Doctor Who - 7x2 and 7x3

So, I've been putting off talking about the last two episodes of Who (nothing to with the show, though, just general insanity in RL and falling into Bletchley Circle and reading something like six Rumpole books [exaggeration]).

Right. Dinosaurs on a Spaceship, and the western one.

7x02 - Dinosaurs on a Spaceship (Chibnall)
It is possible that I loved this more than Asylum of the Daleks. I'm not entirely sure that is even possible, but I think it might be true?

Like, I really loved AotD, and I really loved DoaS, except that DoaS hit more of my id? I think.

NEFERTITI, I CAN'T. She was so amazing and badass and wonderful, and just--I loved that she was disconcerting the Doctor to get access to the TARDIS and then stopped trying to seduce him the instant she was inside. IT IS LIKE SOPHIE DEVERAUX, CONNING HER WAY ACROSS OUTER SPACE (where is that crossover, dammit). Also, being queenly and bonding with Amy. And then getting laid (because, shit, girlfriend said she was in the mood). (ok, and being brave and determined, and saving her own damned ass)

Also, the Amy/Nefertiti fic, fandom. Where is it?

Amy Pond. I. Just. She is so adult now, so very much a fully-formed human, and she wouldn't have been this person without the last three seasons, and watching her change from then to now has been amazing, and I couldn't love her more. Also, she's SO SMART, AAUUGH. Figuring out the systems, and recognizing things, and snapping at her companions. Also, "I'm worth at least two men." Yes. Yes, you are.

Rory and his dad. Adorable. I love that Rory's been picking up medical shit all during his travels, it is AWESOME. (he has also changed, and I like him more mature)

Riddell. I found him less objectionable than I was expecting, and I sort of maybe ship him a tiiiny bit with Amy (because sex), and I didn't really think I'd find him attractive. idk. Maybe it was the stunning dinosaurs and finding the stun-guns and all.

Eleven, oh, Eleven. So so much anger in him. Especially with the Silurians as the targets.

Indira and the ISA. I LOVE THIS FACET SO MUCH. I just. IT IS THE FUTURE AND SOMEONE MADE THE FUTURE NON-WHITE. As it most likely will be. <3 (also, I sort of maybe want Indira/Nefertiti femslash after she gets bored of the past and Riddell's manly bits)

Basically, this episode was Lyssie id-crack wrapped up in glee and chocolate.

7x03 - A Town Called Mercy (Whithouse)

I... actually didn't like this one a whole lot. It was all right, but it felt a bit flat and heavy-handed. I tried to enjoy the whole 'western' ambience, but it wasn't as engaging as it could have been.

Not enough Browder, for one thing. And nowhere near enough Amy (though it was nice that she pointed stuff out to Eleven?)

Basically, I sort of felt like I'd seen everything in the episode in the trailers I'd watched (the ones introducing season 7, even). I mean, yes, there were the parallels to the Doctor with Jex, but. It just didn't feel as compelling as I'd hoped.

Also, only one other woman with a line, and she never spoke to Amy. I don't normally nickle and dime about this sort of thing (well, mostly), but it was really... obvious. :/

I think maybe this was an episode that would have benefited from a different/better plot, and/or more time?

That said, there's something about the way Browder's Isaac called Amy 'ma'am' that set my heart all a-flutter. (I feel like there should be porny Ponds and other people vignettes out of the first three episodes, so far)

Mostly, I think maybe I was just expecting more ridiculous glee, and this one was pretty Serious and Dark.

On another note, I've been seeing people (in various places) say they'd like Moff to go soon, and some suggestions for the new showrunner have included Toby Whithouse. And. No. Just. No. (I always got confused, because people don't like Chibnall, but they like Whithouse, and I'm completely the opposite in that I've pretty much loved every Chibnall episode and been meh/reserved about Whithouse ones--even though I liked parts of them, I never loved them the way I did Chibnall's. I think perhaps Chibnall hits my id great deal more.)

I AM THE WORST PERSON HOW DID I NOT REALIZE ISAAC WAS BROWDER???

*shame, eternal shame*

I blame the mustache. I did feel vague familiarity but not enough to make me IMDB it.

He has been off our screens too long. Also, facial hair. =D

Also, I knew he'd be in it, as casting had been announced ages ago/

I love Ms. Pond dearly, but the Western one? She sounded like a carbon-copy of Rose, like the lines about traveling alone were lifted quite word for word from Rose's speech in any number of episodes.
That's been my problem with NuWho.

We had Rose. Rose took time to grow on me. Rose leaves, we get Martha, who is a black medical version of Rose. Then came Donna. A sassy, backtalking version of Rose. Then came Amy, who is a combination of Donna and Rose. Notice how Mickey and Rory are basically made to play second fiddle to their stronger females? They both were inept, goofy types who finally developed in time.

I don't have an issue with strong female characters. I _have_ issues with the same character being given a glossy new coat of paint and repeating behaviours of their predecessors ad nauseum like NuWho has done. It's getting predictable and boring.

I noticed that in both episodes we have someone who committed atrocities and the Doctor arranges for them to die (the second time Isaac stops him). This and that people talking about doctor doesn't mean him.

7x02 - I loved Amy and Rory so much in this. I didn't care about hunter guy but everyone else was awesome including Mitchell and Webb as the robots. And the DW/Torchwood writers have some kind of obsession with pterosaurs. The scene with tea over Earth - I so want it as a poster.

7x03 - Not nearly enough Ben Bowder. Everything else was clunky and a bit off. I think it's because they cared more about the point than the story. I love Being Human but none of the Toby Whithouse's Doctor Who episodes really resonated with me. I don't think he's a good fit for the series.
