Fanfiction.net is deleting the internet! We should, er, Occupy! No, wait, BOYCOTT!

As some of you may have seen in the last few weeks, ff'net has started a massive crackdown on fic posted there that is not allowed by the terms of service. This has sent the community into a massive tizzy and backlash culminating in authors (well, some of us) being sent rather alarmist private messages.

Because nothing says "LET'S ORGANIZE" better than The Man taking away our porn.

Subject: Petition

Already, you know these people mean business. It's a PETITION, GET IN THE CAR.

I can't believe fanfic is doing this!

...well, technically, since we write it, we make the fanfic do what it's doing...?

Subject: Please pass it on to anyone you can!

I'm doing that right now. *beams*

IMPORTANT!: Fan-fiction is still deleting stories that contain yaoi, yuri,
lemons, violence, stories based on songs, and any detailed sex
scenes…so…just about every story on the site.

This is the most amazing sentence ever, you guys. DETAILED SEX SCENES are the ONLY thing fanfiction is for. Obviously.

Oh, wait, sorry. Apparently, yaoi and yuri, too. Because god knows there's no g-rated yaoi. (and god also knows that people would never, ever, use hyperbole scare tactics to rally people. Why, that might be considered lying. Also, apparently, ff'net doesn't consider femslash in the same light as yuri, as all of MY femslash? Yeah, it's still there--even that one where Jean and Domino are screwing, though it's not exactly detailed sex, so, I'm safe.).

Point three: stories based on songs and detailed sex scenes? HAVE BEEN NOT ALLOWED SINCE TWO THOUSAND FUCKING ONE. Or thereabouts. Your panties are in a bunch over something that was already not supposed to be there. WAKE UP AND READ THE BLOODY TOS, YOU DIPSHITS.

Most everyone knows of the
petition going around. If you haven't signed it, the link is www . change .
org /petitions/fanfiction-net-stop-the-destruction-of-fanfiction-net
Please remove spaces and sign petition so they don't remove mature content
including fics and accounts.

Internet petitions! Shit, ff'net will bow to our whims now, baby.

Also: mature content hasn't been allowed... FOR A VERY LONG TIME. So your petition is ten years too late. Suck it up, dumbass.

HOWEVER. However, this message is not over! Oh, no. It isn't. =D

But there is more we can do. someones organizing a Black Out Day.
On June 23rd(according to GTM timing, so that we know we're doing it
together), do NOT go onto fan-fiction. Don't read,
don't review, don't message your friends, don't update. If enough people
participate, then the site will notice, and will realize we take our stories
seriously.

BOYCOTT FOR GREAT JUSTICE. and porn. I'm not sure what GTM means, or how we're all gonna do it together without the AMAZINGNESS THAT IS OUR PORN UPLOADED. Or whatever. (also, fanfiction.net. It is NOT HARD TO TYPE, fan-fiction, it is not)

Please spread the word any way you can, in any fandom!

Done! *gestures at post*

And let me know if you're going to join.

I'd rather block you from being able to contact me, actually...

The motto is "Unleash Your Imagination." How can we if
we're being given a LONG list of what we cannot write?

YOU GUYS, I CAN'T. *cracks up*

June 23rd. Remember it. Please.!!!!!! i...

And so, the day came when fanfiction.net was boycotted. And the servers knew silence, ticking over gently as they seconds passed and the hours lengthened until finally--the traffic came back, they couldn't stay away. The traffic came back, the very next day.

So basically, don't go on FF tommorow. At all.

Well, you can stay away. Me? I've always wanted to rule the Just In section, and since I've not uploaded a damned thing since 2008, I might manage that for several hours. It could be amazing. Kinda like this private message of sheltered youth.

Kids, I remember the day they kicked mature content and songfics off site. This? Is nothing but them actually, FINALLY, cracking down on all you idiots who go "oh, well, that doesn't pertain to me! I am a special snowflake! You can't keep me doooown!"

If you're that het up about it, go get an ao3 account, ffs. They won't stifle your creativity.

*cracks knuckles and starts the difficult road of 'taking notes and making summaries' (oh, god, I hate this.)*

There is not enough headdesk in the world for this. As [livejournal.com profile] lilacsigil says, our working theory is that everyone taking part in this protest is no older than 11.

Bwah. I think they have to be at least 14? I don't know. Does ff'net have an age limit?

I don't remember some of this, can I be 22?

[personal profile] auroramama 2012-06-23 05:38 am (UTC)(link)
Wait, I don't remember ffnet's ban on songfic. (And yes, I was in online fandom in 2001.)

Mature content, yeah, I remember that. Why would anyone want to put their explicit fic there anyway? "You can't take away my right to hide my porn fic where no one wants to find it!"

Is this songfic as in, inspired by a song, or is this the kind where you include all the lyrics? Maybe line by line, following each line with a paragraph of purple Tell Don't Show goop?

Re: I don't remember some of this, can I be 22?

[identity profile] lilacsigil.livejournal.com 2012-06-23 09:29 am (UTC)(link)
They banned the kind of songfic where you include all the lyrics because there were legal threats, I believe. "Inspired by" and titling by song lyric is still fair game!

