sorry)
2. Death in Blackpool, Situation Vacant, Lucie Miller and Relative Dimensions. I wanted to like them more than I did. They were... entertaining, but mostly fluff. Sigh.
3. An Earthly Child. Best for McGann's comment in the after-thing interview where he jokes about the Doctor having sex. (it... wasn't awful, but it was pretty standard post-apocalyptic fare, and not what I was hoping for--I think the nostalgia may also have been the best thing about it)
4. That whole Key to Time Fivey thing was meh. I tried to listen, but I was distracted. Apparently, the Oncoming Beige isn't as interesting with the sort of "Oh, Doctor, teach me the world" kind of female companion? Peri would have made it a billion times more entertaining. (and I wanted to like Amy, but. sigh. Also, Zara was annoyingly predictable.)
5. The Demons of Red Lodge and Other Stories. I'll have you know that listening to this first thing in the morning is guaranteed to keep you AWAKE. *shudders* I did like it, though, and Nyssa is still aces (omg that thing she did in the first oneWAS AMAZING AND SHE COLD-BLODDEDLY MADE THEM KILL THEMSELVES. <3 <3 <3 <3 ahem. Apparently, I had thoughts)
6. Castle of Fear, The Eternal Summer, Plague of the Daleks. Pretty much only the first was that entertaining (ALSO, RUTANS. I have a thing for them), and Pam Ferris saved the second. Some of the bits in the third were grosssssss.
7. Speaking of gross, if you've ever wondered how to make the Rats of Nimh, Doctor Who-style, with extra grossness, might I interest you in Rat Trap? Because, holy hell, body horror up the whazoo and grossness and evil rats. Basically, this is what happens if Mrs. Frisby isn't around.
8. Heroes of Sontar was painfully awful. I don't normally skip entire audios, but I suggest you do. Ugh. I hate the new Sontarans so much. Seriously They make me want to punch the person who first came up with the re-tooling in newskool, because, ugh ugh ugh ugh ugh. HATE.
9. Kiss of Death. Silly, but entertaining. Also, predictable? But I didn't care, as it was better than HoS, and also, TEGAN AND NYSSA HAVE A BEACH HOUSE. on, like, the Riviera. WHERE IS THE FIC?
10. The Curse of Davros, The Fourth Wall and Wirrn Isle. Unf. Highly entertaining, and also, FLIP. She is amazingly fun. (WIRRRN. aahhh. <3)
11. Recorded Time and Other Stories. So-so. I think Question Marks was the best of the lot, though, again, spent some of it trying to pick out Raquel's voice (and Philip Bretherton was hanging about in a few)
12. Robophobic. Aaaaaaaand, Nicola Walker, ladies and gentlemen. Keeping this audio from devolving into too much dudeness. And also being pretty entertaining in her own right. I did really like this one, though I sort of felt it needed... idk, more intrigue?
13. The Death Collectors - REALLY REALLY GROSS. But also with some amazingly hilarious lines. (also, Spider's Shadow, but it was unbearbly blah); Kingdom of Silver/Keepsake were all right, though the latter was depressing (and also chock full of SF tropes)
14. The Magic Mousetrap. If I talk about how amazing I found this one, and how I'm fairly certain it'll be one I listen to again and again, I might be spouting some hyperbole. It isn't quite my beloved Zagreus, but it is entertaining. And I sort of love it deeply, as I didn't love Nightmare Fair (which was just awful).
15. Forty-Five, Enemy of the Daleks, Angel of Scutari, A Thousand Tiny Wings, Klein's Story/Survival of the Fittest, and Lurkers at Sunlight's Edge. All fairly all right, not huge and sweeping and entertaining, but not "I am never listening again, ugh" territory (hello, Heroes of Sontar). AoS is full of timey-whimey nonsense (ELEVEN GETS IT FROM SEVEN, I SWEAR) - I'd already listened to A Death in the Family, and the Project/Forge stuff was never a favorite of mine.
16. The Silver Turk. I blame Marc Platt for my disinterest in this one. I'd been hearing that Mary Shelley as the New Companion was amazing! brilliant! awesome! wonderful! the BEST EVER! and, um. I haven't actually managed to listen to this entire episode. I keep getting bored and wandering away. Here's hoping the next ones are better?
17. Solitaire. CHARLEY POLLARD, HOW ARE YOU SO AMAZING. I can't. I just can't with her.excuse me while I cue up Zagreus This is as entertaining as The Magic Mousetrap, and there's only two people in the entire thing. Confusing, eh?
18. The Boy That Time Forgot. I cannot stand Thomas Brewster, like, he is pretty much the only Who companion I would kill on sight, so I had avoided this one for a while (I thought he was in it). Then when I finally listened to it, um. If I hadn't heard Crimes of Thomas Brewster, first, I would have thought this was more original? idk. I thought it was a bit half-assed, and that the whole "Nyssa is going to have his babies now!" thing was exceedingly gross.
(I could rant for a while about how much I dislike Thomas Brewster, but now is not the time.)
Hrm. I think that covers my recent excursions into audio-land, bar the occasional re-listen to crack like Legend of the Cyberman.

WASN'T IT AWFUL? I think they were trying to create the childlike qualities of the "City of Death" costume, but instead she looks like she got trapped in a home for unwed mothers and had to steal the matron's shoes.
