SFF: Primeval: New World, season one, episodes 1-8

Spoilers for the episodes, obviously. livejournal, this update page is so ugly, what is this, I can't even

I can't, right now. Like, I know that I have thoughts about Serious Matters (like how the episode Babes in the Woods has some really dodgy male-gazey filming styles, and YET still manages to give Toby more characterization and make her canonically lesbian AND manages to have the majority of the episode FOUR WOMEN to TWO MEN. )

WITH KISSES AND ANGST AND EVERYTHING. And I just--CANON FEMSLASH. ON A PLATTER. AND NEITHER OF THEM DIED.

AND THEN EPISODE EIGHT, WITH ITS OBVIOUS ANGE/DYLAN H/C. where is all the fic, goddamn

It is not great television. It has dodginess--I mean, let's be real, three of the main characters have bffs/SOs who were fridged for their motivation (OMG I can't even with Mac's character beats next season. I want them now). And except for the one driving Zane Evan, not really sensationalized.

But this show. I didn't want to like it--not out of any sort of loyalty to the original show, but because it's Primeval, and I always dislike bits of it. I didn't. But it was entertaining and ridiculous, and people were snarky and Ange, with her Feelings. And Dylan with her "feelings are weird and strange" and Toby with her adorableness and Mac with his lack of danger-sense. And even Evan, with his, genius-boy-wonder-driven-ness.

And they did things like let the women BE COMPETENT. Holy shit, I am so not used to that. I'm used to, like, Abby getting knocked unconscious and/or kidnapped for an entire episode. Or Lady Emily GETTING LOCKED IN A CLOSET FOR HALF AN EPISODE. *still not over that bullshit*

This is not to say I think the show won't miss-step in later episodes, or adopt some of that stupidity. But by episode seven, I actually stopped worrying that one of the three female leads would die.

And the emotional gut-punches in episode eight. Unf. My angst on a platter. It was amazing.

But it is not all roses. They do kill off Mac's girlfriend, and Evan's wife. So the two dudes are full of Male Angst.

But, for serious, there is a scene where Dylan shows Ange how to use the taser and they both obviously are thinking about vibrators, shut up, I'm allowed to write all the femslash in my head while Evan is like "...I'm not comfortable with this. You wouldn't use that on me, right? Right?"

And knowledge of the original series isn't really needed. Not to mention that I actually think this show's team is actually competent and capable of taking care of shit way better than the ARC teams ever were.

So. Episodes one-four, I don't remember much of aside, from Gladys Witham running about in episode three. My joy over her being there was unsurprisingly tempered by the assumption that she would end up dead.

But. But, Sam (not Gladys, in Primeval), and Toby share a bathroom, and I can extrapolate a lot more from that than simply "they use the same washroom at work", because that's how I roll.

Anyway, then episode five with its... annoying thing.

Episode six was interesting in that the B-plot is Ange wandering around with the army dude, Talking About Shit. Like, seriously, I was not expecting them to focus on her in any way, shape or form.

Episode four, going backwards, had stoned dinosaurs. It was amazing. Also one of the episodes where I really felt that they did some nice character stuff with Dylan. Or at least, I liked it. Also, she threatened people over Toby.

Episode Seven lampshades its own... tackiness, and also gets better by pretty much being the Ange/Dylan/Natalie/Toby show, whilst Evan and Mac... run about and haul dinosaurs. It also had a nice, organic feel to Ange reacting to being in the field--it doesn't matter HOW prepared you are, for your first time? You might scream. It is also significant for Dylan's "Let me show you my taser" flirting and Toby and her ex holding hands. <3 *ships*

Episode Eight tried to be too many things at once, but still managed to mostly deliver. And the emotional punches towards the end, the sheer OMGWTF-ness of at least one plot point. i just. MAC. GO FIND JENNY LEWIS. someone write me that fic

So. All told. I really liked the season (Ithink that was all of it?), and I eagerly await more.