Re: I don't remember some of this, can I be 22?

[identity profile] lyssie.livejournal.com 2012-06-23 06:22 pm (UTC)(link)
That was hyperbole and me not remembering--it must have been 06 or 07 when it actually occurred (they banned chat fics, and script fics around that time, too).

Most songfic is Maybe line by line, following each line with a paragraph of purple Tell Don't Show goop? (what an excellent description for it. =D)

A little bit of songfic has more heft to the prose.

I don't think the inspired by/lyrics as the title kind are being gone after, though (I still have at least one fic up with some quoted lyrics at the top, I was very fond of that, in my early days)

I got a really annoying review containing basically this, on a 200-word K+ rated ficlet last night. And when I expressed my annoyance with said reviewer, they were so, so surprised that I was angry, and decided I must be taking out my anger at someone else on them, so not faaaaaaaaaaair! Whateves. The only reason I still echo my posts at FF.NET, well, the only two, is (a) for loyal fans who've never moved over, and (b) so I can see all of my stories listed in date order on one page, 'cause sometimes that's useful.

[identity profile] lyssie.livejournal.com 2012-06-23 06:27 pm (UTC)(link)
HAHAHAHAH. Oh, kids. Reviews are not for revolutionary use.

I enjoy the occasional ego-boost from getting notifications about being favorited or reviewed, though.

Sadly, I was never very good at keeping up with posting there--I hate writing summaries, for one thing. And then they made it harder and harder to do it in one, quick upload. And then they took away various dividers, and I was just done for a while.

[identity profile] scifiaddict86.livejournal.com 2012-06-23 03:24 pm (UTC)(link)
Awww you just no this is some overpriveldged white kid with nothing better to do now that school is out, don't you? You know one of those pathetic future hipster types who is grossly disapointed they have nothing to actually be oppressed about so they start blowing shit out of proportion to make themselves feel special. She(going by the odds here since ff.net is mostly female) has found a cause, she is the Che of porn, now dammit.

Hahah. Quite probably (they also remind me a bit of the people who got all up in arms during LJ's Strikethrough debacle. OMG THEY ARE TAKING THE POOOORN AWAY)

I wonder how many signatures their petition has?

NOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!!!!!!!!!! Please don't tell them to do that! *shudders*

I like your plan for swamping the Just In page. Sounds like fun. :P But I am all sadface that I did not get such a note in my inbox, for it would have been entertaining (though not as entertaining as your post). Made me feel like a REAL fan-fiction wrighter.

*giggles* From what I've heard of the volume of new account requests, they're already on the list.

If only swamping the Just In page didn't include actual work. Sigh.

I could forward mine? =D

[identity profile] curlyjo1.livejournal.com 2012-06-23 04:42 pm (UTC)(link)
Personally, I'm just more annoyed that they decided to reorganize by popularity rather than alphabetically. I don't care that there's 40,000 Harry Potter fics, and only 1,000 of the book series I want to read. I can't read them if I can't find them.
ext_18106: (Domino and Cable are adorable)

"stories containing [...] lemons - I'm sure that's something perverse sexually but I don't care enough to search - I just amuse myself imaging the ff.net editors having vendetta against actual lemons in fiction

Even I know ff.net doesn't allow mature content and I'm not even there. I think GTM are the content warning things, right?

I saw another friend having a story pulled and being banned from posting to the site for three days for a four-year-old story which had a summary using the word "bitch" as in "bitched out so-and-so".

FF dot net has run by incompetent asshats since it was created, however many years ago. Nothing's changed on that front, far as I can see. Every change they've made is pretty much guaranteed to make the experience worse.

Still, what's worth it with a petition? Just post your stories somewhere else, that's my attitude!
ext_18106: (Default)

[identity profile] lyssie.livejournal.com 2012-06-23 09:31 pm (UTC)(link)
Well, they're cracking down on it now.

But.

Entry title and summary must be rated K for all audience. No exceptions.

That? Has been there since (apparently, the date listed on the guidelines might just correspond to the last time I agreed with them) 2008. They've just never actually gone through and enforced it. Now they are (lord only knows why--maybe they had an internal audit? Those can cause all sorts of panic).
ancarett: Amy Farrah Fowler in the lab (BBT Amy does science)

[personal profile] ancarett 2012-06-23 09:38 pm (UTC)(link)
Honestly, I wouldn't have known that "bitch" was a forbidden word. Then again, I didn't send my young girls out of the room when BSG aired, although apparently I was supposed to do that as it was all much too filled with sex and bad words for kids.

The heavy-handed means of belated enforcement - pull and short-term ban the user, deleting stuff suddenly - that's sucky, rather like the entire site in my eyes. Honestly, I have to psyche myself up every time I write a story to x-post it there. I know some people seem to like it but, for the life of me, I've never seen why: it's as ugly as any 1990s-era website can be. The only way I can make a story there bearable is to use my Readability plug-in and I can only rarely be bothered to go to that extra click's worth of effort.

I know it's their site and whatever they want in their TOS is their business. But I think they've got a lousy site, give lousy service and really don't have any advantage other than venerability and a SEO-friendly URL so all of this is just one more reason not to click through on a link to there.
